Abstract

This article applies Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to conduct a transitivity study of racial prejudice depiction in Kelly Yang's young adult fiction novel "Front Desk." The study dives into the linguistic representation of racial dynamics utilizing SFL's transitivity paradigm, focusing on the experiences of Mia, the main character of the novel dealing with racial prejudice in the United States. Beginning with a review of relevant literature on racial bias in literary works, the study offers a conceptual framework, stressing dominant groups' property claims. The analysis deconstructs Mia's experiences through material, verbal, relational, mental, and behavioral processes, exposing how linguistic choices generate systemic hurdles and social biases. The findings highlight Mia's frequent physical actions, emotional responses to racial discrimination, and extensive verbal communication, all of which demonstrate the pervasiveness of systemic hurdles in her life. The study contrasts Mia's experiences with characters from other literary works to interpret racial relations. The study examines the language of race in "Front Desk," emphasizing the novel's dual importance in showing immigrant problems and promoting critical observations on racial concerns. The conclusion states that the novel's linguistic portrayals play a critical role in influencing readers' understanding of racial dynamics, emphasizing language's ability not just to reflect but also to question existing conventions.

Abstract

Husein Ja'far Al-Hadar is a moderate Islamic preacher who has the characteristic of preaching like young people in general, namely being easy to get along with and discussing current trends. He is also known as a preacher who can maintain tolerance between religious communities and has a positive impact on all religious adherents who like Habib Ja'far's way of thinking and preaching. In this modern era, people are often careless and forget to increase their spiritualism with the various temptations that exist. So in this case, Habib Ja'far offers us with his book entitled The Art of Seducing God, a guide and reflection for all of us that in the process of getting closer to God we must have the art of seducing Him. There are three problem formulations that will be explained in this thesis, namely the background to writing the book The Art of Seducing God, the pattern of the relationship between humans and God in the book The Art of Seducing God, and Gadamer's thoughts in interpreting a text through this book The Art of Seducing God. So, by using Gadamer's hermeneutics, we can find the meaning of the art of seducing God in question. This research is qualitative research with the type of library research, using the Milles and Haberman analysis method in collecting data. This research uses Gadamer's hermeneutical approach. The result of this research is the book The Art of Seducing God which discusses efforts to seduce God so that we can have religion with love, religion with diversity, religion with God sincerely which was carried out by Habib Ja'far regarding all the problems that exist in this life related to humans and God. . So the key to the art of seducing God is love, sincerity, beauty and servitude. The researcher hopes that with this approach, future research can use other approaches to interpret this book.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the representation tendencies of Netflix in the documentary film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso." The study applies a qualitative descriptive research method using the Critical Discourse Analysis approach by Fairclough. The data source for this research is the narrative of the documentary film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso" produced by Netflix. The analysis of description results of agency reveal that the agents mentioned by the narrator are Cyanide 37%, Netflix 31%, authorities 13%, Jessica 13%, and All Indonesian people 6%. Thus, the agents mentioned by the narrator in the film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso." Regarding the analysis of narrator data using the theory of transitivity processes, it shows that the most dominant is Pr. Verbal at 24%, followed by Pr. Mental at 23%, and Pr. Material at 23%. The third position is Pr. Existential at 18%, and the lowest is Pr. Behavioural at 12%. Therefore, in the analysis of the narrator's narrative, it is found that both mental and material processes have equal percentages, each at 32%. This analysis identifies that the narrator comprehensively. The interpretation found that the narrator uses material and verbal processes to convey the efforts and hard work of the production team in conducting interviews with all the sources involved in this case. The narrator also predominantly uses mental processes because the narrator conveys and convinces the public about the facts of cyanide unknown to the public. The narrator convinces the public that the knowledge about cyanide with facts and evidence in Mirna's case cannot be considered the cause of Mirna's death. The explanation Netflix's efforts to bring in several narrators, even with the absence of some key narrators, become a question mark. Jessica, as a suspect in Mirna's death case, is hard to find. Netflix's belief is that Mirna's death is not because of cyanide. Netflix also has an interest in gaining significant profit from making this film, as evidenced by the trailer being watched by as many as 44 million viewers, and the documentary becoming one of the most popular documentaries produced by Netflix.
