Abstract

AbstractThere has been a wide acknowledgment that textbooks are a common medium of classroom instruction. Simulatenously, a growing body of research have found that ELT textbooks have promoted certain ideology, namely neoliberalism. This study concerns the endorsement of neoliberalism and how it is embedded in both locally-developed and internatonally-published ELT textbooks used in Indonesia. Using content analysis, the finding reveals that all the chosen textbooks contain the neoliberal mentality. The mandatory local textbook focuses on how to promote competition, while the local private textbook highlights material wealth and competition. On the other hand, the imported global textbook endorses human capital agenda. In other words, each textbook endorses different neoliberal values. The findings in this study imply the need for critical reading before the textbooks are prescribed to be used especially when the potential readers of the textbooks have different cultural values and learning objectives than those of commonly reproduced neoliberal values in imported ELT textbooks as previous studies found.

Abstract

As digital technology continues to reshape educational methods, understanding students' perceptions regarding Twitter's effectiveness as a learning tool for enhancing English vocabulary and reading comprehension is essential for educators and researchers seeking to optimize language learning strategies. Despite a large amount of literature on social media platforms, there has been limited exploration of the specific features of Twitter that facilitate interactive learning, group interaction, vocabulary and reading development, especially when compared to other social media platforms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions and opinions of fifth-semester students regarding the use of Twitter as a new alternative media for improving students' English vocabulary and reading skills. This research used a qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews and presented by thematic analysis. There are 10 students from the 5th semester in the English Education Department UIN Jakarta were selected as the participants through purposive sampling. According to the interview, there are 8 students who agree and they mentioned that Twitter features like the direct message, English posts, and comment sections are useful for improving their English vocabulary and reading. The study's findings demonstrate how beneficial it is for students to use Twitter as a learning media to increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension in English.

Abstract

AbstractIt is undeniable that English is an important international language and there could be some background variables influencing English proficiency. Therefore, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta as the context of the study regulates that all students take an English proficiency test once they are accepted and must achieve 450 for non-English departments and 500 for English studies before they graduate. Having 12 faculties of Islamic and non-Islamic studies, it is interesting to measure whether faculty as a background variable matters. In addition, female as another background variable has been widely found to have better achievement in language, and therefore this study is also intended to investigate whether gender is a contributing factor to students’ English proficiency. The population was all students of UIN Jakarta year 2017, which data of 5089 students’ English proficiency scores, faculties, and gender were collected through the information technology center. The descriptive analysis reveals that the lowest score is 240 while that highest one is 570 and the mean score is 383. The ANOVA analysis reports significant differences among faculties: the Faculty of Medicine achieves the highest score (M = 429) while the Faculty of Ushuluddin attains the lowest (M = 365). In addition, female students, as yielded by t-test analysis, are found to have significantly higher English proficiency score. The findings implies the need to pay more attention to Islamic-related faculties having lower scores and to consider English proficiency score as an enrolment requirement especially for the faculty of Medicine. How to Cite : Azkiyah, S.,N. Abstract

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced all teachers to deliver online teaching and learning whether they are ready or not. Some studies have reported that many teachers face many challenges in delivering online classrooms. Hence, it is logical to assume that student teachers are likely to face even a more complex situation dealing with this issue. Unlike in-service teachers, for student teachers, they lack experience in both face-to-face and online learning. Therefore, this study attempts to report the readiness of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student teachers and the kinds of digital competencies they need to be ready to teach English with digital technology using a quantitative approach. There were 60 respondents who participated using convenience sampling, from an Islamic university in Bogor, Indonesia. Using the TESOL Technology Standards for Teachers and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory, a questionnaire consisting of 50 items was written in 'yes' and 'no' questions. The findings of the study show that most respondents possess adequate basic digital skills to teach digital technology. However, they need to learn various digital technology that more effectively supports language instructions. The respondents also indicate acceptance of the utilization of technology and are willing to integrate it into their future classrooms. This study implies the need to include technology in the curriculum of the English Education Department. How to Cite: Sari, E.N.A., Azkiyah. S.N., Sumintono, B. (2021). Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into foreign language teaching has revealed significant disparities in global innovation and accessibility, necessitating systematic analysis. This systematic literature review analyzed 88 studies (2019–2024) from Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest. Geographically, AI development is concentrated in Asia (particularly China and West Asia), shifting from the previous U.S. dominance. Text- and audio-based tools dominate pedagogical practice, focusing overwhelmingly on productive skills (speaking and writing) and English-language instruction, marginalizing linguistic diversity. Stakeholders reflect dual perceptions: teachers acknowledge administrative efficiency but cite digital literacy gaps and content accuracy concerns; students report reduced anxiety yet criticize AI’s inability to grasp socio-cultural nuances and highlight dependency risks. Pedagogically, AI aligns with social constructivism (adaptive scaffolding) and Self-Determination Theory (motivation gains), although limitations in human interaction depth persist. Three multidimensional challenges emerge: (1) inter-country research-policy disparities, (2) pedagogical risks (dehumanization and over-reliance), and (3) infrastructure access asymmetry. This study contributes to the global landscape mapping of AI trends, validates pedagogical synergies, and offers evidence-based frameworks for policymakers (equitable research), educators (blended learning), and developers (context-responsive multilingual tools). Strategic implications urge developing regions to strengthen inclusive frameworks through international collaboration to prevent epistemic inequalities.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the common patterns of code-switching and code-mixing employed by multilingual learners and their pedagogical implications. Using a systematic literature review method, 44 empirical studies published between 2019 and 2024 were selected from Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The findings reveal seven dominant forms of code-switching and code-mixing, including intra-sentential, inter-sentential, tag-switching, intra-word switching, situational, metaphorical, and code-mixing. These patterns are shaped by three primary factors: social context, learning environment, and cultural identity. Pedagogically, these linguistic strategies play a crucial role in enhancing comprehension, developing language skills, supporting cultural identity, fostering flexibility, and increasing engagement in multilingual classrooms. However, excessive use without guidance may lead to confusion and hinder language development. The study highlights the importance of understanding these practices for designing inclusive and effective language education strategies. It contributes to sociolinguistics and multilingual pedagogy by offering practical insights for teachers, curriculum developers, and education policymakers. Additionally, this review sheds light on emerging digital communication trends, such as the use of code-switching and code-mixing in online platforms and blended learning environments. It also provides actionable suggestions for integrating these strategies into teacher training and curriculum development. By addressing both linguistic and pedagogical aspects, the study underscores the relevance of language alternation in contemporary education.
