Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses the dispute between the infidels and prophets mentioned in the Qur’an (mujadalah verses). Therefore, the study used refers to the maudu’i method (thematic method). The study concludes that the topic of the mujadalah verses consists of (1) the dispute is a natural human tendency (fiṭrah); (2) the prophets and the truth of the divine revelation were always disputed by the infidel (kāfir); (3) Allah commands the believers (mu’mīn) to debate them wisely (ḥasanah), even though the infidels use the despicable manner (baṭil), and; (4) Allah will difinitely punishes anyone who denies the truth of His revelation.

Abstract

The public sphere in Indonesia features prominent piety demonstrations among middle-class Muslims, showcasing religious performances like al-Quran recitation competitions, Islamic films, and the selection of Muslim ambassadors, which collectively color the Islamic public sphere. Previous studies of middle-class Muslims and their religious practices have closely related to a perspective of the commodification of religion. Therefore, this study aims to provide another perspective on the practice of festival piety as a part of efforts to standardize their piety. This research focused on Putri Muslimah, Muslimah Preneur, and Duta Santri events. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a live-online observation method at the three festivals. The obtained data were analyzed and interpreted using a festival piety concept. It found three findings. First, Puteri Muslimah Indonesia, Duta Santri, and Muslimah Preneur are the locus for forming and demonstrating the piety of middle-class Muslims. Second, piety in the three festivals is a form of cultivation in which one is defined through a compromise of Islamic normativity and class composition. Third, practicing festival piety in the three festivals revives Islamic norms in dressing and class intervention through public spectacles. These findings demonstrate a new explanation of the standardization of Islamic ethics through the operation of Islamic normativity in class ideology.

Abstract

Poverty has been a persistent problem since ancient times. In Indonesia, poverty rates continue to fluctuate. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the number of impoverished individuals as of March 2023 was 25.90 million out of a total population of 278.8 million. It is essential to continue examining why poverty persists globally today, especially since Islam has provided extensive guidance on this issue within the Qur’an. Motivated by these facts, the author has explored poverty from the Qur’anic perspective using Abd al Hayy al Farmawi's thematic interpretation method, analyzed with sociology through cultural and structural approaches. Culturally, several causes of poverty have been identified: first, laziness and lack of perseverance; second, consumptive, inefficient, and stingy behaviors; third, individual destruction; and fourth, a lack of knowledge and education. Structurally, the causes include neoliberalism, capitalism, monopolies, social discrimination, and the arrogance of power. Qur’anically prescribed countermeasures culturally include genuine endeavor, a lifestyle of frugality, efficiency, wisdom, individual reconstruction, and education. Structurally, government intervention is required. The proposed solutions include the prohibition of monopolies, the establishment of justice, and pro-poor policies.

Abstract

This paper examines the construction of an oral interpretation of the Quran on YouTube channels regarding religious moderation and the power-knowledge relationship that influences it. It is motivated by the reality of religious moderation discourse, as informed by studying the Qur’an and its interpretation. It is shared through social media platforms, such as YouTube, and is used to disseminate various perspectives. By employing a qualitative descriptive method and Michel Foucault’s critical discourse analysis of the oral interpretations of four prominent figures in Indonesian society, this article concludes that the discourse on religious moderation in oral interpretations on YouTube operates within a knowledge power network involving Muslim individuals, countries, media, and communities. The interpretations conveyed by the four figures tend to normalize the understanding of religious moderation as part of the broader teachings of Islam, aligning with the agendas of the government, organizations, and the media. The narrative of religious moderation is constructed through the selection of verses, especially QS al-Baqarah: 143, a textual-contextual combination of interpreting and delivery that emphasizes tolerance and anti-extremism. It is interpreted in the Indonesian context, specifically as religious moderation, characterized by individuals who are tolerant, fair, respectful of one another, and not overly inclined or excessively devoted to their religion. However, the dichotomy between "moderate" and “its opponent” in this interpretation reveals the existence of ideological limits imposed by dominant actors, such that the discourse of moderation is not always neutral but functions as a tool of social and political regulation.
