Abstract

This research aimed to answer these research questions: (1) Do all social stratum of Desa Sindang Mulya, Kecamatan Cibarusah undergo a language change? (2) What kinds of things influence the language change? To obtain the findings, this research applied a qualitative method in which the findings were analysed descriptively. The findings show that everyone living in Desa Sindang Mulya, Kecamatan Cibarusah experienced the language shifting from using Sundanese Language as their local language to Bahasa Indonesia as the national language. In addition, the findings indicated that the language change seemed to be a threat for Sundanese language in Desa Sindang Mulya, Kecamatan Cibarusah.

Abstract

This research entiltled: The Influence of Interactive Strategy Toward Students? Speaking ability (A Study Toward Eleventh Grade at SMA Negeri 1 Cibarusah Bekasi). The objective of this research is to know the influence of  Interactive Strategy Toward Students? Speaking ability at the elventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Cibarusah Bekasi. The writer used quasi experimental design in this research. The data of students? speaking ability were gathered from pre-test and post-test result. In practice, then it was done by time series design. Population of the research is 220 students that are devided into 5 classes at the elevents grade of SMA Negeri 1 Cibarusah Bekasi. Further, the writer used cluster sampling and took one class consist of 40 students as an experiment class. The writer also can put forward that interactive strategy has significance influence in speaking ability. T is proved  that accounted t = 9.649 are pre-test and post-test I, pre-test and post-test II = 19.32, and pre-test and post-test III = 7.90, meanwhile t table = 2.021. it means that t value > t table, so that the alternative hypotesis is accepted

Abstract

Judul penelitian ini adalah ?Conjunction Or in the Elaboration Paratactic Relational in the English Clause Complex: A Functional Grammar Approach? (Kata Penghubung Atau pada Hubungan Elaborasi parataksis: Sebuah Kajian Tata Bahasa Fungsional). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan makna apa yang biasanya muncul setelah ada kata penghubung atau terutama pada hubungan elaborasi parataksis. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua tahapan utama yaitu pengumpulan data dan penganalisisannya. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini terbagi atas dua bagian yaitu metode pengumpulan data dan teknik studi. Analisis ini secara garis besar dilakukan berdasarkan teori-teori yang dikemukakan oleh Halliday, Martin, Saeed, Quirk, dan Gerot dan Wignel. Data-data yang diperoleh dari dua novel The Lord or the Ring oleh J.R.R. Tolkien dan Silas Marner the Weaver of The Raveloe oleh George Eliot dianalisis berdasarkan teori-teori tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada dua macam kata penghubung atau pada hubungan elaborasi parataksis, yaitu atau inklusif, dan atau eksklusif. Kata penghubung atau memiliki tiga fungsi utama, yaitu sebagai peringatan, paraprase,dan sebagai alat pembenaran diri sendiri. Fungsi dari kata penghubung atau dapat diinterpretasikan lebih dari satu makna. Makna ini bergantung pada sudut pandang pembicara atau pembacanya.

Abstract

This research is entitled Nomina Group Complexes in English: A Func-tional and Transformational grammar approach. This research discusses: 1) what groups usually appear on nomina group complexes based on functional grammar approach and 2) what phrase usually appear on nomina group com-plexes based on transformational grammar approach. This research method used is descriptive method which employs classification of groups, and nomi-na group complexes. This research, employs theory of M.A.K Halliday for functional grammar approach and Chomsky?s theory for transformational grammar approach. The result of this research shows that: 1) Group usually appear on nomina group complexes based on functional grammar approach is only prepositional group, 2) Groups usually apear on nomina group complexes based on transformational approach are adjetive phrase and prepositional phrase.

Abstract

This research aims to reconstructing the meaning of Japanese V1+Komu compound verbs through images schema theory. The data gathered from The Compound Verb Lexicon (NINJAL, 2015). Based on analysis through image schema, the verb –komu as a second verb (V2) add meaning ‘go in/into’ space or place. These meaning are: (a) go in/into three-dimensional space; (b) go in/into two-dimensional space; (c) go in/into one-dimensional space; (d) go in/into space or place because of gravity law; (e) covering; (f) permeating into something; (g) go in/into something by suctioning

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic may pose a factor that reduces learners’ motivation. The present study aims to investigate the differences between demotivation factors of public and private high school EFL learners during the Covid-19 pandemic. The present study applies a quantitative method to obtain its data by distributing a set of questionnaires adapted from Sakai and Kikuchi (2009) to 61 high school students from public and private high schools. The findings indicate that both groups of learners are mostly demotivated by inadequate school facilities, test scores, and teachers’ competence and teaching styles. It can be said that despite the differences in teaching location, learners may be demotivated by the same variables. Therefore, it seems imperative for teachers and teaching institutions to provide better school facilities, reduce learners’ anxiety during tests, and improve teachers’ competence and teaching styles to overcome students’ demotivation.  DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v6i2.6519

Abstract

It has been argued that demotivation can negatively affect learners’ interests in language learning. Thus, teaching strategies need to be performed in order to prevent or overcome demotivation. In this regard, using technology improves learners’ motivation and reduces demotivation. As a part of technology integration into language classrooms, digital storytelling can be one of the strategies taken to reduce learners’ demotivation. The present study is a conceptual study that aims to describe the potential benefits of integrating digital storytelling in EFL classrooms in trying times such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides discussing the merits of technology integration, especially digital storytelling in language classrooms, the present study will suggest strategies to integrate digital storytelling to increase motivation and decrease demotivation. The present study may merit educators and researchers interested in the discussions about using technology to minimize demotivation during challenging times such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Differences in eras can affect language patterns in naming posters at music festivals. This study aimed to discover the differences in language patterns in music festival posters from the 80s to the 2020s. At the morphological level, we used Yule's theory (2010) to analyze word formation. Then, at the syntactic level, we used Morley's theory (2000) to examine phrases. We also used a content analysis to examine data collected from newspapers and social media. The results of the study showed that at the morphological level, the most commonly used in naming music festival titles from the 80s to the 2020s is the type of word borrowing and clipping. The borrowing word formation type is used up to 18 times, while the clipping word formation type is used 6 times. In addition, at the syntactic level, the results found are included in the category of noun phrase types from the 80s to the 2020s.

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze how a group of EFL learners in Indonesia maintained their motivation and positive attitudes toward English learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The present study applied a qualitative study by conducting semi-structured interviews with ten respondents. The results suggest that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the respondents significantly. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, most respondents were demotivated but they were able to motivate themselves again by reminding themselves of the reasons they learned English in the first place. Those reasons are mostly dominated by extrinsic factors such as their need to get jobs, studying overseas and the benefits of mastering English for their future also motivated the respondents. However, some are still motivated to learn English because they are intrinsically motivated. The results suggest that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are needed to maintain learners' motivation and positive attitudes toward language learning. In addition, maintaining personal communication with students during tough times such as the Covid-19 pandemic seems important to be conducted by teachers. By keeping personal communication, teachers can help maintain students' motivation. Besides that, the findings of the present study indicate that the respondents used various methods to maintain their motivation such as using social media to learn English and constantly reminding themselves of their language learning goals. In regards to this, teachers should help students by integrating social media into the lessons and providing affirmations that remind students of the benefits of English language mastery.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis deiksis yang digunakan dan bagaimana makna deiksis dalam lirik lagu pada album Olivia Rodrigo berjudul Sour. Penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan pragmatik berdasarkan teori Alan Cruse. Data penelitian diperoleh dari lima singel lagu dalam album Sour Olivia Rodrigo. Metode pengolahan data berbasis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa lima singel lagu dalam album Olivia Rodrigo yang berjudul Sour menggunakan kelima jenis deiksis. Terdapat 477 data deiksis, yaitu deiksis persona 356 (64.5%) data, deiksis spasial 32 (9.4%) data, deiksis temporal 55 (8.%) data, deiksis sosial 16 (4.5%) data, dan 18 (13.6%) data adalah deiksis wacana. Deiksis persona menjadi deiksis yang dominan digunakan karena berperan penting sebagai subjek utama dalam lagu dan menjadi dasar orientasi untuk deiksis lainnya. Sementara makna deiksis pada seluruh singel lagu dalam album Sour menunjukkan bahwa setiap deiksis memiliki acuan yang hampir sama namun tetap berbeda-beda sesuai dengan konteks yang memuat lirik tersebut, yaitu merujuk pada perspektif dan hubungan penyanyi dengan audiens yang dituju, orang yang dibicarakan dalam lagu, serta waktu dan tempat tertentu yang mendasari terjadinya setiap wacana yang dibahas dalam lirik lagu.
