Abstract

Japan and the Netherlands have maintained a special relationship for about 300 years since the adoption of the National Seclusion policy, the so-called sakoku by the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1867). The Dutch began trading with Japan and engaging with Japanese society in 1600, when a Dutch ship, De Liefde, arrived in Kyushu. The Tokugawa government measures regarding foreign policy included regulations on foreign access to Japan and a prohibition on Japanese going abroad. Between the middle of the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, Japan was characterized by a stable political pattern in which representatives of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), were the only Europeans with a right to trade in Japan. In the course of this period, the Japanese evaluation of the Dutch changed from regarding them as commercial agents to seeing them as importers of European knowledge. This paper is especially concerned with the influence of the so-called 'Dutch Studies' (rangaku) on the early modernization of Japan, especially with regard to medicine and the natural sciences. This research examines the development of rangaku and the trading between Japan and VOC at Dejima.

Abstract

Chaos theory explicates how small things can result in big differences. Its basic principles can provide an alternative means for literary and non-literary interpretations. This study will explore how the principles of chaos theory can be utilized, together with commonly used literary theories, as an analytic lens to analyze the dramatic text of Shakespeare. The argument is built upon how Macbeth, viewed as a complex and chaotic system, become a strange attractor for both theater performances and cinematic adaptations, in an effort to understand the interconnection between the play and its reproductions as complex networks. Various elements of the text will be discussed, including its structure, language expressions and character patterning, as well as the choices of action – reaction determined to be taken by the characters in the play.

Abstract

This paper examines the national narrative presented in the biographical film Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka (2014). The analysis employs a film studies approach to explore the interplay between visual and narrative strategies within the framework of Eisenstein's theoretical perspectives. Christian Metz's semiotic theory is utilized to decode the signs embedded throughout the film. The study focuses on the visual and narrative strategies employed in the biopic to elucidate the national narrative, particularly through the portrayal of the character Soekarno and his interactions with other key figures. Visual strategies, encompassing cinematography and mise-en-scene techniques, bring to light signs that are intricately linked to national narratives. Simultaneously, the narrative strategy reinforces the coherence of this narrative through pivotal plot points in the film's storyline. In this biopic, audio is construed as an underpinning element that enhances the information and meaning already conveyed through the visuals. The holistic analysis of visual, narrative, and auditory components provides a comprehensive understanding of how the national narrative is constructed and conveyed in Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka.

Abstract

This study examines how working mothers negotiate her gender role and strategize in facing the condition when domestic and public sphere exist in one space called home after the outbreak COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The research questions are ” how far does working from home give an impact in changing patriarchal gender relation and distribution of work division at home?”, and “to what extends women modify their home functions in coping with COVID 19 pandemic condition and in minimizing patriarchal authority at their own home?” The research uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and questioner filling, and focuses on samples of 30 middle class working women, living in Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) area. This study argues that as the impact of Covid pandemic condition, the middle class working mothers, who have been “forced to go back” to their homes, seemingly, use their homes as “struggling places” to renegotiate the old patriarchal role divisions and unequal gender/power relations. Moreover, it is argued that their homes, to some extends, are used as learning sites for gender equality values, and modified to fulfill their extended functions: as domestic, work, and social spheres.
