Abstract

This research focused on compound words in  the Kerinci language, Pondok Tinggi Dialect seen from its function in the sentence. To clarify the issues to be investigated, then the problem is formulated as “How are the compound words in the Kerinci language, Pondok Tinggi  dialect seen from its function in the sentence?” This research is descriptive qualitative. The sources of data in this research were the use of spoken language. This research is conducted because until now there is no written data source such as magazines, books and so on in the Kerinci language, Pondok Tinggi Dialect. The research involved several informants whose criteria refer to the opinion of Samarin (1998), Djajasudarma (1993), and Sudaryanto (1998).The data in this research were obtained by using the technique of observation, interviews and recordings. The function of the compound in Kerinci language, Pondok Tingi Dialect can grammatically be a subject, predicate, object, and adverbs. The pattern of formation of compound words are: Compound Words that  Function As subject, e.g.: N + N, V + N and N + V;  the function of  compound word as a predicate , such as N + N , / Ba - / + N + N ; Compound words function as Object , some of them are  N + V / N, N + V / N / Adv; and function of  compound word as adverb , some of them are  N + N , N + V , and N+R+N

Abstract

This report drew on a larger study which was to describe and understand the sources of senior high school students’ English language speaking anxiety at senior high schools in Jambi, Indonesia. The purpose of this paper was to report some of findings from the qualitative interview data on the sources of senior high school students’ English language speaking anxiety at one senior high school in Jambi, Indonesia. Data were collected through demographic profiles and semi-structured interview with senior high school students. The demographic data were analysed descriptively while the interview data were transcribed and analysed line by line to generate and develop codes and themes. An analysis of the interview data revealed that five major themes were related to students’ English language speaking anxiety, including (1) low speaking skill due to lack of vocabulary and grammar, (2) fear of negative responses from others, (3) low self-esteem to speak in English, (4) fear of being evaluated by teachers, and (5) cultural influences to speak English due to a more teacher-centred style. Suggestions and policy implications are also discussed.

Abstract

Student teachers need to have writing skills to support their academic activities and professional lives. Mastery of writing skills is interrelated to the use of academic writing strategies; metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social strategies. The purpose of this study was to describe students' academic writing strategies, specifically in writing their thesis. This was a quantitative study with a survey design. The sample in this study involved 88 students. The instrument in this study was a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The results indicated that the most dominant strategy used by students was metacognitive. Furthermore, the results also showed that there were different strategies used by male students and female students. Male students preferred to use social strategies to cognitive strategies while female students like cognitive strategies rather than social strategies.

Abstract

Problem Based Learning Model is a learning model that is intensively promoted at the University of Jambi at this time. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant effect on the learning outcomes of English study program students taught with the Problem Based Learning Model in the course of "Belajar dan Pembelajaran (Learning and Instruction). The research design used is Quasi-Experimental Research. This design involves two groups: one as the control group and one as the experimental group. The data obtained from this research is processed by calculating the gain or difference between the pretest and post-test scores. For time efficiency, data were analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solution) program for Windows version 24. Because of the Asymp value. Sig. (2-tailed) 0.381, which means greater than 0.025, it can be decided that H0 is accepted. So it can be concluded that the PBL learning model used in the experimental class is not effective enough to improve student learning outcomes in “Belajar dan Pembelajaran” courses.Model Problem Based Learning  merupakan model pembelajaran yang sedang gencar-gencarnya digalakkan di Universitas jambi saat ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh signifikan antara hasil belajar mahasiswa prodi bahasa Inggris yang diajarkan dengan Model Pembelajaran Problem Based Learning pada mata kuliah “Belajar dan Pembelajaran”. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah Quasi-Eksperiment Research atau Eksperimen semu. Desain ini melibatkan dua grup. Satu sebagai grup kontrol dan satu sebagai grup eksperimen. Pengolahan Data untuk data yang diperoleh dari pada penelitian ini adalah dengan cara menghitung gain atau selisih antara skor pretest dan postest. Untuk efisiensi waktu, pengolahan data dianalisa dengan menggunakan program SPSS (Statistical Product ang Service Solution) for windows versi 24. Karena nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) 0,381 bearti lebih besar dari 0,025, maka bisa diputuskan H0 diterima. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa model Pembelajaran PBL yang digunakan dikelas eksperimen tidak cukup efektif untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar mahasiswa pada mata kuliah Belajar dan Pembelajaran.

Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative study were to find out the voices of teachers about total physical response method in teaching speaking skill and describe activities that teachers usually give in teaching speaking skill using total physical response method. Data for this study were collected through a demographic background, interview, and observation. The demographic data were analyzed descriptively. The interviews data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The observation were analyzed descriptively using observation sheet and using video recorded for recorded the process of teaching speaking skill using total physical response method in the classroom. There were five English teachers as participants in interview and there were two English teachers as participants in observation. Based on the research results, there were five major themes emerged from the data related to the voices of teachers about TPR method in teaching speaking skill such as body gesture in teaching speaking skill, difficulties in learning vocabulary, effective method in teaching speaking skill, participation and interaction in teaching speaking skill, and role play in teaching speaking skill. As the suggestion, TPR method is recommended to be applied in teaching speaking and teachers who apply this method were suggested to develop appropriate classroom management.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to discover how the communicative competence is represented and to examine how intercultural communicative competence is promoted in EFL textbook “Bahasa Inggris” for Twelfth Grade. Dealing with textbook analysis, this research applied content analysis with a qualitative approach. The data were analyzed based on five steps; observation, marking checklist, classifying, coding, and interpretation. The finding of research revealed that the learning task in the textbook represented four component of communicative competence and predominated by Linguistic. Moreover, the four elements of Intercultural Competence were well covered but less then the other competence, with the dominance of knowledge aspects. Thus, based on this finding, hopefully the textbook will be developed more to assist students in building their Intercultural Communicative Competence.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini diadakan di SMP Negeri 12 Kota Jambi guru-guru disekolah tersebut. Permasalahan mendasar yang Tim Pengusul temukan adalah adalah guru-guru bahasa belum menggunakan penerapan teknologi dalam perancangan dan pembuatan materi presentasi pada pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa siswa. Oleh karena itu, Tim Pengusul akan melakukan Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat dengan judul “PELATIHAN PEMBUATAN BAHAN PRESENTASI OTOMATIS DENGAN MENGGUNAAN APLIKASI BERBASIS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BAGI GURU SMPN 12 KOTA JAMBI”. Tim Pengusul yang melaksanakan Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini terdiri: Dr. Dra. Yelia, M.Pd. (Ketua Tim), Dony Efriza, S.Pd., M.Pd (Anggota I), Dr. Rosinta Norawati, MA (Anggota II) dan Nely Arif, S.Pd., M.Pd (Anggota III). Tim Pengusul adalah dosen pada Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Jambi. SMPN 12 Kota Jambi bertindak sebagai Mitra yang akan membantu: 1) memberi informasi dan memotivasi guru-guru untuk mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan yang akan diadakan, dan 2) memfasilitasi kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang diselenggarakan. Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini akan dilaksanakan dalam tiga tahapan. Tahap pertama adalah Tahap Persiapan yang meliputi penentuan tempat pengabdian dan penyusunan modul. Tahap kedua adalah Tahap Pelaksanaan yang akan dilaksanakan sebanyak satu kali. Sedangkan tahap ketiga adalah Tahap Pelaporan Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat yang telah dilaksanakan. Luaran yang dihasilkan dari Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang berupa pelatihan ini adalah mampunya guru dalam membuat bahan presentsi otomatis dengan menggunakan aplikasi berbasis Artificial Intelligence yang daam PKm mengunakan aplikasi bernama “Tome”. Pemahaman tersebut kemudian dilanjutkan dengan penerapannya dalam pembelajaran. Setiap peserta Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini akan diberi modul yang terkait dengan materi pelatihan. Selain daripada itu, program ini juga akan dipublikasikan di jurnal nasional dan dimedia masa.

Abstract

This study aimed to look into the psychological challenges EFL students faced while learning English and the strategies they used. This research was conducted using a quantitative descriptive research design with a questionnaire as the instrument. The respondents of this research were 75 students from one of the public junior high schools in Kota Jambi. The data obtained were analyzed using statistics and descriptive methods. Students face three psychological challenges: self-belief, motivation, and Anxiety. For the learning strategy, there were eight indicators of the learning strategy that students used in learning English; 6 of them were the learning strategy that they used, such as cognitive strategies (underlining and memorizing) and behavioral strategies (test-taking, help-seeking, homework management, and note-taking skills).

Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative research are to explore how EFL learners perceive the use of Digital Comics in learning Vocabulary and explain how Digital Comics are used for learning Vocabulary. In doing the research, the researcher used a case study approach for the design to provide a rich source of data on individuals’ experiences. Four participants participated in this research and they met the inclusive criteria for the research, including the Active students of Universitas Jambi in English education Study program who used Digital Comic beyond the Classroom, students who used Digital Comic in English version (not in Bahasa), and willing to voluntarily participate in the research. In collecting the data, the researcher employed semi-structured interviews. The researcher used the Qualitative Data analysis by Miles and Huberman (1984) to analyze the data from participants. Miles and Huberman (1984) identified three subsequent steps in data analysis: Data reduction, Data display, and Conclusion. The results indicated that four themes in how EFL learners perceive the use of Digital Comics in learning Vocabulary were identified, including, 1) Comic as Entertaining Media; 2) Flexibility of Digital Comic; 3) Affordable cost of Comic use, and 4) Positive Attitude towards Digital Comic Engagement. This Research also revealed that there were five identified strategies used by EFL students in learning vocabulary through Digital Comic, including, 1) Learning through Visuals; 2) Guessing the Word; 3) Integration with Language Apps; 4) Students acquire informal vocabulary; 5)Note taking; 6) Word practicing in daily activities.
