Abstract

Speaking is one of the most difficult skills in language learning particularly in learning English as a foreign language. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the issues of speaking anxiety, the factors influencing their speaking anxiety, and the strategies they employed to alleviate the anxiety at one English teacher education program in Jambi, Indonesia. In order to collect the data, a semi-structured interview was employed and guided by an interview protocol to stimulate the participants in answering the questions during the interview. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we only had access to invite 12 students to participate in our study-they were nine male and three female student teachers. To select the participants, we employed purposive sampling with a convenience case strategy. Through thematic analysis (Braun and Clark, 2006), we identified three major themes of factors influencing the participants’ speaking anxiety, including 1) language barrier (Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency); 2) psychological issues (low motivation, and personality); and 3) learning proponents (lecturers, classmates, and unfamiliar topic). To alleviate their anxiety, the participants have undertaken strategies, such as 1) self-management (self-practice and doing positive activities) and 2) getting-help strategies (friends’ help and motivation).

Abstract

Teaching materials are crucial in education. They are tools for teachers to facilitate students to learn and improve the interaction of a teacher and students. Teaching materials should fulfill some criteria. One of them is the suitability of the materials to students' needs and interests. A questionnaire and an interview were used to gather the comprehensive data. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed using a statistical calculation, while the interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The teaching materials were provided by three lecturers from three different classes. The results showed that teaching materials used by D1 and D2 were considered good and beneficial for students, while the one used by D3 was perceived as inappropriate and did not help students improve their listening and speaking skills. Finally, this study recommends improving the teaching materials to meet students' needs and interests.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine students' perceptions of the use of debate in speaking as well as to determine students' difficulties in debate. The research participants consisted of five students who participated in English debate club at SMA Negeri 1 Jambi City. This research used a descriptive qualitative research design that aims to provide an understanding of students' perceptions and experiences related to the use of debate and the difficulties it faces. The results showed that students gave a positive perception and felt that the use of debate was effective in improving their speaking skills because debate encouraged them to continue practicing, so as to develop their vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. However, students also have difficulties when debating, such as: defending the arguments, control emotion while debating, problem in listening skills, find or hear unfamiliar vocabulary, compose the sentence correctly. Overall, this research reveals that the use of debate has good benefits for students' speaking skills, but still needs to be supported by adequate training and coaching to overcome the difficulties experienced by students.
