Abstract

This article discusses the concept of Muhammadiyah's nationalism and the challenges it faces in the present context. The research utilizes a literature-based approach, drawing from relevant sources. The study highlights Muhammadiyah's perspective that Islam and nationalism can coexist. Muhammadiyah's nationalism is rooted in religious beliefs and is based on Islam and the socio-historical context of Indonesia. The history of Muhammadiyah as an Islamic movement founded by KH Ahmad Dahlan demonstrates their commitment to the development of the Muslim community in Indonesia. However, Muhammadiyah and moderate Islamic movements encounter challenges in dealing with views that consider nationalism contradictory to Islamic teachings. The primary challenge faced by Muhammadiyah's nationalism today is the rapid advancement of technology, which has not been accompanied by the strong internalization of Muhammadiyah's nationalist ideology among the younger generation. Additionally, the rise of transnational Islamic movements that oppose nationalism poses a significant challenge.

Abstract

This literature review aims to analyse the influence of government policies on the status of honorary teachers in Indonesia. The results show that although policies such as the appointment of honorary teachers as civil servants, certification programmes, and the provision of professional allowances have provided opportunities for improving the status and welfare of some honorary teachers, their implementation still faces significant challenges. Budget limitations, regulatory inconsistencies and disparities between regions are the main obstacles. As a result, many honorary teachers still face status uncertainty, low income and lack of social security. The study also identifies the impact of these conditions on honorary teachers' motivation, performance and professionalism, and the implications for education quality. Based on the analysis, more comprehensive and sustainable policy reforms are recommended, including simplifying the appointment process, increasing the budget, improving the recruitment system, and developing alternative career paths for honorary teachers. Strengthening coordination between central and local governments is also emphasised to ensure more effective and equitable policy implementation.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in second language acquisition, and effective vocabulary learning strategies can significantly enhance language proficiency. However, while various strategies have been studied extensively, the influence of gender on vocabulary learning preferences remains insufficiently explored. This study addresses that gap by examining the types of vocabulary learning strategies used by male and female students in the English Language Education Department and analysing how these strategies are implemented in their learning processes. The purpose of this study, which employed a mixed-method approach using quantitative and qualitative techniques, is to identify the dominant strategies used by each gender and determine whether significant differences exist between male and female learners in their approach to vocabulary development. Thirty students (15 males and 15 females) participated by completing a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire, followed by in-depth interviews with three male and three female students to gain richer insights into their practical strategy use. The results indicate that both male and female students predominantly use metacognitive strategies to build their vocabulary. Female students, however, consistently showed higher engagement across all five categories of strategies: metacognitive, determination, social, memory, and cognitive. Interview responses supported these findings and revealed that both genders commonly utilized strategies such as watching movies, reading, practicing speaking, and group discussions. Interestingly, only male students reported using vocabulary games as a learning tool. This study contributes to the field of second language learning by highlighting gender-based tendencies in strategy use, which can help educators design more inclusive and effective teaching approaches.
