Abstract

This study identifies and compares the translation procedures used by Google Translate, U- Dictionary, and Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) in translating metaphors found in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, namely Hop Frog, A Descent into The Maelstrom and The Fall of the House of Usher. The most common procedure used by all three translation tools is reproducing the same essence in the target language. Google Translate is the most varied in its approach, while Kamus Inggris frequently deletes metaphors. The study highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each tool in handling metaphor translation. Out of 40 metaphors, Google translate used the procedure for 21 times, U-Dictionary used it for 19 times, and Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) used it for 20 times. Lastly, translating metaphor as simile along with its sense is not used by the three machine translations.

Abstract

In the context of the 2024 presidential election campaign, the proliferation of memes as a medium of public and supporter expression has become increasingly prominent. Memes serve as a vehicle for political commentary, often reflecting public sentiment and opinion. However, a significant concern arises from the pervasive use of linguistic impoliteness within these memes. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of linguistic impoliteness in memes related to the 2024 presidential election. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method, data were collected from a variety of meme images sourced from the internet. The analysis reveals that linguistic impoliteness in these memes manifests in several forms, including bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm, and the withholding of politeness. These forms of impoliteness not only reflect the aggressive nature of political discourse but also have the potential to incite conflict among different political factions. The findings suggest a need for more responsible meme usage, particularly in politically charged contexts, to foster a healthier and more constructive political dialogue. The study concludes that while memes are a powerful tool for political expression, their potential to exacerbate tensions should not be overlooked. Implications for future research include exploring strategies for mitigating the negative impact of impoliteness in online political communication.

Abstract

The community service program aims to provide public speaking training to strengthen the character of children aged 9-12 and develop their speaking skills in English while boosting their confidence. By giving them opportunities to speak in public, the program hopes to help them build strong self-confidence, particularly in using the English language. The method used in this community service program is participatory observation to identify the skills gap that needs to be addressed in the participants, which is expected to provide solutions for improving their abilities. Additionally, this training employs pre-tests and post-tests to assess improvements in English language skills and surveys to gather feedback from participants. The results of the activity demonstrate effectiveness in enhancing participants' communication and public speaking abilities, as well as improving their English language skills, as evidenced by the pre-test and post-test results.
