Abstract

In automotive learning, teachers generally use books and teaching aids as learning media. Automotive learning outcomes show the low value of learning outcomes. Thus a learning media is needed that can help improve learning outcomes. One way to overcome this problem is to use learning media that utilize augmented reality technology. In this study, a learning media using augmented reality technology based on android was developed to simulate the brake system on four-wheeled vehicles in 3 dimensions. The Augmented Reality work system used is marker based tracking, and uses 3D Max software and the Vuforia plug-in. In terms of pedagogy, this learning system uses the Modality Principle. Participants are class XI students of SMK YPM 4 Taman. This research uses experimental research. The students involved were 44 students divided into 2 groups, with each group consisting of 22 students. Both groups received a pre-test and a post-test. The experimental group was given treatment with Augmented Reality-based learning media, while the control group did not use conventional learning media. After making comparisons, the results show less than optimal due to the pandemic period. The results showed that the pre-test result between the control group and the experimental group was 49.32, and the post-test result for the control group was 62.73, while for the experimental group it was 73.18. So that from the difference in the difference in post-test scores between the experimental group and the control group shows that the treatment factor by providing Augmented Reality-based learning media in the experimental group has an influence. From observations and interviews, students were more active in learning activities and students were eager to take part in learning. This proves that students are interested in this media which can generate motivation to learn.

Abstract

AbstractThere has been a wide acknowledgment that textbooks are a common medium of classroom instruction. Simulatenously, a growing body of research have found that ELT textbooks have promoted certain ideology, namely neoliberalism. This study concerns the endorsement of neoliberalism and how it is embedded in both locally-developed and internatonally-published ELT textbooks used in Indonesia. Using content analysis, the finding reveals that all the chosen textbooks contain the neoliberal mentality. The mandatory local textbook focuses on how to promote competition, while the local private textbook highlights material wealth and competition. On the other hand, the imported global textbook endorses human capital agenda. In other words, each textbook endorses different neoliberal values. The findings in this study imply the need for critical reading before the textbooks are prescribed to be used especially when the potential readers of the textbooks have different cultural values and learning objectives than those of commonly reproduced neoliberal values in imported ELT textbooks as previous studies found.

Abstract

PurposeThe study aimed to reveal how the students applied the ideology of domestication and foreignization in producing Indonesian-English dissertation abstracts on Islamic studies.MethodUsing a qualitative approach with an explanatory case study design, it relied on Indonesian and English abstracts as the primary data sources, taken randomly from the repository of UIN Jakarta. As the main instrument, the researcher compared the English abstracts to Indonesian ones syntactically and lexically to identify the implemented strategies that reflect the translation ideology of domestication and foreignization.Result/FindingThe study revealed that in translating sentences from the SL to the TL, the dominant strategies involving some lexical and grammatical changes were a reader-oriented process; while in translating culture-specific items from the SL to the TL, the dominant strategies were a writer-oriented process with fewer changes or adaptation.ConclusionThe study concludes that the foreignization ideology dominates translating culture specific items, while the domestication ideology hegemonies translating sentences of the dissertation abstracts.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to explore social phenomena like social inequality by looking at how they were portrayed in a novel through allegorical elements.  MethodThis research employed a descriptive qualitative method to analyze social phenomena, specifically social inequality, as reflected in the novel 86 by Okky Mandasary. Through content analysis, the study examines words, phrases, and sentences to uncover implicit meanings conveyed through symbolism. Qualitative research is suitable as it explores meanings in verbal forms. Such a descriptive analysis helps identify and interpret societal issues represented in the literary text.  FindingsThe novel reflects societal issues like corruption, sexual deviation, and criminality through allegorical elements. These problems are portrayed as diseases affecting society’s structure. Internal factors like personal desire and opportunity along with external societal influences drive these behaviors. Through content analysis, this study explores how the novel reveals social pathologies as ongoing social phenomena.  ConclusionThis descriptive qualitative content analysis demonstrates that Novel 86 by Okky Madasari functions as a powerful allegory, exposing entrenched social pathologies—corruption, sexual deviation, and criminality—as ongoing societal maladies. The study underscores the value of literary examination in uncovering the complex interplay of individual motivations and broader societal influences that perpetuate these issues.

Abstract

This article revisits the role of grammar in second language acquisition through a critical approach to the Monitor Theory developed by Stephen D. Krashen. This theory positions grammar as an aid or monitor in the language learning process, not as the primary focus of acquisition. Using a literature review method, this article analyses Krashen's views and compares them with contemporary theories and empirical findings from experts such as Ellis, Swain, Schmidt, and Lightbown & Spada. The results of the study indicate that although explicit grammar instruction plays a role in improving written accuracy and understanding complex structures, effective language acquisition still depends on exposure to meaningful input (comprehensible input) and the use of language in real communication contexts. Therefore, this article emphasises the importance of a balanced approach between grammar learning and contextual language experience. It is hoped that this article will contribute to the development of a more adaptive language pedagogy that is in line with the needs of today's learners.

Abstract

Self-assessment is one of alternative ways to evaluate students’ speaking talent in English. Through this evaluation, students are allowed to discover, know, and develop their speaking skill. Nonetheless, this sort of project was probably not common in Indonesia. Thus, this study was aimed to know students’ perception of using self-assessment for assessing their oral performance at Link and Match vocational high school. The information of this study was gathered by means of questionnaire which consists of 5 questions about the use of self-assessment. In this qualitative study, the data had been analyzed descriptively. There have been 30 vocational high school students who stand in Multimedia Major as the participant of this study. The results of this study indicated that most of the students thought that self-assessment very helpful for them because it allowed them to know their functionality and develop it to achieve the course goal specifically the speaking course objective. However, some students though that self-assessment was considerably useful since the teacher not often use this assignment and the students not take pleasure in whereas attempting to assess themselves. Self-assessment is very useful in exploring and assessing students speaking skill.
