An advertisement is an announcement or news about a product, event or job to convince people to be interested. Verbal and nonverbal are communication tools that humans use to interact, whether through messages, images, and gestures. Travel advertisements are intended to promote tourist attractions or destinations to travelers who are about to take a trip to Bali. The data comes from the Instagram account of Bali 2 Tour. The data was obtained by a qualitative method. The analytical process begins with the analysis of verbal and non-verbal signs based on semiotic theory of (Chandler, 2022). The analysis of the meaning of the linguistic and non-verbal signs was carried out using the meaning theory proposed by Barthes (1977) and the color analysis was performed using the color term theory proposed by Wierzbicka (1996) proposed. The results show that travel advertisements provide information to readers or tourists who are about to travel to Bali about interesting places to visit.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether students’ cumulative Grade Point Average can serve as a predictor of their English proficiency as measured by an institutional English test. The research addresses the broader question of how general academic achievement relates to language competence in higher education settings. Employing a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 115 undergraduate students who had both an officially recorded Grade Point Average and an institutional English proficiency score. Pearson’s product–moment correlation and simple linear regression analyses were used to examine the relationship and predictive strength between the two variables. The findings reveal a moderate and positive correlation (r = 0.55, p < 0.001), indicating that students with higher academic performance tend to achieve better results on the English proficiency test. The regression model was significant, explaining 30.3 percent of the variance in English scores (F= 49.03, p < 0.001). The resulting equation confirms that general academic achievement is a meaningful predictor of language performance. These results highlight the potential use of Grade Point Average as one indicator of readiness for English proficiency benchmarks in higher education. The study also suggests that other factors, such as language exposure, motivation, and learning strategies, may contribute to unexplained variance and should be explored in future research.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language-specifically metaphor, simile, and hyperbole-in the lyrics of Survivor’s 1982 album Eye of the Tiger. Employing a qualitative semiotic approach, the research analyzes 25 instances of figurative language across nine songs. The findings reveal metaphors as the dominant figure of speech (48%), followed by similes (32%) and hyperboles (20%). These rhetorical devices collectively enhance the expression of resilience, empowerment, and adversity, deepening the emotional resonance with listeners. This study addresses a research gap by exploring how these devices interact within the album’s narrative rather than in isolation. The results demonstrate the essential role of figurative language in conveying complex cultural narratives in popular music.
