The Mandailing Natal region boasts a wealth of cultural heritage in the form of various historical sites. However, the current condition of these historical structures is deeply concerning, necessitating urgent restoration and maintenance efforts. This article employs a qualitative research approach with a descriptive method. The research methodology utilized the historical method, consisting of four stages: heuristics, verification or criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The research findings reveal that the local community, including the Department of Culture and Tourism, has started to recognize the significance of historical sites in Natal District. Nevertheless, concrete measures to safeguard and preserve the heritage within the Mandailing Natal region, particularly in Natal District, have yet to materialize. Therefore, an active role from both the community and the government is imperative to protect and conserve these historical relics, ensuring that they can be cherished by future generations.

Abstract

This research examines the history and development of Syekh Zainal Abidin Mosque in Pudun Julu, Batunadua District, Padangsidimpuan, using a historical methodology approach. Built in 1880 AD, the mosque serves as an exemplar of Islamic architectural art, reflecting the evolution of Islam and the process of Islamization in Padangsidimpuan. The mosque is named after its founder, Syekh Zainal Abidin, also known as Harahap (1811-1901). Initially serving as a center for spiritual activities, political affairs during the colonial era, an educational institution, a place for traditional spiritual practices (parsulukan), and a medical center. However, presently, its function is primarily focused on being a place of worship, without involving religious and social rituals as in the past. This transformation reflects the mosque's adaptation to changing times while preserving its spiritual values. This study provides insights into the dynamic roles of the mosque within the local context.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of transmigration in Makmur Jaya Village, focusing on its historical development and impact on community life. It examines three aspects: (1) the initial settlement process, (2) socio-economic development, and (3) socio-religious changes among transmigrants. Using a qualitative historical-sociological approach, data were collected through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicate that transmigration began in 1981, leading to the establishment of Mukti Jaya and later expanding into Makmur Jaya Village. Economically, livelihoods diversified from agriculture to trade, civil service, and services. Socio-culturally, the community preserved Javanese traditions, such as ketoprak performances. Religiously, transmigrants contributed to Islamic development through mosque construction, religious education, and community celebrations. This study concludes that transmigration in Makmur Jaya Village successfully improved community welfare while maintaining cultural and religious values.
