Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender and social class stereotypes in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The data were collected by analyzing key scenes and dialogues in the movie, focusing on instances that reflect stereotypes. The analysis employed theories of gender and social class stereotypes to examine how these stereotypes are represented and portrayed within the main characters, Katniss Everdeen, President Snow, and Plutarch. The findings reveal that gender stereotypes are more dominant than social class stereotypes in the film. The main female character subverts traditional gender roles, displaying strength and independence in contrast to the conventional portrayal of women as weak and reliant on men. Additionally, social class stereotypes are depicted through discrimination and prejudice against lower-class characters. This research aims to enhance readers’ critical understanding of gender and social class representations, promote gender equality, and encourage respect for social diversity.

Abstract

Learning methods in English subjects require the right strategy. Starting from the provision of laboratories and learning facilities to software. Generally, the learning material cannot be separated from material in the form of audio or video. However, some schools, especially schools that are in the limited category in terms of providing materials, need to do other ways so that their students can learn English well in class or independently. Text-to-speech and speech recognition technology implemented through software accompanied by images makes learning pronunciation and vocabulary more interesting and interactive for students who take extracurricular activities or study in English classes. This service helps extracurricular English teachers at SD YBPK Ngaglik Malang in completing and adding teaching methods not only through paper media, but also media that support interactive activities for students, both independently and in groups, resulting in an increase in pronunciation skills and vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Although there is empirical support for the Before-During-After (BDA) strategy, there is still a gap in its application in extensive reading programs, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study investigates the effectiveness of the Before-During-After (BDA) strategy in enhancing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' reading comprehension in an extensive reading context. A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control groups was used, involving 15 students in the experimental group and 23 in the control group at Merdeka University of Malang, Indonesia. The study assesses how BDA's structured phases (pre-, during-, post-reading) address common reading barriers such as idea identification, vocabulary deficits, and text structure analysis. The experimental group, which utilized the BDA strategy over 8 weeks, showed significant improvement in reading proficiency, with a mean post-test score increase of 22.3% compared to the control group's 15.2%. Statistical analysis confirmed the effectiveness of BDA (p<0.001). Qualitative data from student journals revealed that BDA activities such as vocabulary activation, predictive engagement, and visual literacy significantly aided comprehension. These findings underscore the value of BDA in overcoming specific EFL challenges, making it a practical tool for enhancing reading achievement in diverse educational settings. This implies that educators and curriculum developers should consider incorporating BDA-based strategies into EFL reading programs to support more effective and learner-centered literacy instruction.
