Abstract

The logical fallacies that emerged in the 2024 Indonesian vice-presidential candidate debates is interested. By analyzing debate through a descriptive qualitative approach and employing Damer's (2009) classification theory, the study evaluates the presence of unconvincing arguments in the discourse of the three vice-presidential candidates. Logical fallacies, which are errors in reasoning, can obscure listeners and impact comprehension and the quality of arguments in a debate. Data were collected by transcribing argumentative speeches from two YouTube videos of the debates. There were 120 utterances produced by the three vice-presidential candidates. From 120 utterances, 60 logical fallacies were found. The findings reveal that the most prevalent logical fallacies included red herrings (16.67%), where candidates diverted attention from relevant topics to irrelevant ones.  Ad hominem attacks (11.67%) were also common. Additionally, appeals to authority (11.67%) cited influential figures to support his argument on "ecological repentance," without strengthening the logical foundation of his argument. This research underscores the importance of recognizing cognitive biases that can undermine argument objectivity. The study highlights the need for heightened awareness of rhetorical manipulation among speakers and audiences to foster a more critical and informed debate culture. The study contributes to political communication studies by providing insights into the rhetorical strategies used in Indonesian political debates and their implications for democratic engagement. The prevalence of logical fallacies points to the necessity for improved debate standards to enhance rational political discourse, ultimately benefiting the democratic process by encouraging informed and constructive participation

Abstract

Most translation studies examine translation aspects; nevertheless, this study explores translation aspects combined with pragmatics, focusing on the study of positive politeness. A novel entitled Reflected in You contains many instances of complex positive politeness strategies and their translations. This novel is written by Silvia Day, a best-selling novelist. Data in the form of utterances representing positive politeness strategies were collected and analyzed to determine their types. Additionally, the translations of these utterances were assessed by three raters to evaluate their quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research analyzes the types of positive politeness strategies in Reflected in You. Furthermore, the researchers examine and classify the translation strategies by using the frameworks to assess translation quality proposed byz Albir (2002) and Nababan et al. (2012). The results show that there are 12 positive politeness sub-strategies identified. The most dominant sub-strategy is the use of group identity markers, which accounts for 17 data units (34%). In this study, 8 translation techniques were identified, with the literal translation technique being the most dominant, used 22 times (37.28%). Regarding translation quality, out of 50 data samples, 43 (86%) were deemed accurate, and 40 (80%) were considered acceptable. Overall, the translation techniques applied to the utterances representing positive politeness strategies successfully conveyed the messages from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) with clarity.

Abstract

Dental caries is one of the major health issues among school-aged children, particularly in the age range of 6-9 years. The lack of awareness about the importance of maintaining dental health from an early age is a contributing factor to the high prevalence of caries in children, which can be addressed through interactive media like illustrated books. This community service project aims to raise awareness about dental care among first-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Harapan Jaya, Sukarame, Bandar Lampung. The methods used include a pre-test, group reading sessions, reading the illustrated book, and a post-test. The pre-test results showed an improvement in students' understanding of dental health after reading the illustrated book, with post-test scores being higher than pre-test scores. This interactive illustrated book provides an engaging and easy-to-understand way of conveying health information, making it a useful tool for dental health education.
