Not only protected in the authenticity, al-Qur’an should be protected by correct interpretations. Without the proper ones, its function as hudan li al-nās will not be realized. Unfortunately, Uṣūl al-tafsīr as a discipline that protects the validity of interpretation was not as popular as other diciplines like nahw and uṣūl fiqh. This article discusses uṣūl al-tafsīr as an academic discipline taking strategic position is Islamic studies. By studying some literatures, this article concludes that uṣūl al-tafsīr is a part of ulūm al-Qur’ān that is focused on the ways, methods and rules of how al-Quran should be interpreted. Even uṣūl al-tafsīr has been established during prophet’s era, uṣūl al-tafsīr was developed significantly in the 8th century AH which marked by the emergence of books of ulūm al-Qur’ān. Abstract

Recognizing that thematic Qur'anic interpretation has become the most prominent method in the modern era, this study aims to track its evolution in Indonesia. Despite its popularity in academic contexts, there remains a critical gap in examining its application outside of universities. This study focuses on the shifts in interpretative authority and methodology in thematic Qur'anic exegesis across different sectors, including the state, Islamic boarding schools, universities, and individuals. Using a critical analysis method, the study uncovers several key findings. Firstly, there has been an authoritative shift, where Qur'anic commentators in Indonesia are not limited to traditional mufassir but now include scholars from non-religious fields. Secondly, methodological shifts are evident in several aspects: the editorial framing of interpretations, the reduction in the selection of Qur'anic verses used as primary research data, and the emergence of distinct interpretative tendencies. Additionally, there has been a paradigm shift in the relationship between Qur'anic text and social reality, where one approach begins with the Qur'an and leads to an idealistic-normative interpretation, while another starts from social reality and results in an applicative-solutive interpretation. This research fills a crucial academic gap by highlighting the broader changes in thematic exegesis, offering insights into its evolving methodologies and its relevance in addressing contemporary social realities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores literary interpretation (tafsir susastra), which has been revitalized with new enthusiasm and methodologies in the modern era. Language and literature, as central icons of i‘jāz al-Qur’ān (the inimitability of the Qur'an), have received significant attention since the early period of Qur’anic exegesis. So, where lies the renewal voiced by modern literary interpretation? Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article examines two modern exegetes recognized for employing the al-adabī style and method in their interpretations: Bintu Syāṭi’, through her works al-Tafsīr al-Bayānī li al-Qur’ān al-Karīm and Maqāl fī al-Insān: Dirāsah Qur’āniyyah, and Ibn ‘Āshūr with his work al-Tahrīr wa al-Tanwīr. The researcher concludes that modern literary tafsir emerged as a response to al-tafsīr al-ijtimā‘ī, which was considered to overlook linguistic interpretation. Presenting the Qur’an as a literary masterpiece not only broadens the scope of expressing its i‘jāz but also enriches the depth of interpretive understanding. Methodologically, literature assumes a position both as a method and as an approach/style in interpretation. Modern literary tafsir introduces new elements such as the thematic (mawḍū‘ī) method, elaboration of tartīb nuzūlī (chronological order of revelation), modern literary theories, and attention to social issues—reflecting the influence of the ijtimā‘ī style. The dominance of adab in an interpretation is also shaped by the exegete’s background.
