Abstract

This research aimed to discover the resistance and the subordination forms. The method used is descriptive qualitative research method and feminism approach applied specifically Simone de Beauvoir's notions of The Otherness in The Second Sex book. The data gathered through attentive reading and observation of the narration, mono – dialogue, and characters' actions in The Breadwinner novel by Deborah Ellis. Furthermore, the writers determined that women have a difficult access to work as a result of discrimination and exploitation, married women are required to be completely subservient to their husbands, unequal education opportunity, parents expected a son over a daughter, and women unable to participate in social-political activities. Also, on Beauvoir ideas of resist toward The Otherness such as women can work, become intellectuals, contribute to a socialist revolution, and women can transcend their limitations by refusing to internalize their otherness or to identify themselves through the dominant group's eyes. This can be concluded that women still faced severe discrimination, oppression, exploitation, and inequality to gain their freedom, yet women still resist to the oppression in society.

Abstract

This study at STBA JIA seeks to cultivate students’ creativity and critical thinking by implementing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) through English drama performances. It was chosen as it offers students opportunities to enhance their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Likewise, English drama encourages collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of cultural and literary contexts, helping students connect classical themes with modern social issues. This drama project specifically utilizes Oscar Wilde's plays, including An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Lady Windermere's Fan and conducted in CGV Cinema Bekasi. This study covered several stages which proposed by Kemendikbud (2013), namely planning, rehearsals, and final performance, all of that were monitored and evaluated by lecturers. The findings show that English Drama Project effectively encourages active student participation in the learning process, raises collaboration, and improves management skill, language skill and critical thinking skill, and even gaining confidence and responsibility. However, problems such as time limits, a lack of acting experience, and insufficient facilities were experienced. Suggested solutions are more acting training and better group collaboration. These findings help to further the development of interactive learning methods in literature study in higher education, like STBA JIA.

Abstract

Manga as a popular cultural product contains political and ideological content. This qualitative descriptive research will reveal the content of the symbolic content in one of the best-selling manga in the world today entitled Kimetsu No Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge. This study reads manga texts with a post-Marxism approach by applying the thought of an Italian Marxist named Antonio Gramsci. He theorized the concept of cultural hegemony, a non-violent social control carried out by the ruling class toward subordinated class  that occurs in contemporary capitalist society. Ideological, cultural, and political control have created common sense in society so that people do not realize that their daily lives are always under control. To sharpen the analysis, the study also uses the concept  of interpellation by Louis Althusser, another post-Marxist thinker who sees contemporary society believing they are subjects and having control over themselves while in fact living in an illusion created by the ruling class. This study concludes that the charismatic character, Kagaya Ubuyashiki as the supreme leader of Hashira is a symbol of the ruling class that has succeeded in exercising control through the process of cultural hegemonization to transmit the values he fights for. Meanwhile, Hashira, the nine strongest swordsmen of the demon slayer in the manga, is a symbol of a subordinated class who have internalized the political and cultural values of Kagaya Ubuyashiki.

Abstract

The research conducted at 4th semester aimed to investigate the influence of vocabulary mastery and reading strategy on students’ reading ability. Ex Post Facto study was implemented, and a simple random sampling technique was used which sample consisted of 3 classes. Data collection was achieved through questionnaires and tests, ensuring instrument validity and reliability. Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression were used in data analysis. The results showed that there is significant influence of vocabulary mastery on reading ability with 34,26% of the effective contribution, a significant influence of reading strategy on reading ability with 7,96 of the effective contribution, and a substantial influence on vocabulary mastery and reading strategy combined on the reading ability with 42.3% of the total effective contribution. These findings highlight the importance of vocabulary mastery and reading strategy in improving students' reading ability. When constructing teaching materials and ways to improve students' reading ability, lecturers and curriculum designers should keep these variables in mind. It is suggested for future researchers to explore more advanced methodologies and treatments to improve vocabulary and reading knowledge, perhaps leading to even greater improvements in students' reading ability. Additionally, further research can still provide insights for educators and students.

Abstract

The study examines how sexism is depicted through the experiences of the main character, Bella Baxter, as shaped by other characters. It adopts a qualitative descriptive method by examining dialogues, characters, and narrative aspects that reflect sexism through textual analysis. Cudd and Jones's (2003) levels of sexism theory and Glick and Fiske's (2018) ambivalent sexism theory are applied to examine the movie's portrayal of sexism. These theories complement each other, with Cudd and Jones (2003) focusing on the societal and institutional components of sexism, while Glick and Fiske (2018) emphasize how sexism appears in both benevolent and hostile ways within interpersonal interactions. The findings show that Bella confronts both hostile and benevolent sexism, such as paternalistic control, objectification, and intimidation. Furthermore, the movie depicts various levels of sexism, as Bella faces interpersonal, institutional, and unconscious sexism. These sexist interactions initially restrict her autonomy, reinforcing gender-based power imbalances. However, Bella escapes these limitations, restoring her agency. The movie critically investigates the widespread impact of sexism and how it influences women's social positioning and self-perception. Future researchers are expected to explore this topic on a wider scope
