Abstract

The discourse on the legalization of polygamy in Aceh, which is contained in the Family Qanun, has become one of the issues that has generated pros and cons among the community. For the proponents and those who agree, legalizing polygamy is considered capable of minimizing the practice of nikah sirri and illegal polygamy. However, those who oppose it feel that this discourse is not an effective solution and instead creates new problems. This research focuses on the responses of Acehnese millennial women and their involvement in the discourse of legalizing polygamy in Aceh. Through a qualitative approach and literature study analyzed through gender politics theory and all conceptions, the research results were obtained: 1) 75% of informants strongly rejected the discourse on legalizing polygamy in Aceh because they considered that this plan would not be able to solve the problem of siri marriage or guarantee the rights of women and children as promised. Legalization of polygamy is considered to normalize polygamy and this further distorts the position of women in the family, 2) The involvement of women in bureaucracy and decision-making, especially millennials, is still very minimal, so in terms of their involvement in the discourse of legalizing polygamy in Aceh, it is still very lacking.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the shift that has occurred in antakng as a customary value standard in the Dayak Benuaq Tonyooi community. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, observations, and document studies, this research was conducted in West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan. The results showed that antakng, which has traditionally served as ceremonial object and used as a unit of value for Dayak people, and also functions as a standard of exchange, has now been replaced and converted into a unit of currency (rupiah). Currently, the value of 1 antakng is equivalent to IDR 400,000 (four hundred thousand rupiah). This transformation occurred due to the scarce availability of antakng (urns) and as a form of rational choice from the community to continue conducting economic transactions and maintaining customary practices in the midst of changing times. Antakng converted to money or rupiah is now used as the unit of value for paying wages and fines, and is applied in the settlement of cases in West Kutai. This research recommends the need for preservation efforts and the establishment of clear regulations regarding the use of antakng in the customary context, in order to preserve traditional values amid the challenges of modernization.

Abstract

The phenomenon of K-Pop fandom activism, which has been considered as a mere fanaticism movement, has experienced a developmental orientation towards the fulfillment of common interests. K-Pop fandom activism is able to become a movement in social media that has an impact and brings public attention in voicing social changes. This paper focuses on analyzing the trends, forms, and real implications of social movements initiated by K-Pop fandoms with a high number of masses and militants. Using qualitative research utilizing online sources, this study found that K-Pop fandom activism has enlivened issues that are not only related to their community but have referred to global issues such as social, cultural, environmental and political. This activism is able to become a catalyst on social media in the form of real action rather than slacktivism. Real action is carried out by giving donations, filling out petitions to make demonstration efforts. This activism phenomenon has implications for changes not only in the issues raised but also has implications for changes in the stigma of society towards K-Pop fandom which tends to be more positive as a driver of social change. However, this paper is limited to the use of text data as the main source which cannot provide empirical conclusions. Therefore, future research should integrate the views and experiences of those directly involved in K-Pop fandom activism so that it is possible to formulate more comprehensive conclusions.

Abstract

The arrival of Rohingya Muslim refugees in coastal Aceh led to a rejection response from the local community. Resistance is not necessarily present but the result of accumulated experiences and negative contacts built between local communities and previous refugees. In line with that, this article aims to map the resistance that is present in the frame of digital media. More specifically, this article wants to explain about: 1) the forms of resistance present in the framing of online news media, 2) the forms of resistance found in social media, and 3) the controversy between the community and pro Rohingya organizations. In order to obtain the desired data, this article uses internet studies and a descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that resistance in online news framing is divided into three forms, namely news that broadcasts community resistance in the form of demonstrations, expulsion of Rohingya boats, to anarchist actions and evictions at refugee camps. In the realm of social media, recorded resistance develops into a universal issue that is produced and reproduced. The resistance manifested in feed posts, video reels content, and discourse in comments gradually shifted into expressions of hatred towards Rohingya refugees. The rejection continues to pressure international and national institutions for the expulsion of Rohingya refugees. Thus, it is necessary to socialize digital literacy and strengthen the values of diversity in the community in order to build awareness in the wise use of social media.

Abstract

In contrast to the customary mahar or dowry system in typical Indonesian marriages, West Sumatra's Minangkabau people in Pariaman practice a unique ‘dowry for groom’ tradition, in which the bride pays a dowry to the bridegroom based on his social status. Payment is adjusted according to the social status of the man and is a must for the marriage to take place. This paper aims to examine the persistence and strengthening of the ‘dowry for groom’ tradition in the Pariaman Muslim community in West Sumatra by focusing on three main issues, namely the practice of ‘dowry for groom’ in the Pariaman community; factors that make the ‘dowry for groom’ tradition survive among Pariaman Muslims in the midst of the swift currents of modernization and globalization; and the mechanism of social reproduction of the 'dowry for men' tradition in the Pariaman community. The study is an empirical legal research using sociological theory as an analytical tool. Data is collected through interviews, observation and literature studies. The findings reveal that the reinforcement of the 'dowry for groom' tradition in Pariaman society is supported by several fundamental factors, including the widespread practice and support from the community, religious and traditional leaders, the local government, and the younger generation. The 'dowry for groom' tradition in Pariaman reflects the values of Muslim identity, such as adherence to religious teachings by finding husbands for daughters and maintaining a spirit of mutual aid, while also protecting the Minangkabau institution of ninik mamak (elders) and strengthening women's position as the true "monarchs" in Minangkabau society. Further research could explore more extensive meanings related to the 'dowry for groom' tradition

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the modalities of disimplementation of the Islamic family law in addressing the rights of ex-wives post-divorce. The study is crucial as the disimplementation of the law can lead to injustice, legal confusion, and dissatisfaction for the people that the law is intended to protect. This case study examines the disimplementation of ex-wives' rights post-divorce within the religious courts of Pinrang, Sidrap, Tangerang, and Pariaman in Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews and document analysis. The data analysis employed a three-stage interpretative method: restatement, description, and interpretation. The findings reveal that the disimplementation of the Islamic family law regarding the rights of ex-wives post-divorce arises from three factors: firstly, the ex-husband's failure to fulfill his obligations towards his ex-wife's rights. Secondly, the presence of a complex execution process for realizing the wife's rights necessitates substantial financial resources (bureaucracy). Third, deficiencies in law enforcement include the complexities of the legal process for victims (ex-wives), inadequate penalties, and limited legal literacy among ex-wives concerning their rights. The inability to uphold these rights has resulted in economic, social, and psychological damages for ex-wives. This disimplementation is theoretically attributed to inadequate law enforcement, alongside the influences of law enforcement agents, culture, and societal dysfunction.

Abstract

Da’wah strategies continue to evolve in collaboration with societal trends and receptivity. A dissonance between societal developments and the methods of religious propagation may result in the rejection of religious messages and strained interactions between majority and minority groups. Therefore, a more contextualized approach is required to enhance the effectiveness of da’wah. This study explored dramaturgical da’wah as a strategic framework employed by religious communicators to convey religious messages through frontstage and backstage performances. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, data were collected through interviews and observations of Muslim minority preachers on Nias Island. The findings demonstrated that da’wah practices were implemented by following dramaturgical principles, engaging audiences differently across stages. The success of this strategy was influenced by segmented communication methods, cultural adaptation to local traditions, and the portrayal of Islam as peaceful and open to interfaith dialogue. This approach contributed to fostering interreligious harmony and sustaining the presence of Muslim minorities in Nias. The study offers a novel perspective, highlighting that the development of da’wah strategies must consider the field of experience, particularly in regions where Muslims are a minority.

Abstract

This study examines how technological advancements have transformed the aesthetics of wayang performances in Java. Data collection methods include observations of wayang performances, interviews, literature reviews, and internet searches to capture the aesthetic transformation of wayang performances in the digital age. Given the existing literature’s tendency to discuss wayang performances within a limited scope, this research provides a more comprehensive contribution by positioning wayang performances as an integrated entity encompassing dalang creativity and audience response. Through the analysis of diverse wayang performances, the study demonstrates that aesthetic transformation is evidenced by the dalang’s hybrid presentation techniques, the emergence of novel story repertoires, and increased audience engagement. Significant findings from this study include the growth of dalang’s creative and adaptive capabilities, enhanced interpretative approaches in composing wayang stories, and the audience’s influence in shaping mass aesthetic trends. This study provides important contributions to the pedalangan (puppetry) and the relations of wayang, dalang, audience, and technology. Furthermore, this study contributes to the academic discourse on cultural adaptation in the digital age and provides pragmatic resources for the artistic development of Javanese puppetry.
