Abstract

Dental caries is a disease affecting the hard tissues of teeth, impacting overall health. Brushing teeth is a crucial effort to reduce the growth of caries-causing bacteria. This study aims to analyze the relationship between tooth brushing frequency and caries status among students at SMP Negeri 1 Batipuh, Tanah Datar. A descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted in January 2023, involving 186 students as the population through saturated sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire on tooth brushing frequency and DMF-T examination for caries status. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods. Results indicate that 23% of students brushed their teeth once a day, 62% twice a day, and 15% three times a day. Regarding caries status, 64% had good criteria while 36% had poor criteria. Analysis revealed that students who brushed once daily had 2% with good status and 21% with poor status; those brushing twice daily had 48% good and 14% poor; and those brushing three times daily had 14% good and 1% poor. The conclusion of this study is that the most common brushing frequency is twice a day, and students with this frequency tend to have better caries status.

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common oral health problem experienced by the public, with plaque being the main cause. Brushing teeth is an effective method for removing plaque, where the brushing technique plays a crucial role in oral hygiene. Elementary Schools (SDN) 06 and 21 Taluak IV Suku regularly receive visits from the local health center every six months for dental check-ups. SDN 06 has never conducted a mass tooth brushing activity, while SDN 21 does it routinely every Wednesday, guided by trained student health officers. Preliminary studies showed that 60% of the children from both schools brush their teeth once a day using a horizontal technique. This study aims to compare the oral hygiene of 12-year-old children who use the combination of Fone’s-horizontal technique and the combination of roll-horizontal technique. The research design is a quasi-experimental study with pretest and posttest. The population consisted of 50 children, with 48 samples taken using the saturated sampling technique. Dental hygiene was measured using the Hygiene Index, and data were analyzed using the independent t-test (α < 0.05). The results showed an average improvement of 16% for the Fone’s-horizontal technique and 36% for the roll-horizontal technique, with a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05). In conclusion, the roll-horizontal combination technique is more effective, and children are advised to brush their teeth using this technique twice a day to prevent dental and oral diseases.

Abstract

Dental caries is a disease that damages hard tooth tissue due to bacterial activity in the oral cavity which breaks down carbohydrates into acids, resulting in demineralization of hard tooth tissue which causes cavities. There are many factors that cause the process of dental caries, one of which is poor dental and oral hygiene because dental and oral hygiene is directly related to the occurrence of dental caries. The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between dental and oral hygiene and dental caries in students at SMPN 2 Bukittinggi. The research method is quantitative with an analytical research design and a cross sectional approach. The research population of all SMPN 2 Bukittinggi students was 920 students and the research sample was 240 students from class VII and VIII using a sampling technique, namely simple random sampling. The research results obtained from the Chi-square test show a p-value of 0.048, so the p-value is smaller than the alpha value (0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between dental and oral hygiene and dental caries in students. It is recommended for students at SMPN 2 Bukittinggi to maintain oral hygiene by brushing their teeth twice a day, reducing consumption of sticky sweet foods and carrying out routine dental and oral examinations once every six months to avoid dental caries and other dental and oral diseases.

Abstract

Poor oral hygiene among school-aged children can compromise food intake and contribute to nutritional problems including stunting, wasting, and underweight. However, few studies have explored active learning methods that integrate oral health education with its nutritional implications. This study evaluated the effectiveness of storytelling and roleplay in improving oral hygiene knowledge and their potential relevance to nutritional health promotion. A true experimental study with a pretest-posttest design on two intervention groups was conducted in December 2024 at State Elementary School 23, Kubang Putiah, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. Thirty-six students in grades III and IV were randomly assigned to either the storytelling or roleplay groups. Both groups received one week of structured counseling. Instrument validity and reliability were confirmed through expert review and Cronbach’s alpha testing (α > 0,80). Paired and independent t-tests were used at the 95% confidence level. Results indicated significant post-intervention knowledge gains in both groups (p < 0,001), with the roleplay group achieving a greater mean improvement (27,8 ± 1,77) than the storytelling group (19,5 ± 2,60; p < 0,001). Roleplay demonstrated superior effectiveness in enhancing children’s oral health literacy, which is essential for supporting school-based malnutrition prevention initiatives such as the School Health Unit (SHU) program and curriculum integration. Longitudinal studies are recommended to examine behavioral changes and their measurable impact on nutritional status.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Karies gigi, Air kelapa hijau, Berkumur ABSTRACT Dental and oral health is an important part of general health that influences a person's quality of life, especially for elementary school age children. Children are vulnerable to experiencing dental and oral hygiene problems due to lack of knowledge and habits of maintaining oral health regularly. One natural effort that can be done to maintain clean teeth and mouth is to gargle with green coconut water. This community service was carried out at SDN 21 Pi Lubang, Ampek Angkek District, Agam Regency, with the aim of increasing knowledge and practice of maintaining oral hygiene among elementary school children through socializing green coconut water gargling and correct tooth brushing practices. Activities are carried out in the form of health education, demonstrations on how to brush teeth and gargle properly, as well as direct assistance to students. The results of the activity showed an increase in students' understanding of the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, as well as a change in behavior towards a better habit of gargling after brushing their teeth. It is hoped that this activity can be the first step in establishing clean and healthy living behavior, as well as encouraging the use of natural ingredients that are easily obtained in the surrounding environment as an alternative for dental and oral health care. Key words: Dental caries, Green coconut water, Gargling
