Abstract

This study uniquely explores the disparities in pragmatic marker comprehension and production between bilingual and monolingual groups, aiming to elucidate the cognitive advantages associated with bilingualism. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporated standardized linguistic assessments and observational analyses to evaluate 200 participants, equally divided between bilinguals and monolinguals, ensuring demographic balance. The results indicate that bilingual individuals significantly outperform monolinguals in both comprehension and production of pragmatic markers. Specifically, bilingual participants scored higher on average in both the comprehension test (M = 85.6, SD = 5.3) and the production test (M = 82.4, SD = 5.1), compared to monolinguals who scored an average of 74.2 (SD = 6.8) and 70.3 (SD = 6.4) respectively. Independent samples t-tests confirmed these differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Further, these performance advantages persisted even after adjusting for age, gender, and education level, demonstrating the robustness of the bilingual advantage. Qualitative observational analyses supported these quantitative findings, revealing that bilingual participants used pragmatic markers with greater nuance and contextual appropriateness. Thematic analysis highlighted their higher metalinguistic awareness and cognitive flexibility, enabling them to navigate complex pragmatic contexts more effectively. Factors such as language exposure, age of acquisition, socioeconomic status, motivation, and language complexity were identified as influential in these outcomes. These findings advocate for the integration of bilingual education programs to enhance cognitive and linguistic capabilities, essential for effective communication in a globalized context.

Abstract

The article was to determine the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning in distance learning system. The method used qualitative research with a field study design. Collecting data through observation and interview. This research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar with twenty English teachers. The results showed that the HOTS-based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning within a distance learning system was carried out effectively by the English teachers. However, there were several challenges encountered during implementation, including technological limitations. Distance learning requires a stable internet connection and adequate devices, but not all students have good access to the internet, which can hinder teachers in effectively conducting speaking and reading assessments. Additionally, not all students have sufficient audio or video devices to participate in speaking assessments, which can hinder their ability to practice speaking clearly and listen well. Furthermore, there were challenges in providing direct and individual feedback in distance learning. In speaking assessments, timely and direct feedback is crucial for students to correct mistakes and improve their speaking skills. However, in distance learning, feedback was often given in written form or through recorded videos, which can result in delays and limit students' opportunities for improvement. Abstract

Exploring the cultural pragmatic speech of the Makassar people of various ages and genders is a popular trend in current pragmatic research. However, most of the previous studies have only obtained data from speakers of different genders and ages and have not addressed the cultural influences that influence them. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to fill in the gaps of previous research by showing that the dominant culture greatly influences verbal actions in response to praise from people living in Makassar, children, adolescents and adults. Three instruments are used in this descriptive research: observations, surveys and interviews with 15 adults, 15 youth and 15 children. The results show that Makassar culture influences the proportion of compliments used by Makassar people. 87% of female responses received praise in adulthood, 13% avoid praise, and 82% of female responses receive praise and 18% avoid praise in adolescence. In adulthood, 60% of their responses are praise, 40% avoid praise, 80% of men respond to praise, 20% reject praise, and 100% of boys accept praise.

Abstract

This research discusses language change as a result of the influence of social media. In an increasingly advanced digital era, social media has become one of the primary communication tools for individuals worldwide. This study utilizes descriptive and comparative analysis methods to explore the influence of social media on language change. Firstly, the research identifies grammar, syntax, and vocabulary changes due to social media usage. Then, the study compares the language used in traditional communication with that used in social media communication. The findings of this research indicate significant language changes due to the use of social media. There is an increase in the use of abbreviations, emoticons, and distinctive terms specific to social media that affect the way humans communicate in a digital context. Additionally, casual writing styles, non-formal language use, and the adaptation of foreign words have become characteristics of social media communication. These language changes can have both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, social media has enabled faster and more efficient communication between individuals across the globe. Using a more casual and non-formal language can also strengthen social bonds among social media users. However, on the other hand, these language changes can also pose challenges to understanding and communication between different generations or in formal contexts.

Abstract

In human development, it is often characterized as a developmental milestone where new behaviors emerge and are increasingly complex as the stages of development appear in this modern era. Development does notoccur at a constant pace. A relatively fast growth (spurt) can be interspersed with slow growth (plateau). Some scholars use such uneven patterns of growth and change as evidence of qualitatively different periods of development. From the results of the study found 3 factors that have the potential to affect the development of each child's reasoning, namely; Hereditary factors (heredity), environmental factors, heredity and environmental factors that interact to form behavior. The characteristics inherited by each child have a sensitive period, namely when children are active and motivated learners and when children construct their knowledge based on experience. In implanting physical and cognitive devices there is thought and language becoming increasingly interdependent; As thought and language begin to fuse, children often talk to themselves which is known as self-talk. Self-talk has an important function in cognitive development: By talking to themselves, children learn to guide and direct their own behavior in the process of performing difficult tasks and performing complex maneuvers_just as adults guide them.
