Abstract

ABSTRAK Background: Composite resins are able to generate the color of dental restorative materials based on the original teeth's color. Nanofilled composite resins have compressive strength, good polishing, and color stability compared to other types of composite resins. Color changes may occur due to intrinsic and extrinsic factor example mouthwash. Mouthwash that is commonly used is chlorhexidine. The use of chlorhexidine mouthwash continuously may stain the composite resins. Mouthwash that has a good anti-plaque other than chlorhexidine is chlorine dioxide which has a clear color and does not cause changes in taste on the tongue.Aim: To determine the effect of 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash and 0.1% chlorine dioxide mouthwash to the discoloration of nanofilled composite resins. Methods: This study is an experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design. Samples are nanofilledcomposite resins made into discs in total of 27 and divided into three groups with different treatments, soaked with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash, 0.1% chlorine dioxide mouthwash, and sterile distilled water. Each group was soaked for 24 hours and tested for staining using chromameter.Result: ANOVA test showed the significant difference between group, that the greatest color change is the one soaked with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash compared to 0.1% chlorine dioxide mouthwashConclusions:  The use of 0.1% chlorine dioxide mouthwash does not cause discoloration as much as 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash. Keywords: Chlorhexidine digluconate, Chlorine dioxide, nanofilled composite resin, discoloration

Abstract

Background: Denture stomatitis is a type of Candida-associated infection that mainly affects the palatal mucosa. Candida albicans is one of the normal flora that is considered to be the primary etiologic agent in the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis. Denture decontamination is necessary to prevent denture stomatitis. One method of decontamination is by immersing removable dentures in an antifungal solution. Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is a medicinal plant showing antifungal activity. Objectives: To determine the effectivity of immersion of acrylic resin Plate in parsley extract on inhibition of growth of Candida albicans. Methods: The effectivity of immersion of heat-cured acrylic resin plates in parsley extract on inhibition of C. albicans growth was tested using an experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only control group design. Thirty samples were divided into 5 groups as 0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.05% parsley ethanol extract, 0.1% sodium hypochlorite, and sterile aquadest.  The number of colony forming units per mL was obtained after calculating the colonies on SDA media, allowing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) obtained according to the formula. Results: 0.01% parsley ethanol extract is MIC with a mean of 7.4 CFU / ml, which inhibited the growth of C. albicans by 31.05%. The Kruskal Wallis test (p<0.001) results indicate that there is an effectivity of immersion of acrylic resin plate in parsley extract on inhibition of growth of C. albicans. Conclusions: The immersion of acrylic resin plates in parsley ethanol extract with a concentration of 0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.04% has effectivity on the inhibition of growth of C. albicans.

Abstract

Introduction: Zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement is a new generation glass ionomer cement restoration material with the addition of zirconia nanoparticles that is equivalent in strength to amalgam while maintaining ability to release fluoride like conventional glass ionomer cements. Surface roughness can be affected by various factors including the use of mouthwash. Mouthwash that is commonly used during pandemic COVID-19 is 1% povidone iodine. Previous study stated that povidone iodine mouthwash contains alcohol and acidic pH which can decrease the hardness of composite resins. Objective: To determine the effect of 1% povidone iodine mouthwash on the surface roughness of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement. Methods: This was a true experimental laboratory research with a pre test and post test control group design. The research samples consisted of 36 samples of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement with diameter of 10 mm and height of 2 mm. The samples were divided into two groups: the control group which was immersed in artificial saliva and the treatment group which was immersed in 1% povidone iodine mouthwash for 24 hours. Surface roughness was measured using a surface roughness tester. Data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test and Independent Sample T-Test. Results: Paired Sample T-test results showed no significant difference in the surface roughness of the control group between before and after immersion with p value = 0,074 (p>0,05) and a significant difference in the surface roughness of the treatment group between before and after immersion with p value = 0,000 (p<0,05). Independent Sample T-Test results showed significant difference in the surface roughness between the control group and the treatment group with p value = 0,000 (p <0.05). Conclusion: 1% povidone iodine mouthwash has an effect on increasing the surface roughness of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement.
