Abstract

The increasing volume of waste due to human activities causes the need for waste processing efforts. One method that can be used to treat waste is the combustion method using incinerator technology. By using incinerator technology, the volume of waste can be reduced by up to 97% and reduce the weight of waste by up to 70%. In addition, the work of this incinerator can be reused like ash to make bricks and heat that can be used as a power plant. The work of gas that overcomes the problem of environmental pollution and can directly support the improvement of free air. Therefore, we conducted online training activities through google meetings on solid waste processing using incinerator technology in Pulo Ampel Village, Banten Province. With this training, it can add insight and knowledge, especially the people of Pulo Ampel Village about waste processing using incinerator technology.

Abstract

The role of English in Indonesia can be said quite special because English is the only compulsory foreign language included in secondary curriculums. However, the special status of English in national education is not accompanied by satisfactory results. Out-classroom experience (OCE) is believed to overcome this issue and has been applied successfully. Therefore, this study investigates the use of out-classroom experience in enhancing Indonesian EFL learners’ ability in speaking English. By conducting a case study approach, the research used triangulation data collection techniques consisting of classroom observation, interview, and speaking performance test. The study involved 40 undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Banten province as its subjects. The result showed that the use of OCE positively contributes to the development of students’ speaking development. Out-classroom activities can facilitate the learners to access or even create language exposures by themselves. This study provided some implications about using OCE for language teachers and educational practitioners. Keywords: Out-Classroom experiences, speaking, college students, EFL context

Abstract

Though reading in English is an imperative skill for students, teaching reading somehow still becomes a problem. This research aimed to investigate the influence of using the THIEVES (Title, Headings, Introduction, Every first sentence in a paragraph, Visuals and vocabulary, End-of-chapter questions, and Summary) strategy on reading comprehension among the eighth-grade students of a junior high school at Serang, Banten, Indonesia. This is a quasi-experimental study, specifically a non-equivalent control group design which aims to compare the outcomes between an experimental group (n= 33) that received the THIEVES Strategy intervention and  a control group (n= 34) that was not taught using the strategy. The results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group’s reading comprehension scores compared to the control group. The result also leads to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha) since the p-value shows Sig = .000 which means that the result is lower than .05. This experiment confirmed that THIEVES strategy has an influence on reading comprehension skills among students. The researchers then recommend English teachers to use an engaging and innovative strategy to captivate students’ interest and prevent boredom.

The source of errors was because of the involvement of students’ native language and accents, challenges in adopting English pronunciation, insufficient facility, lack of teachers, and students’ learning styles, and teacher’s inaccuracy in communicating the subject. The researcher concludes that students struggle with pronunciation, specifically fricatives and affricates.
