Abstract

This research investigates the structure of simple sentence which was used by journalist to convey the news to the reader. Moreover, this paper was performed to investigate the transitivity of simple sentence of the news tittle and also to know the constituent structure in simple sentence in declaring the news to the consumers of news, namely readers. The method of collecting data were performed in observational method with the following technique was non-participant observational technique. The data were taken only from headline news during one month. In analyzing the data, the writer used referential identity method which using equalizer technique as the following technique. The result of this paper showed the simple sentences which were used by journalist were nuclear constituent where the transitivity of sentences were constructed in active sentence and the  part of transitive verbs for fulfilling predicate was also available.

Abstract

Language in appeals and announcements regarding Covid19 in public spaces is an important factor in communication regarding the handling of this pandemic. In this regard, this article describes the language and reactions of the public to the appeals and announcements regarding Covid19. The data source in this study is the language of appeals and announcements regarding Covid19 in public spaces in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The data in this study are linguistic variations and people's responses to linguistic variations in the Covid19 appeal and announcement. Data collection was carried out through observation and questionnaires. The analysis was carried out in the framework of sociolinguistic study. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the languages used are Indonesian with formal and informal varieties, English, and Minangkabau language, also found the use of abbreviations, acronyms, and mixing-code. People have different reactions regarding the use of the language, some agree and disagree, on the other hand there are those who are affected and not. This difference is influenced by age and education. The novelty in this research is the finding that appeals and announcements relating to handling Covid19 will be more optimal if they are equipped with the number of victims of this virus.

Abstract

Abstract                 This research has purpose to find out how English teachers respond towards students misbehavior. The writers used two instruments in gotten the data which were observation checklist, video and field note.  The sample was two English teachers who taught at VIII grade of Junior high school in Padang. Writers wanted to know how English teachers respond to passive and active misbehavior that has been done by the students in the teaching learning process. The data were the participants which are teacher 1 and teacher 2 used serious and minor respond toward students’ misbehavior. In the students’ passive misbehavior they used difference respond. Teacher 1 used serious respond and teacher 2 used minor response. Then, in the active students’ misbehavior both of the teachers used serious responds.

Abstract

This research investigated students’ belief on learning English as a foreign language at Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Based on the learner-centered approaches to foreign language teaching, it is important for teacher to understand about students’ prior knowledge and experiences, expectations, and attitudes towards language learning. Belief as part of attitude can influence students’ way of thinking, feeling, or making sense of the learning process. Thus, the teachers need to know about students’ belief. The purpose was to find what beliefs about language learning do Social Science Department students hold? The methodology of research is descriptive quantitative research. It describes the phenomena about students’ belief in the field. This study examines all students in Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat which totally 10 students. The data were taken form a questionnaire. The findings of the research showed that English subject in campus is not enough for students to develop their English ability. However, they belief that they have a special ability in learning English. The results also showed that some students have belief which in learning English students have to know the culture of the native speaker, have good grammar, pronunciation and practice regularly.

Abstract

This research was conducted to know the kind of commissive and act the analysis of the three acts which are locution, illocution and perlocution could be found in the interview of Tim Cook in Oxford University. This research was a qualitative research. The source of data that used in this research was a video of an interview while the data which would be analyzed were utterances of the speakers in the interview. The research result was showed that there were two forms of commissive act that can be found in the interview which are promise and volunteering acts. From the result, it can be concluded that the use of promise act form was mostly act used during the interview of Tim Cook in Oxford University. This form was used by the interviewer when giving instruction during the interview or when asking question to Tim. Meanwhile the volunteering form was used when Tim volunteering himself to give an example to the audience of the interview.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe dari kata slang yang terdiri dari tipe-tipe pembentukan kata slang dalam film Pitch Perfect. Slang adalah sebuah kata yang tidak sesuai dengan Standar Bahasa Inggris yang sering digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari. Peneliti memilih untuk menemukan kata-kata slang  ini dalam sebuah karya sastra berbentuk film. Film yang dipih adalah Pitch Perfect  karena di dalam film ini banyak ditemukan ungkapan yang termasuk ungkapan slang tersebut. Di dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan content analysis design. Content analysis design ini bertujuan untuk melihat makna dan tipe yang terkandung di dalam sebuah slang. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan metode simak dengan teknik Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC). Metode dan teknik ini merupakan cara untuk mengumpulkan data dengan cara melakukan simak terhadap film tersebut, dan peneliti sebagai partisipan tidak langsung. Selanjutnya, dalam menganalisa data, peneliti menggunakan metode padan dengan teknik daya pilah bersifat mental. Peneliti secara langsung melakukan analisa data berdasarkan pengetahuan atau mental peneliti serta berdasarkan konteks yang ada di dalam film tersebut. Hasil dari penelitian ini berupa tipe-tipe dari pembentuka kata slang. Peneliti menemukan beberapa bentuk dari pembentukan kata slang di dalam film Pitch Perfect. Tipe-tipe  itu seperti compounding,back-formation, suffixation, and conversion.

Abstract

This research investigates Indonesian EFL students writing four types of English sentences in their paragraph writing assignments that were posted online in Writing 1 course of English Education at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. The analysed types of sentences are Simple Sentence (code: S.S.), Compound Sentence (code: C.S.1), Complex Sentence (code: C.S.2), and Compound-Complex Sentence (code: C.C.S). The percentage of each type of sentences that appears in the students’ writings within each five genres represents the students’ syntactical composition. Moreover, this research focuses on quantitatively analysing the above five types of sentences that appeared in students’ assignments in each type of following genres: argumentative, descriptive, process, cause-effect, and comparison-contrast. Data are taken from 10% samples of all population. The finding shows that writing Simple Sentence in paragraphs is a common type of sentence that is used by the students. It indicates that the guiding process to teaching students about writing paragraphs with varied sentence types is important for further development of teaching process of writing.

Abstract

Slang is an informal language that is often used and known by a particular community or society. In this study, the researcher seeks to find out the types of slang and also find out how the functions of slang are used. In this analysis, researchers rely on  Despicable Me 3 as a data source. It is from this film that the data are collected and adapted to the theory that focuses on type and function by Allan and Buridge (2006). To compile the results, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. In collecting data, several stages have been carried out such as watching the film, citing the data, and reviewing it in an effort to adapt it to the theory. As a result, three types of slang were found, namely Fresh and Creative, Flippant, and Imitative. Other types such as clipping and acronym could not be found. Then the researcher observed 5 functions which can also be found in this film, they are to address, to humiliate, to express impression, to initiate and to show intimacy.
