Abstract

As teachers are an essential element in education, there is always a need to improve their skills from time to time. The training that teachers get varies, depending on the need of the teachers themselves or the institution they work for. In Al-Hasra Foundation, there is a need for internationalizing the institution so the teachers were equipped with training on EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction). This training was the first training conducted to meet the internalization need of the institution. Therefore, this study was aimed at knowing the perception the teachers have towards the first implementation of the training. The result of this research is beneficial for both the teachers and the institution because the teachers' perception will affect the success of the training itself for both sides. Fifteen non-English teachers of Al Hasra foundation joined the teacher training. The data of this research were taken from the questionnaires and the classroom observation. The results of the questionnaires were analyzed to get the percentage while the classroom observation was analyzed to enrich the findings. The result showed that teachers of Al-Hasra Foundation performed a positive perception towards the pilot teacher training on EMI by demonstrating that the training has improved their knowledge of the use of English in a classroom context, and it has increased their motivation and self-confidence in conducting the teaching activity in English.

Abstract

The distinct research of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) for International Relations (IR) students is rarely explored despite the growing need of ESP for this particular group of students.  These students must demonstrate proficiency in specific language competences for a variety of purposes, including arguing, negotiating, and participating in IR-related debates. Facilitating students' ownership of the necessary capabilities is critical to ensuring that they acquire them successfully. This study aims to depict the important use of needs analysis in syllabus making for EFIR (English for International Relations). A decent preparation of the syllabus contributes to the success of the ESP implementation. In this study, the researcher involved students and expert practitioners’ intuitions as the sources of the needs analysis. The participants of this research were 108 IR students and two expert practitioners. These students were asked to filled out a questionnaire while some more-detailed interviews were conducted by involving nine stand out students that represent high, middle and low-achiever students. In addition, the four expert practitioners that consist of two lecturers and two IR graduates were interviewed to enrich the needs analysis data. All of the data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The finding of this study is the syllabus that can be applied for universities that provide the same ESP program for its students. The syllabus that was constructed by considering the stakeholders' needs analysis hopefully could be a useful guidance for EFIR implementation.

Abstract

Field trips have long been recognized as a significant component of educational endeavours. While students at the primary and secondary levels commonly engage in such activities, the integration of field trips into tertiary education remains infrequent. University studend who attend the English classes are seldom afforded the opportunity to directly observe authentic professional environments or explore potential workplaces related to their future careers, experiences that can be facilitated through field trips. Additionally, given the increasing emphasis on the internship program held by Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, a gap arises as students are limited in their exposure to real-world work environments. The objective of this research endeavour was to investigate university students' perceptions of field trip activities and assess how these experiences contribute to the development of students' autonomous learning skills. Qualitative data for this study were collected through two questionnaires, a preparation and a reflection Google sheet. The participants consisted of 27 students enrolled in the International Relations Study Program at UPN Veteran Jakarta. The findings of the study revealed that field trips offer numerous benefits to English for Professional Purposes students, including enhancing their understanding of academic concepts, providing a deeper real-world context for learning, and fostering social interaction. The questionnaire results demonstrated a predominantly positive perception among the students. Furthermore, a majority of the participants reported engaging in autonomous learning activities during the field trip, facilitated by the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and seek their guidance through questioning.

Abstract

The Use of Communicative Games in English Learning Activities for Mts Nurul Iman Orphanage Students The community service carried out at the Nurul Iman Orphanage in Depok aims to present teaching that is more enjoyable with the learning methods that they students and teacher do not use in learning in the classroom. The students involved in this community service were 18 Madrasah Tsanawiyah students from mixed grades of grades 7, 8 and 9. The implementation of learning using communicative games was divided into three learning stages: pre, whilst, and post teaching. From the observations and also the analysis of the completed questionnaires by the students, it can be concluded that the students at the Nurul Iman Orphanage like the use of the learner-centered method through communicative games because of the benefits they experience during the training. In addition to making learning more enjoyable, students get higher motivation and self-confidence compared to learning using conventional methods that focus on the teacher (teacher-centered) in which they spend a lot of learning time with lectures and answering questions from textbook. This community service activity focuses on speaking. Therefore, there is a need for other innovations that need to be done to improve other language skills.

Abstract

Academic writing is one of the required courses that first-year students must undertake. It can be particularly challenging, considering the students might have never taken such a course in high school. This study sought to understand students’ familiarity with academic writing and determine the factors affecting undergraduate students’ academic writing improvement. This descriptive study used multi methods combining quantitative and qualitative, employing both closed and open-ended questionnaires as the main data source. The participants were 129 first-year undergraduate students majoring in Political Science and taking an academic writing course in semester one. Data analysis showed that while most students were familiar with the types and structures of academic writing, they did not understand how to build strong introductory and body paragraphs. This study also revealed intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting students’ academic writing improvement. The practical implications of this study were twofold. Firstly, the university needs to examine and improve the academic writing course syllabus so students can taste a better learning experience leading to an improved understanding of academic writing. Secondly, students should start taking more responsibility for their academic writing learning instead of just relying on the lecturers for information.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalized world, knowledge of English has become critical for university graduates of all majors. English proficiency is not only required to access these opportunities, but it is also a prerequisite for competing in the international labour market. Despite its relevance, many graduates suffer difficulties as a result of their lack of English proficiency. Even though General English (GE) classes are widely available, they may not fully educate students for the unique demands of their future employment. This emphasizes the importance of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, which are tailored to address the specific needs of students based on the Need Analysis (NA). However, in subjects such as International Relations (IR), research on ESP and NA remains limited. This study investigated students’ perceptions of the current English for International Relations (EFIR) syllabus and gathered feedback for its improvement. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed as part of a Research and Development (RD) study. Data were collected through questionnaires (n=60) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) (n=15). The study discovered that, while both basic (92%) and advanced EFIR students (96%) were generally satisfied with the syllabus, advanced students suggested adding more modern diplomatic themes, practical experiences, and interactive learning methodologies to increase engagement and knowledge. This study underscored the necessity of refining ESP syllabus based on student feedback to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. Future research should explore the long-term impact of these syllabus modifications on students’ professional readiness.

Abstract

Rapid growth of studies on Chat-GPT acceptance within the broader context of AI in education (AIEd) has provided valuable insights into how participants across settings perceive and use this tool for teaching and learning. This study replicates earlier investigations on AI acceptance but narrows the focus to a specific task: editing and proofreading. It also expands the inquiry to address ethical concerns and overreliance-two recurring themes in AIEd research. A modified extended TAM questionnaire covering seven aspects was distributed to 71 first-year EFL university students enrolled in a writing course that permitted Chat-GPT only for editing and proofreading, with clear restrictions. Group interviews were also conducted. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; qualitative data were examined thematically. Findings reveal a consistent three-step use of Chat-GPT: prompting, pasting the manuscript, and reviewing. Students treated AI output as a draft for enhancement, not as final work. Variation emerged in how much students revised AI-suggested edits, suggesting differing levels of reliance. The study confirms that perceived usefulness and ease of use contribute to students’ attitudes and intentions, moderated by self-image and subjective norms. While long-term dependency remains unclear, students appeared cautious when boundaries were set. This study suggests that when lecturers provide clear guidelines, students tend to view Chat-GPT as a learning aid and show awareness of academic integrity and authorship. The findings underline the need for well-defined institutional policies on AI use in writing instruction, while acknowledging the study’s contextual limitations and the need for further research.
