Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain the experience of cross-cultural environment adaptation in international students and what makes international students able to overcome the crisis. The phenomenon of adaptation in a cross-cultural environment is an interesting phenomenon to study because cultural barriers are some of the things that most often cause international students to fail to complete their studies abroad. Many people who are in a new environment face culture shock, which is believed to be a normal condition. However, the level of disturbance experienced by the individual can differ from one person to another. This study uses two concepts, namely u-shaped curve and cross-cultural adaptation theories. The u-shaped curve concept has four stages of adaptation process namely honeymoon phase, crisis, recovery, and adjustment Moreover, the cross-cultural adaptation concept believes that individuals’ capacity for communicating in accordance with new cultural norms and values depends on their ability to change or adapt. It is made up of three crucial elements namely acculturation, deculturation, and assimilation. Each informant is able to be identified with a different process of cross cultural adaptation. There are three findings in this study. First, u-shaped curve theory may not prove for a number of adaptation processes in general. Second, international students undergo different processes of cross-cultural adaptation in cross-cultural environments. Third, what makes international students overcome the crisis include several strategies.

Abstract

This interpretive qualitative research has aim to understand the speech code and logic of tolerance in conservative community. Based on the Ethnography of Communication, data is collected through WhatsApp groupchat and interview which later analysed with The Speech Code Theory (Gerry Philipsen) that resulting codes of tolerance that then elaborated using Social Identity Theory (Tajfel&Turner) in generating codes. The result of this research is: first, Code of Honor and Dignity. This code creates logic of Victim Perspective, namely the feeling of the ingroup as victims of getting pitted against each other by the outgroup which is based on the concept of Aqidah and Morals that the ingroup believed in. Second, the dominant code referring to Code of Outgroup namely act of excluding outgroup due to differences of perspective from each religion. This code also arises in fellow Muslim that has different ways in interpreting Islam. The logic appears due to protecting fellow Muslim from influence of the non-Muslim where later represent the existence of stratification among Muslim. Third, Phrases for Moral Judgments and codes of Prejudice emerging logic of moral and prejudice. This logic refers to direct judgments for outgroup based on moral superiority feeling of ingroup with the purpose of revealing the true face of Islam based on Quran and Hadist, where later arises group identity as the true believer of Islam. Those identity arises due to the urge of improving the face of Islam that perceived as old fashioned, radical, or even terrorist. However, code of non-verbal also arises in the chatgroup as a complimentary during conversation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe consumer perceptions of global branding using product placement strategies in Korean dramas. Qualitative research is a research method that provides descriptive data in the form of written or spoken words from individuals and the behavior of observed phenomena. The research "Consumer Perception of Global Branding: Kopiko Product Placement in Korean Drama" uses a qualitative descriptive approach. This method involves capturing and explaining consumers' perceptions and experiences about their opinions of Kopiko in Korean dramas. The result was that the product placement successfully increased brand exposure and strengthened the consumer experience with the identification of three distinct consumer perceptions. Despite the success, the study highlights the need for brand consistency and effective messaging, as well as the importance of emphasizing brand distinctive features such as the use of real coffee beans to reinforce identity and meet consumer expectations. Furthermore, cultural sensitivity to brand associations with Korean culture influences consumer perceptions, while Martin Roll's global branding theory provides insight into how factors such as brand recognition, unique value, consumer experience, consistency, and cultural sensitivity affect consumer perceptions

Abstract

The decision to use online lending is on the rise. The number of borrower accounts and the value of outstanding loans continue to increase. But, at the same time, news of online lending cases has led to a negative perception of online loans. In addition, a person's decision to use or purchase a product is based on knowledge of the product. However, the level of financial literacy in society is still relatively low. This research aims to determine the influence of news exposure of online lending cases and the level of financial literacy on the decision to use online lending. Therefore, a quantitative approach with simple linear regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The theories used are Mass Media Effect Theory and Social Cognitive Theory. This study uses a sample of fifty respondents. The sample was selected using purposive sampling techniques with the respondent characteristics being male or female aged raging from 19-34 years, residing in Semarang City—exposed to news about online lending cases through mass media, and having used online lending. The simple linear regression test results that there is an influence of news exposure of online lending cases on the decision to use online lending. This result is indicated by a significance value of 0.002 (<0.05) with a regression coefficient of 0.179 (17.9%). The next result is that the decision to use online lending does not affected the level of financial literacy. This result is shown by a significance value of 0.57 (>0.05).

Abstract

The existence of women in society is still strongly entrenched as women are seen as weak individuals and are not trusted to do work outside of the domestic sphere. Among student organization structures, men are considered more appropriate to make decisions because leadership is often associated with masculine values, such as being competitive and aggressive in public life. Women should be considered as rational beings with the same abilities and rights as men, and can position themselves as leaders based on their ability to lead. This study aims to determine the issue of sexism and gender relations in women's leadership in Diponegoro University student organizations. The theories used are Feminist Viewpoint Theory, Gender Role Theory, and Leadership Theory. This research uses an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, as well as in-depth interview data collection techniques conducted on five individuals

Abstract

HPV is the cause of cervical cancer, which is a concern to Indonesian women. Despite various efforts, awareness of the HPV is still low. The government has started a program of free HPV vaccination for primary school to reduce future rates of cancer. However, cultural taboos on sexual discussion hinder the effective reproductive health awareness. This research determines the correlation between knowledge of sexual reproduction, openness in discussing sexual topics, and awareness of the HPV infection towards the willingness for HPV vaccination. This research used purposive sampling with 300 respondents. The sample criteria were women aged 17-24 years and who had not received the HPV vaccination. The hypotheses testing was conducted with Kendall’s W and Chi-Square using SPSS. The results showed that the correlation between knowledge of sexual reproduction and awareness of the HPV infection towards openness in discussing sexual topics with Sig. value of 0.006 < 0.01, stated as very significant from the Kendall’s W. Additionally, the correlation between openness in discussing sexual topics towards willingness for HPV infection vaccination with Sig. value of 0.000 < 0.01, stated as very significant from the ChiSquare. The findings of this study support the validity of the KAP model.

Abstract

Data from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) shows that throughout 2022, a total of 200,761 individuals were sent abroad to work as Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), also commonly known as Indonesian Workers (TKI). For TKI who already have families, they are required to engage in long-distance communication with the family members left behind, particularly with children and parents who experience these long-distance relationships. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to describe the maintenance of long-distance relationships conducted by children and parents who work as TKI abroad. The research uses Communication Privacy Management Theory, Maintenance Relationship Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. Data collection techniques in this research include in-depth interviews with informants using an interview guide as a data collection tool. The results show long-distance communication is conducted by children and parents through social media, especially WhatsApp, with frequent communication. The children and parents interact almost daily. Communication barriers that arise include semantic barriers or double interpretation of communication messages. Relationship maintenance efforts apply elements of positivity, openness, assurance, joint activities, mediated communication, and avoidance. Self-disclosure between children and parents involves applying a privacy boundary between private information and collective information. Communication management regarding privacy issues is handled through privacy secrecy commitments and threat methods between children and parents. Tensions in the parent-child relationship arise due to privacy turbulence, particularly due to intentional or unintentional privacy breaches and misunderstandings about privacy commitments. Children and parents manage conflicts in their longdistance relationships by evaluating and improving communication and strengthening commitments

The punk community, is a community that is included in the marginalized group in society because punk culture is a culture adopted from outside that has a different appearance from society in general and carries an ideology of resistance to the dominant culture, so that the punk community is often faced with a negative stigma from society associated with criminality and other negative things, and also the misconception of meaning by individuals in punk who commit negative actions and further muddy the name of punk in Indonesia. This research aims to find out the efforts made by the Bogor punk community in negotiating its identity to the dominant or majority society. This research uses the co culture theory proposed by Mark Orbe. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted using a phenomenological approach that focuses on the experiences of informants, researchers use data collection techniques with indepth interviews. The results of the study show that the Bogor punk community still fights against capitaslime and criticizes all forms of injustice in society, but they fight in a more positive way this is done because they want to change the negative stigma that exists in society. Abstract

Divorce and remarriage within a family often lead to interpersonal conflicts because the adjustment process for a teenager is not easy, especially when they have to communicate with stepparents. A teenager must adapt to life with a new family. This study aims to understand how family communication can resolve interpersonal conflicts and the strategies for resolving them between teenagers and stepparents. The theories used in this research are Family Relationship Schema Theory, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Interpersonal Conflict Management Theory. This study uses an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach and in-depth interview data collection techniques conducted with six individuals from three sets of teenage families and their stepparents. The results of this study indicate the importance of establishing dialogue between teenagers and stepparents to build trust within a blended family. Trust is formed through repeated shared experiences, such as daily family activities. Additionally, financial dependence of a teenager is also a reason to build trust. The variation in relationship schemas and family types in blended families is caused by different experiences determined by the communication patterns within each family. Relationship maintenance strategies, including openness, understanding, and involvement of third parties, are important to prevent conflicts in blended families. Withdrawal and exit response strategies are often used in conflict resolution, although they can create new conflicts due to unresolved feelings. This study emphasizes the importance of communication patterns in the dynamics and relationships of blended families
