Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of the study of teaching materials in universities on religious intolerance and pluralism. The study also explores the Islamic perspective on these two dimensions. The location of the research was carried out at the IAIN Parepare of South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The source of research data is secondary data obtained from document review of teaching materials in the Aqidah Akhlak (moral theology) course as well as literature relevant to the research topic. The literature study research methodology guided by content analysis focuses on three topics, namely teaching materials, religious intolerance, and pluralism in the view of Islam. The study revealed two findings. First, the results of a study of the components or the appropriateness of the contents of the items of teaching materials in accordance with the values of tolerance as contained in Pancasila and Bhineka Tunggal Ika. Thus, these teaching materials contribute to preventing religious intolerance and provide a new perspective on pluralism. Second, in the view of Islam, it is known that religious intolerance can be avoided by tasamuh, namely by instilling a commendable moral attitude. While pluralism there are two opposing schools between those who accept and reject. In the Qur'an, there is an explanation of pluralism as a necessity, human diversity in togetherness. The conclusion is that the study of teaching materials contributes to supporting tasamuh behavior and avoiding negative views about pluralism. Pluralism is not recommended, namely religious pluralism which is feared to have a negative impact on aqidah. With the study of teaching materials, negative possibilities can be minimized as long as they are in accordance with practice. Because after all, the values of pluralism are also able to foster mutual respect and appreciation between fellow human beings so that they can support the development of student morality. The expected implication is that universities must supervise and provide input on teaching materials that have the potential for the concepts of tolerance and pluralism. The government needs to support the socialization of the true importance of tolerance and pluralism in the campus environment.

Abstract

Teacher talk must be specific, clear, concise, and comprehensible for students as the target interlocutors. This study aimed to characterize lexical density in teacher talks of elementary school teachers and university lecturers during teaching. A qualitative descriptive technique was used involving lexico-grammar analysis from an SFL perspective. The subjects of this study were three elementary school teachers (6th-grade teachers) and three university lecturers (English lecturers) who were voluntarily recorded during their teaching time; once for each. Hence, the object of this study is the transcriptions of teacher talks from these six research subjects which were then analyzed using documentation techniques of data analysis namely selection, categorization, classification, identification, and verification. The results show that the lexical density used in elementary school teacher talk is 42.65% (low) and that one employed at the university level is 36.76% (low). Unexpectedly, the rate for elementary school is somewhat higher than that for the university level. This case appears to have an intervening aspect because the elementary school is an international school. It is learned that an educational institution—regardless of its level—with a distinct learning target would certainly influence the lexical density employed in the teachers’ spoken discourse during classes.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the visual values—regarding interactive meaning—contained in the “My Next Words” English textbook and used at an international primary school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia using Kress and Van Leuween’s (2006) visual complementarity—only focusing on interactive meaning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were qualitative in the form of pictures in the textbook. The data were collected through a documentation procedure. From the findings, the interactive meaning found is as follows. primarily it uses long shots for most of the distance; second, it exclusively uses oblique views; and third, it shows both background-free and background-filled photographs. This outcome suggests that the pictures presented in this book are appropriate for the target audience, which is youngsters. For children to understand the concepts and messages presented in the textbook, their vision needs to be more distinct and clear. It is recommended that to produce more thorough and complex conclusions, future research should subcategorize the age in greater detail.

Abstract

The article was to determine the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning in distance learning system. The method used qualitative research with a field study design. Collecting data through observation and interview. This research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar with twenty English teachers. The results showed that the HOTS-based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning within a distance learning system was carried out effectively by the English teachers. However, there were several challenges encountered during implementation, including technological limitations. Distance learning requires a stable internet connection and adequate devices, but not all students have good access to the internet, which can hinder teachers in effectively conducting speaking and reading assessments. Additionally, not all students have sufficient audio or video devices to participate in speaking assessments, which can hinder their ability to practice speaking clearly and listen well. Furthermore, there were challenges in providing direct and individual feedback in distance learning. In speaking assessments, timely and direct feedback is crucial for students to correct mistakes and improve their speaking skills. However, in distance learning, feedback was often given in written form or through recorded videos, which can result in delays and limit students' opportunities for improvement. Abstract

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart-related conditions, such as stroke and heart attack. Dietary management is essential for regulating blood pressure, and foods high in potassium, like chayote (Sechium edule, Latin) (labu siam, Indonesian), are becoming recognized for their possible antihypertensive benefits. This research examines the effects of eating chayote on the control of blood pressure in people with hypertension. An experimental approach was employed, involving three participants with hypertension and a history of stroke. The participants ate chayote combined with oats as a substitute for rice every day for a week. Blood pressure readings were taken prior to and following the intervention to evaluate alterations in systolic and diastolic values. The results indicate a notable decrease in blood pressure. Typically, systolic pressure dropped by 15 mmHg (9.4%), whereas diastolic pressure fell by 10 mmHg (10.5%). These findings indicate that chayote aids in blood pressure control due to its elevated potassium levels, promoting sodium elimination and supporting electrolyte equilibrium. Moreover, its fiber and flavonoids promote heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and minimizing oxidative stress. Although the outcomes are favorable, this research is constrained by its limited sample size and brief duration. Future studies should include larger and more varied populations, longer intervention durations, and an examination of chayote’s bioactive compounds to gain a clearer understanding of its long-term impact on blood pressure control.
