Abstract

Feedback, a crucial component in supporting student learning, has been subject to extensive research in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Although some studies have explored students' emotional reactions to written feedback provided by teachers, there is a scarcity of research on emotional responses to oral feedback. Thus, this case study seeks to enhance the existing literature by investigating how students emotionally react to oral feedback. The study argues that the manner in which oral feedback is delivered can elicit unexpected emotional responses from students. This study was conducted in three senior high schools in Jakarta, Indonesia, with six participants from each school. Each student participated in a semi-structured interview, resulting in a total of 18 interview data. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that students expressed both positive and negative emotions in response to teacher oral feedback, with a tendency towards the latter outweighing the former, resembling an imbalanced scale. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of students' reactions to oral feedback and encourages teachers to reflect on their feedback practices.

Abstract

This study investigated the role of the teachers' F move in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms and how it affected teacher-student interaction in the classroom. The F move, also known as feedback, is considered an important part of the classroom interaction as it serves two primary roles: evaluative and discoursal. This study used secondary data of classroom interaction during English lesson in two senior high schools in Indonesia. The data were then analysed using the Conversation Analysis (CA) approach. The findings of the current study showed that the teachers used the F move mostly served its evaluative role and there was no evidence of the F move serving its discoursal role. This study suggested the need for teachers to re-evaluate the current teaching practice, especially the way they provided feedback or used the F move as a response to students' answers.

Abstract

Abstract

In today’s globalized business environment, English plays a vital role in professional communication, especially in non-English-speaking countries like Indonesia. This study explores English language usage in Indonesian workplaces, the challenges employees encounter, and their motivation to improve proficiency. It aims to understand how English affects workplace dynamics and identify strategies to enhance communication. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire completed by employees across various sectors. The 26-item instrument measured language use, perceived difficulties, attitudes, and motivation on a 5-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to interpret the findings. Results indicate that receptive skills (e.g., reading English documents) are used more frequently than productive skills (e.g., speaking in meetings). Participants reported moderate difficulties in expressing ideas and understanding accents, but showed strong awareness of English’s importance and high motivation to improve. Additionally, there was a strong expectation for organizational support, such as training programs and communication policies. This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to bridge communication gaps and promote effective English usage. With high employee motivation and clear institutional demand, organizations have a valuable opportunity to strengthen their workforce's communicative competence and global competitiveness.

Abstract

Language learners have come to an era in which studying outside the classroom is well-facilitated by technology development. Along with this advancement, there is a wider chance to learn things outside the classroom, including language. In the Indonesian context, many students have done wider exploration to improve their English exposure through various activities. This study aims to reveal the learning strategies done by a successful EFL learner through case study research. The result shows that online games, e-books, and movies are some of the prominent learning tools of  Language Learning Beyond the Classroom (LLBC) to enhance language exposure and learners’ autonomy.
