Abstract

As migrant citizen, Muslim communities in Kupang mostly live in strong ethnic group. This continues to produce their specific identity in ethnic group, religion, and economical status to separate from the resident. Reading this as a condition of Ashabiyah, this article discusses a superstructure for whole aspect of life which succeeded to grasp power and economic interest. The condition of ethnic identity boundar y was maintained through both exter nal ascription and inter- nal self-identification which continued to result a ‘hard’ primordialism. Hence, ethnic conflict and violence could be a hard risk for the relationship among ethnic groups in Kupang. This article stimulates a more contemporar y fact where ethnic identity goes far beyond biological nature, where the existence of ethnic fusion takes place and plays a potential factor for a ‘soft’ kind of primordialism. It is an agency stage where a member of an ethnic group got two phases; first while one chooses to re-pursue or to re-embrace an ethnic identity, then the second stage one will use an inter-subjective form of self-maintaining identity.

Abstract

This research studies du’a (wirid, zikr and shalawat) that has been practised by Indonesian muslims to show their response toward Covid-19 outbreak. Using two techniques: survey and interview, this research highlights two model of receptions in living Quran and hadith to understand the practice of du’a. While many consider public ignorance, this research focuses on personal awareness toward the shift of religious gathering (jama’ah) during the quarantine days and their perception of internet-mediated religiosity at the meantime. The result says that the respondents confirm the variability of wirid, zikr, shalawat, such as, li khamsatun, shalawat tibbil qulub and doa pagi dan petang.  However, their engagement with the internet does not parallel to their authority preference; most of the respondents prefer to grasp ijazah(formally transmission) from the closest family and the surrounded ulama network. A contrasting idea is also seen, as they emphasize face-to face ijazah for their own personal matter, some allow others to take the ijazah digitally.

Abstract

The narration of Qur'anic stories, which are identified as non-chronological, often leads to assertions about their function as advice and moral lessons, raising theological questions about their scientific nature. The way people understand these stories often focuses on their lessons and guidance, missing how they relate to the Prophet's da'wah. This study delves into the relationship between these narratives and their historical context, employing qualitative methods and drawing on the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, which suggests that language shapes our understanding of the world. Focusing on the narratives depicting the stories of the Prophets in Surah Hūd [11], the study reveals that the parts of these stories that emphasize the rejection of da'wah resonate with the experiences of Prophet Muhammad. The accounts of the rejected Prophets serve as a catalyst to ignite Prophet Muhammad's fervor for da'wah through the power of language. The portrayal of rejection in every da'wah struggle, accompanied by the narrative of punishment and annihilation, is distinctively crafted in the Qur'an, with a focus on punishment in the afterlife. The Prophet Muhammad's circumstances during the process of proselytizing are the primary factor in arranging the story fragments without chronological order.

Abstract

Minor Islamic pilgrimages (ʿumrah) are increasingly being studied as part of commodified pilgrimages in the age of trade and tourism. This relatively modern construction has restricted researchers’ understandings of practices like pilgrimages to the graves of saints. This article compares two imagined Indonesian Muslim religio-cultural communities performing ʿumrah, utilizing a hybrid ethnography method to obtain data. The paper is structured in two sections. Firstly, it discusses how traditionalist Muslims understand ʿumrah as a means of maintaining the authority of the teachings of Sufi ʿulamāʾ. This group adopts the ethical principles of Sufi practices, which involve three key elements: reverence for Sufi ʿulamāʾ, observance of sacred times, and the recitation of prayers to obtain intercession (shafāʿah) and blessings in life (barākah). The second section explores how another group, guided by Muslim ethics, aligns ʿumrah journeys with the principles of capitalism within Islam. Using global and cosmopolitan Muslim perspectives, these spiritual reformers and coaches approach ʿumrah by creating practices suitable for the aspirations of the middle-class Muslims. They tailor the practice of ʿumrah, based on Islamic practices, to account for the ethical principles of self-managing individuals. This comparative presentation demonstrates diverse Muslim experiences, refraining from a homogenous expression of the ʿumrah. Ultimately, this paper advocates for more comprehensive studies of the ʿumrah pilgrimage in Indonesia, including ones that focus on nuanced expressions of pilgrims and diverse roles played by Islamic religious authorities, moving beyond simplified commercial interpretations.

Firstly, it conducts a textual study focusing on thematic badal Umrah. Secondly, it involves (online) observations and  participation in the activities of various muṭawwifs vloggers based in Saudi Arabia. The result of this research is that cyber-mediated Umrah experiences cannot fully substitute the physical pilgrimage journey. Badal Umrah, primarily rooted in the badal Hajj Hadiths. Consequently, there has been an increased acceptance of Hadiths related to Hajj and Umrah during the pandemic, ." In addition, Muṭawwifs play a pivotal role in facilitating communication between i forced mobility of aspiring pilgrims during the pandemic, thereby emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations. Lastly, the activities in the cyber-space realm align with three essential dimensions: providing an imaginative travel experience for dispersed audiences, engaging muṭawwifs as navigators in the cyber-space, and addressing ethical considerations concerning badal Umrah amidst health and financial challenges.

Abstract

The public sphere in Indonesia features prominent piety demonstrations among middle-class Muslims, showcasing religious performances like al-Quran recitation competitions, Islamic films, and the selection of Muslim ambassadors, which collectively color the Islamic public sphere. Previous studies of middle-class Muslims and their religious practices have closely related to a perspective of the commodification of religion. Therefore, this study aims to provide another perspective on the practice of festival piety as a part of efforts to standardize their piety. This research focused on Putri Muslimah, Muslimah Preneur, and Duta Santri events. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a live-online observation method at the three festivals. The obtained data were analyzed and interpreted using a festival piety concept. It found three findings. First, Puteri Muslimah Indonesia, Duta Santri, and Muslimah Preneur are the locus for forming and demonstrating the piety of middle-class Muslims. Second, piety in the three festivals is a form of cultivation in which one is defined through a compromise of Islamic normativity and class composition. Third, practicing festival piety in the three festivals revives Islamic norms in dressing and class intervention through public spectacles. These findings demonstrate a new explanation of the standardization of Islamic ethics through the operation of Islamic normativity in class ideology.

Abstract

The pilgrimage activities performed by local Muslims in the Safarwadi cave are considered to have a similar function and value as the Hajj pilgrimage activities conducted directly in the city of Mecca. However, this phenomenon is typically excluded from scientific discussions. This study addresses deficiencies in previous research by examining the characteristics, meanings, and community responses to pilgrimage activities performed at Safarwadi cave. This descriptive qualitative study, based on a case study approach, resulted in three significant findings. Firstly, the pilgrimage activities performed by local Muslims at Safarwadi cave have a different set of practices and symbols than those observed in the Hajj activities conducted in the city of Mecca. Secondly, the pilgrimage activities performed at Safarwadi Cave are considered by local Muslims to have the same function and value as the Hajj activities conducted in the city of Mecca. Thirdly, the community’s response to pilgrimage activities performed by local Muslims at Safarwadi cave is considered to be an unbelievable, irrational, and abnormal pilgrimage activity. This study also recommends that in-depth interviews should be conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the pilgrimage activities performed by local Muslims.
