Abstract

Fishing with purse seine fishing gear has been carried out by many fishermen, which are generally aimed at catching pelagic fish. Jepara District is one of the coastal areas of the North Coast of Java, located in Central Java Province. This condition makes Jepara Regency have a marine-based economic side of life which has the potential of fish resources that have been used by local fishermen for a long time. The current condition has a tendency to decline in production, which is thought to be due to overfishing. This study aims to obtain an overview of the dominant fish caught by the purse seine and to see the productivity of the purse seine. The research method used is a survey method, by conducting interviews with 20 fishermen, the head of the Ujungbatu Fish Auction Place (TPI) and his staff. The data obtained are data on catch production, composition of types of catch and other data. The results are expected to be able to provide an overview of the dominant fish catch and productivity of purse siene in the waters of Jepara District. The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that there are three types of fish that are dominant catch, namely layang fish, mackerel and squid. During the last five years (from 2015 - 2019), production tends to experience a significant decline. Meanwhile, the productivity has also decreased as well. Based on the calculation of the productivity level according to KEPMEN KP No.61/2014, the productivity level (2019) of purse seines that land their catch at TPI Ujungbatu Jepara is 4.45, meaning that the production produced in 2019 year is 4.45 tons per vessel 1 GT used. Abstract

Because of overfishing and dynamic of the fish abundance, the purse seiners in Jepara decreased sharply. Overfishing relates to effort while the fish abundance is closly linked with the fluctuation of the fishing season. The fishing season greatly affected to the effectiveness of mini purse seine operating in Jepara. The objective of the study was to evaluate pattern of mini purse seine operating in Jepara based on IMP and operating seasons (effort) according to the dominant fish and recommendation for preciseness operating season (effective). The data were created by the TPI Ujungbatu which started in the year 2015-2019, comprising data from the dominant fish production and effort from mini purse seine Jepara. The dominant catch of mini purse seine Jepara are short mackerel, scads and squids. Data were processed into CPUE each of the dominant fish and analysed by moving average methods to get the score of season index (IMP). The diagram of IMP then overlaid with diagram of effort. The result showed that response of mini purse seine fishermen were over than IMP fishes, consist February-April, August-September and November. It was due to shortage of information for the fish abundance season and particularly dynamic state of nature. The effective operation of mini purse seine Jepara occurred in February (squids), June-July (short mackerels) and August, October (scads).

Abstract

The fisheries sector on Panggang Island contributes significantly to the local economy, but efforts to optimally increase fish production still face challenges. Fish production is one of the main factors in determining the economic value of fisheries, so it is essential to know the extent of the relationship between fish production volume and production value. This study aims to analyze this relationship using the Pearson correlation analysis approach, which measures the closeness of the linear relationship between the two variables. The results show that the volume of fisheries production has a very close and positive relationship with production value. The correlation coefficient value of fishing units on Panggang Island is above 0.9, namely fishing rods (0.98), traps (0.99), and nets (0.99), which indicates that increasing production volume directly affects increasing production value. Strategies for optimizing fisheries production include using efficient and environmentally friendly fishing technology, business planning based on feasibility analysis, managing fishing activities according to the season, expanding market access, and strengthening the supply chain. These findings form the basis for strategic decision-making in increasing the productivity and sustainability of the fisheries sector on Panggang Island.

Abstract

The capture fishery of squid (Loligo chinensis) in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, particularly at TPI Batu Belubang, is an important sector in supporting food security and the local economy. Squid, being a high-economic value commodity, is greatly influenced by environmental factors and seasonal patterns, thus requiring a sustainable management approach. This study aims to analyze the seasonal catch patterns of squid using the Seasonal Catch Index (IMP) method based on Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) data over the period of 2020–2024. The analysis results indicate significant seasonal fluctuations, with the highest IMP value in November (230.78%) and the lowest in March (23.16%), generally correlating with oceanographic conditions such as water temperature and nutrient availability, which influence squid distribution. These findings underscore the necessity of season-based fishery management strategies, including quota regulation, temporary closures during low seasons, and regular utilization of CPUE data, to sustain squid stocks and enhance catch efficiency in the future. Abstract

Central Bangka is a coastal area endowed with significant pelagic fishery resources. Barracuda fish (Sphyraena spp.) representing one of the economically valuable commodities, predominantly caught using handline fishing gear. However, the lack of adequate information on fishing seasons remains a major challenge in ensuring consistent supply, which in turn affects the efficiency of fisheries logistics and the stability of the distribution chain. This study aims to analyze the fishing seasonality, fishing effort, and distribution patterns of barracuda in Central Bangka as a basis for developing a more efficient and adaptive fisheries logistics system. The data used were obtained from monthly catch records and the number of handline fishing trips at the Batu Belubang Fish Landing Center (TPI) during the 2020–2024 period. The analysis involved calculating the Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) and the Fishing Season Index (IMP) using the moving average method, followed by a comparative assessment between the IMP values and fishing effort patterns to evaluate fishermen’s responsiveness to seasonal fish availability. The results indicated that peak fishing seasons for barracuda occur in January, March, May–June, and October. Nevertheless, a mismatch between fishing effort and IMP values was observed, indicating both overcapacity and undercapacity during certain periods. These inefficiencies contribute to imbalances in the supply and distribution of barracuda. Among the identified peak months, May was determined to be the most efficient period for barracuda fishing in Central Bangka waters
