Abstract

Penggunaan Artificial Intelligence (AI) dalam pendidikan telah menjadi inovasi signifikan, terutama dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Keterampilan listening adalah aspek penting namun menantang dalam pembelajaran bahasa, khususnya dalam persiapan ujian TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Di SMA Islam Krian Sidoarjo, keterampilan listening siswa masih perlu ditingkatkan untuk mencapai skor TOEFL yang memadai. Oleh karena itu, program pelatihan ini dirancang untuk memanfaatkan teknologi AI guna meningkatkan keterampilan listening siswa. Metode pengabdian ini melibatkan survei awal untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan spesifik siswa dan guru, pengembangan materi listening berbasis AI, serta pelatihan guru dalam penggunaan teknologi AI. Hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa teknologi AI dapat menyesuaikan materi pembelajaran dengan kebutuhan individu siswa, memberikan umpan balik real-time, dan memungkinkan pengulangan materi. Pelatihan guru juga berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam mengintegrasikan AI ke dalam kurikulum dan memberikan umpan balik efektif kepada siswa. Implementasi materi dalam kelas menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan listening siswa, dengan rata-rata skor meningkat sebesar 30%. Program ini tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan listening siswa tetapi juga memberdayakan guru dalam memanfaatkan teknologi AI untuk pembelajaran yang lebih efektif. Hasil ini menunjukkan potensi besar untuk pengembangan lebih lanjut dan penerapan di sekolah-sekolah lain di Indonesia, menjadikan AI sebagai alat penting dalam meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of ethnoliteracy strategies grounded in Majapahit culture within BIPA programs to enhance linguistic skills, intercultural awareness, and learner engagement. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research involved semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, and classroom observations to collect data from participants. Thematic analysis and triangulation were used to identify recurring themes and validate findings. Results indicate that the incorporation of Majapahit cultural elements, such as proverbs and folktales, significantly improved participants' language retention, practical application, and cultural empathy. Participants reported heightened motivation and a deeper connection to Bahasa Indonesia as a living language intertwined with history and cultural values. This study highlights the transformative potential of integrating local heritage into language education and offers practical implications for designing culturally responsive curricula in BIPA programs.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effectiveness of an online English speaking instruction program in improving the speaking skills of adult learners in Indonesia. A total of 60 participants were divided into two groups: the experimental group (received ten weeks of online instruction) and the control group (received no intervention). The program employed a blended learning approach that included instructional videos, interactive exercises, and virtual speaking sessions with both native and non-native English-speaking instructors. Pre-tests and post-tests based on the IELTS speaking rubric were used to assess improvement. Results showed a significant increase in speaking scores in the experimental group, with an average gain of 1.5 points (from 5.2 to 6.7, p<0.01), while the control group showed no significant change (from 5.1 to 5.0). This study demonstrates that well-designed online learning can effectively enhance Indonesian students' English speaking skills, particularly in remote areas. Qualitative feedback highlights several strengths of the program, such as flexibility, convenience, and engaging content, although some participants experienced technical issues and internet connectivity problems. Therefore, online programs should include interactive elements and address technical challenges to optimize learning outcomes. Further research is recommended to explore various online teaching approaches and the impact of internet access disparities. Overall, digital learning is seen as an effective and scalable alternative for English education in Indonesia. ABSTRACT Studi ini meneliti efektivitas program pembelajaran berbicara bahasa Inggris secara daring dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara peserta didik dewasa di Indonesia. Sebanyak 60 peserta dibagi menjadi dua kelompok: kelompok eksperimen (menerima pembelajaran daring selama sepuluh minggu) dan kelompok kontrol (tidak menerima intervensi). Program ini menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran campuran yang mencakup video pembelajaran, latihan interaktif, dan sesi berbicara virtual dengan instruktur penutur asli dan non-penutur asli bahasa Inggris. Tes awal dan tes akhir berdasarkan rubrik IELTS speaking digunakan untuk menilai peningkatan kemampuan. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan skor berbicara yang signifikan pada kelompok eksperimen, dengan rata-rata peningkatan sebesar 1,5 poin (dari 5,2 menjadi 6,7, p<0,01), sementara kelompok kontrol tidak menunjukkan perubahan signifikan (dari 5,1 menjadi 5,0). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran daring yang dirancang dengan baik dapat secara efektif meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris peserta didik di Indonesia, terutama di daerah terpencil. Umpan balik kualitatif mengungkap kelebihan program ini, seperti fleksibilitas, kenyamanan, dan materi yang menarik, meskipun beberapa peserta menghadapi kendala teknis dan masalah koneksi internet. Oleh karena itu, program daring sebaiknya mencakup elemen interaktif dan solusi atas kendala teknis untuk memaksimalkan hasil belajar. Studi lanjutan disarankan untuk mengeksplorasi berbagai pendekatan pengajaran daring dan dampak perbedaan akses internet. Secara keseluruhan, pembelajaran digital dipandang sebagai alternatif yang efektif dan skalabel untuk pendidikan bahasa Inggris di Indonesia.

Abstract

For university students, a skill in writing a good summary of articles, books and other sources is very important. Rhetorical Précis, a summarizing template that consists of four dense and direct sentences, can be used to compose a precise summary. This research aims at exploring EFL students’ perceptions of the use of Rhetorical Précis. Using a survey study, a five-degree questionnaire was spread out to 47 students who had attended the Critical Reading course at a reputable university in Surabaya, Indonesia. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively. In addition, a semi-structured interview was held with four of the students. The interview was recorded and transcribed to meet the need of this study. The findings of this study showed that most of the students had positive perceptions of each element of Rhetorical Précis. In short, the students perceived that the Rhetorical Précis summarizing template could be used  by the students to make a summary of the original texts precisely and accurately.
