Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using Youtube to practice grammar. As Youtube vlogging has become the most current internet phenomena and one of the most sought career choices by today’s young generation, it is one of the most suitable platforms, both to learn and to practice the target language. In this study, 10 first-year university students from an intact-required class participated. The learners were given a task to make a video of them cooking, where they put the targeted grammatical items into use, and then upload it onto Youtube. Videos taken from the learners’ Youtube channels were collected, and qualitative method was utilized to see what strategies the learners employed to bridge the gap between the intended meaning and the lack of grammatical or word knowledge. The findings showed that the learners employed substitution, nonverbal language, and switching to L1 form pattern to overcome the language barrier they encountered during the communicative task. The result of this study shows that Youtube can be used as a meaningful and effective platform to practice grammatical structure, as the learners utilize their skills and strategies for an authentic language use.

Abstract

Generasi muda perlu memiliki kemampuan membaca dan pemahaman bahasa Inggris yang baik agar dapat bersaing di masa depan. Mengingat pentingnya dua aspek tersebut, “Teras Bahasa”  pun diadakan. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan kebiasaan membaca dan bahasa Inggris kepada masyarakat, terutama generasi muda. Kegiatan “Teras Bahasa” terdiri dari empat tahapan. Tahapan pertama adalah survei lapangan untuk menentukan lokasi kegiatan. Tahapan kedua adalah penentuan jenis acara yang diberikan kepada para peserta. Berdasarkan observasi yang dilakukan, tim menentukan lokasi kegiatan dan tiga jenis acara yaitu storytelling, playing board game dan showing flashcards. Tahapan ketiga adalah monitoring dan evaluasi. Dalam kegiatan ini, tim mendistribusikan kuesioner untuk penilaian kegiatan dari para peserta. Tahapan keempat adalah pembuatan laporan kegiatan. Hasil dari kuesioner menunjukkan mayoritas peserta merasa puas dengan kegiatan “Teras Bahasa” dan berharap kegiatan ini dapat dilakukan secara berkala. Selain itu, para peserta berharap jenis board game dan buku yang diberikan dapat lebih beragam sehingga bisa menarik perhatian dan menambah pengetahuan peserta.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the language output resulted from physical games played as a practice to learn grammar. 20 university students were involved in a game in which they had to jump and throw a marker towards cue cards that contained questions in If-Conditional Type II structure. The students’ language output during the game was recorded and analyzed qualitatively. The result shows that physical game facilitates the learners to acquire new grammartical items and that it is effective to a good extent.Keywords : physical games, grammar, accuracy
