Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation strategy of Adele's song lyrics “Someone Like You” by using Peter Newmark's translation theory. In this theory, there are eight translation strategies, but this study focuses on three main strategies, namely semantic, faithful, and communicative translation. Five song lyric data were selected to be analyzed based on the application of these three strategies. Semantic translation emphasizes faithfulness to the original meaning of the source text, faithful translation emphasizes more on maintaining the structure and style of the original language, while communicative translation focuses on adaptation so that the message can be understood by the target audience. The research approach is descriptive qualitative, by analyzing the lyric data translated through the three strategies. The result of the research shows that faithful translation is a strategy that is often used in translating the lyrics of the song “Someone Like You”. This can be seen in the attempt to maintain the structure, style, and emotional nuances of the original lyrics. However, semantic and semantic and communicative strategies are also used in certain parts to ensure the meaning of the lyrics is maintained and relevant to Indonesian-speaking listeners. This research contributes to understanding of the application of Newmark's theory in the translation of song lyrics and provides insights into how faithfulness to the source text can be prioritized in the translation of musical literature. musical literature.

Abstract

Most translation studies examine translation aspects; nevertheless, this study explores translation aspects combined with pragmatics, focusing on the study of positive politeness. A novel entitled Reflected in You contains many instances of complex positive politeness strategies and their translations. This novel is written by Silvia Day, a best-selling novelist. Data in the form of utterances representing positive politeness strategies were collected and analyzed to determine their types. Additionally, the translations of these utterances were assessed by three raters to evaluate their quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research analyzes the types of positive politeness strategies in Reflected in You. Furthermore, the researchers examine and classify the translation strategies by using the frameworks to assess translation quality proposed byz Albir (2002) and Nababan et al. (2012). The results show that there are 12 positive politeness sub-strategies identified. The most dominant sub-strategy is the use of group identity markers, which accounts for 17 data units (34%). In this study, 8 translation techniques were identified, with the literal translation technique being the most dominant, used 22 times (37.28%). Regarding translation quality, out of 50 data samples, 43 (86%) were deemed accurate, and 40 (80%) were considered acceptable. Overall, the translation techniques applied to the utterances representing positive politeness strategies successfully conveyed the messages from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) with clarity.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of English use in Indonesian television advertisements, specifically analyzing the brand Kopi Good Day through a sociolinguistic approach. As globalization influences marketing strategies, the incorporation of foreign languages, particularly English, has become prevalent in Indonesia. While prior research has examined the effectiveness of foreign language advertising, there is a notable gap in understanding how this practice impacts local cultural values and consumer perceptions within Indonesia's multilingual context. The purpose of this study is to explore how attitudes and cultural identity among Indonesian audiences aged 18-35 are influenced by the use of the English language. To this effect, the present research has adopted a qualitative approach because it involves content analysis of selected Kopi Good Day advertisements and indepth interviews with around 20 to 30 individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds. The initial results show that 60% of the respondents believe that the use of the English language association makes the brand sound modern; while 30% are of the view that such an association will in due course undermine the cultural values at the local level. Another 70% said this would make the product more attractive and trendy for a younger audience, but 20% find it confusing since not everyone understands English very well. These findings testify to the greater complication in the interrelationship of global branding and local identity and point to the need for sensitivity on the part of advertisers to such dynamics. In this case, this study contributes to developing culturally sensitive advertising strategies that resonate with diverse consumer demographics in Indonesia, providing insights into how foreign language use in advertising can reflect and shape cultural identity in a rapidly globalizing society.
