Abstract

This research aims to analyze the resistance efforts of West Papuans in land blocking in the form of demands for compensation, customary bars, complaints and demands, coordination with other parties and the use of traditional leadership systems. In Papuan culture, talking about land means talking about people at the same time. On the other hand, this research also analyzes the phenomenon of land blocking as a form of resistance to the development process in Papua. This stems from the concept that development that does not involve the community in the planning process will have an impact on the process. Resistance is seen as a model of resistance to the development process in the form of rejection, blockading and even carried out openly in the form of protests and demonstrations. The method used is qualitative research, using an ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interviews and literature studies. Data analysis in the study adopted the Miles and Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings show that land for the Papuan people has a very important role in life and is interpreted as Mama who contains and gives life to humans. In addition, resistance is understood as a form of protest against the development process carried out on the land of the Papuan people

Abstract

This article explores the Tombor Maghi ritual among the Fakfak community in West Papua Province, Indonesia, which strengthens interfaith relations, particularly between Muslims and Christians. Originally part of a traditional marriage custom, the ritual has developed into a broader form of community solidarity involving cross-religious cooperation. While scholars in anthropology and sociology have extensively studied rituals, research that focuses explicitly on rituals within the context of inter-religious relations remains relatively underdeveloped. This study addresses three main research questions: how the Tombor Maghi ritual is practiced and interpreted by the Fakfak community across religious affiliations; what role the ritual plays in fostering interfaith cooperation and reinforcing communal solidarity; and what symbolic and social significance the ritual holds within the broader framework of lived religion and indigenous approaches to peacebuilding. This study employs a qualitative methodology, utilising a realist ethnographic approach. Data were collected through interviews and field observations conducted in Fakfak Regency. The findings indicate that Tombor Maghi continues to be preserved as a form of cultural dialogue that weaves together interfaith relations. The ritual reflects cultural knowledge that is created, transmitted, and practised in daily life. It provides a space for Muslims and Christians to collaborate through community-based initiatives, such as at mosques and churches. In light of these findings, further research related to this topic is suggested because there are still many interesting issues to discuss in connection with rituals that have become a philosophy in social life.

Abstract

Studies on ritual have been extensively conducted by scholars in anthropology, notably Victor Turner (1920–1983) and Max Gluckman (1911–1975), who examined the complexity and dynamics of ritual in relation to customs, social conflict, and individual and collective integration among African societies. Within sociology, Emile Durkheim (1858–1917) and Jeffrey C. Alexander (1947) explored the correlation between rites, religious beliefs, and social performance. However, research on ritual specifically addressing interreligious relations through the lens of cultural sociology remains limited. This study examines the Tombor Maghi ritual practiced by the Fakfak community in West Papua as a means of strengthening interfaith relations between Islam and Christianity. Originally performed within the context of marriage, the ritual has undergone a significant expansion of meaning, now encompassing the construction of a mosque (Wewowo Maesjid Maghi), a church (Wewowo Gereja Maghi), an educational institution (Wewowo STT Maghi), and a customary community organization (Wewowo Lembaga Masyarakat Adat Maghi) in Fakfak Regency. This study addresses the ontological question of how the Fakfak community understands the Tombor Maghi ritual in fostering Islamic-Christian relations. A qualitative method employing a realist ethnographic approach was adopted, with data collected through interviews and field observations conducted in Fakfak Regency. The study concludes that the Tombor Maghi ritual continues to serve as a medium of dialogue and a lived text for weaving interfaith relations, particularly within the domain of marriage. Furthermore, the ritual has undergone cultural reproduction, whereby communities of differing religious, ethnic, cultural, and educational backgrounds collaborate in the construction and inauguration of religious and educational facilities. The preservation of this ritual within the fabric of everyday life reflects a politics of pluralism in the Fakfak community, functioning as a collective strategy for cultivating sustainable interreligious harmony.

Abstract

Interreligious dialogue has become an urgent necessity in plural societies because social peace cannot be sustained through formal tolerance alone, but must also be grounded in shared everyday practices rooted in local culture. This study aims to analyse the relevance and implementation of Paul F. Knitter’s thought in the socio-religious life of the people of Fakfak. This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach to understand the meanings, social practices, and value systems that support interreligious dialogue in Fakfak Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving religious leaders and customary leaders selected purposively. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of attending to experience, transcribing experience, analysing experience, and reading experience, and was further strengthened by the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and verification. The findings show that interreligious dialogue in Fakfak is concretely manifested through the practices of Gereja Maghi and Mesjid Maghi, interfaith mutual cooperation in the construction of houses of worship, reciprocal participation in religious celebrations, and kinship relations across different faiths. The study also reveals that the philosophy of Satu Tungku Tiga Batu, together with the values of Idu-idu, Mani-Nina, and Jojor, serves as a socio-cultural foundation that reinforces interreligious harmony. The implication of this study is that the strengthening of interreligious harmony in Indonesia needs to be built through the integration of interfaith dialogue and local wisdom as a contextual and sustainable social praxis.

Abstract

Abstract : This study examines the dynamics of mission and evangelism within the Gereja Protestan Indonesia (GPI) Papua in the context of social change, religious plurality, and the transformation of church ministry in Papua. Mission and evangelism are understood not merely as efforts to expand church institutions, but as the proclamation of the Gospel centered on the salvific work of Jesus Christ while upholding human freedom and dignity. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive–interpretive method through a literature study of various theological, historical, and contextual sources related to church ministry in Papua. The findings reveal that the implementation of mission within GPI Papua has evolved from an institutional model of evangelism toward a more dialogical, contextual, and transformative approach. Within the multicultural and multireligious context of Papuan society, the church is challenged to develop a paradigm of peaceful mission that emphasizes social service, interreligious dialogue, education, healthcare, and community empowerment as integral dimensions of Christian witness. The study further identifies several major challenges faced by GPI Papua’s mission ministry, including social changes driven by modernization and digitalization, interreligious relations, limited ministerial resources, and the need for contextual theological formation. Therefore, the transformation of church mission should be directed toward strengthening the spirituality of ministry, increasing congregational participation, and developing mission approaches that are relevant to the social realities of Papuan society. In this sense, church mission is understood not only as verbal proclamation, but also as the praxis of ecclesial presence that embodies peace, justice, and social solidarity within society.   Keywords: church mission, evangelism, GPI Papua, ministry transformation, interreligious dialogue, Papua
