Abstract

This study delves into integrating technology, visual literacy, and curriculum development within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in advertising education. By exploring innovative approaches to ESP instruction, the research aims to address the evolving needs of learners and the advertising industry. Through a comprehensive literature review and analysis of previous research, the study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating technology and visual literacy into ESP advertising curriculum. This study used a descriptive approach, which systematically identified and selected relevant literature from academic databases, scholarly journals, books, and other reputable sources. Keywords related to each area of focus were used to conduct comprehensive searches. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to ensure the selected literature aligns with the research objectives. Findings indicated that the integration of technology and visual literacy into ESP advertising curriculum enhances learner engagement, creativity, and proficiency in creating advertising materials. Additionally, curriculum development strategies such as needs analysis, stakeholder collaboration, and continuous evaluation contribute to the relevance and effectiveness of ESP instruction. The findings of this study have significant implications for ESP educators, curriculum developers, and advertising professionals. By integrating technology, visual literacy, and curriculum development strategies into ESP advertising education, educators can better prepare learners for success in the dynamic and competitive advertising industry. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of ongoing collaboration between academia and industry to ensure the continued relevance and effectiveness of ESP instruction in meeting the evolving needs of learners and the advertising industry.

Abstract

The study aimed to explore students' perspectives on learning English for accounting and assess the effectiveness of current instructional methods, focusing on the potential benefits of using flashcards as a pedagogical tool. The research involved 20 accounting students from Universitas Sulawesi Barat (Unsulbar), who participated in surveys and semi-structured interviews. Data collection focused on students’ perceptions of the importance and difficulty of English for accounting, the effectiveness of current teaching methods, and their opinions on using flashcards. The study found that accounting students perceive English as crucial yet challenging due to the complexity of specialized terminology. Current teaching methods were deemed insufficient in addressing these challenges, leading to a general agreement on the potential benefits of flashcards. The results indicate that flashcards significantly improve students’ motivation and retention of accounting terms by providing interactive and visually engaging learning opportunities. The research highlights that incorporating flashcards into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) can address the unique needs of non-English major students and enhance their understanding of field-specific vocabulary. This study contributes to the field of educational research by demonstrating the practical application of flashcards in specialized vocabulary learning and offering insights into effective instructional strategies for non-English major students. The findings suggest that future research should further explore diverse flashcard designs and long-term impacts on language proficiency.

Abstract

In today’s globalized creative industries, English proficiency is not merely a supportive skill but a core component of professional literacy, especially in advertising. However, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction often fails to reflect the communicative realities of design students, leading to a disconnect between language learning and domain-specific needs. This study explores how advertising students at Politeknik Negeri Media Kreatif engage with English when crafting brand messages in visual campaigns. The aim is to identify the linguistic challenges they face and the pedagogical adjustments needed in ESP instruction. Employing a qualitative research design, this study involved 15 advertising students as participants. Data were collected through document analysis of student-produced advertising materials, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Thematic analysis revealed five core findings: (1) English use was shaped more by intuitive creativity than formal instruction; (2) students showed resourcefulness in digital-assisted writing but struggled with genre-specific tone and idiomatic accuracy; (3) multimodal synergy between text and visuals was enhanced by linguistic confidence; (4) collaborative language support was seen as lacking; and (5) students called for more context-specific ESP learning experiences. The study contributes to ESP and design education by proposing a reimagined ESP curriculum that includes task-based, genre-driven, and collaborative approaches tailored to creative disciplines. Findings suggest that integrating language instruction with design practice enhances students' communicative competence and their ability to produce globally resonant advertising content. This research supports a shift from generalized English training toward a more embedded, practice-oriented ESP pedagogy in design education.

Employing a qualitative case study design, the research engaged a diverse group of educators and curriculum designers, facilitating in-depth discussions on their experiences and perceptions regarding curriculum flexibility and technology use in language teaching. The findings reveal a strong consensus among participants on the essential role of technology and adaptable curricula in promoting student engagement and communicative competence. Respondents highlighted technology's significance in fostering interactive learning environments, while emphasizing the necessity of flexible curricula to cater to diverse learner needs. This dual focus on technological and curricular adaptability indicates a vital shift toward more inclusive and responsive educational practices. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the existing literature by providing insights into the collective impact of curriculum flexibility, pedagogical innovation, and technology integration on English language learning outcomes. Additionally, it offers practical recommendations for educators and policymakers to develop curricula that are not only technologically inclusive but also aligned with the dynamic demands of 21st-century learners. By addressing the complexities of language education in a digital context, this research underscores the importance of a cohesive approach to curriculum and instruction, paving the way for future investigations into effective language teaching practices across various educational settings.
