Abstract

Abstract

Conventional politeness theory assumes face-work occurs between interactants of comparable standing — an assumption that breaks down when one speaker holds institutional authority over the other. This study aims to examine how impoliteness functions as a resource for exercising such institutional power, using the 7 November 2018 White House press conference confrontation between then-President Donald Trump and CNN correspondent Jim Acosta as a single case. Verbal and nonverbal data were analysed using a qualitative sociopragmatic design pairing Culpeper’s impoliteness typology with Bourdieu’s, Foucault’s, and Fairclough’s perspectives on power; transcripts were cross-verified across eight media outlets as one dataset, with coding operating at the lingual unit nested within each speaker’s turn. The asymmetry was pronounced: impoliteness appeared in 80% of Trump’s coded utterances against 20% of Acosta’s, Trump’s concentrated in Bald On-Record and Positive Impoliteness, Acosta’s in Negative Impoliteness and Withhold Politeness. Power-relation coding showed the interaction dominated by Dominance (40%) and Hegemony (28%), with Resistance (24%) and Power Negotiation (8%) far less prominent. Rather than reading this as interactional breakdown, the study reframes impoliteness as a resource for asserting and converting institutional authority, extending Brown and Levinson’s fixed-cost assumption of face-threat by building structural power asymmetry into the model, and proposes a preliminary power-sensitive account of face-work.

Abstract

This study examines language commodification in the naming of culinary businesses in Sedayu City, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta Timur. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of linguistic landscape studies, this research analyzes 124 business naming units displayed on signboards, banners, and tenants, documented between January and March 2025. Data were classified into monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual forms, then interpreted through informational and symbolic functions. The results indicate that monolingual forms account for 64 data points (52%), bilingual forms for 55 (44%), and multilingual forms for 5 (4%). Indonesian remains the strongest informational anchor, while English, along with several regional and foreign languages, serves as a symbolic resource to construct modern, authentic, and exclusive brand identities. These findings suggest that language in this commercial space is no longer merely a tool for communication but has become a marketable resource used to influence consumer perception and increase exchange value. Functional analysis reveals that Indonesian dominates the informational function as a conveyor of factual messages, ensuring consumer comprehension. Conversely, in the symbolic function, the use of English and other foreign languages is leveraged to build a modern image, exclusivity, and brand appeal. Thus, the research findings demonstrate that such naming reflects a negotiation of local-global identities. Local identity is maintained as a root of authenticity, while global elements are adopted as a marketing strategy to enhance market value. Language in Sedayu City has undergone commodification, shifting its function from a mere communicative tool to an economic resource with commercial value within the dynamics of an urban commercial area.

Abstract

This study discusses Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis on stereotypes of the wife's role in the household in the religious speech given at a wedding event. The purpose of this religious speech is to provide understanding to married couples regarding their respective rights and responsibilities, as well as solve problems in the household, and also to prevent and reduce the number of divorce cases. There is a stereotype of women that is synonymous with femininity, namely in the form of the perception that women are attached, that women are gentle, beautiful, easily carried away by emotions, and full of affection. These perceptions of men and women provide cultural assumptions that give different and wider roles to men and make them obtain a relatively high social value status compared to women. In relation to marriage advice lectures, by looking at the stereotype phenomenon that occurs in women, the process and occurrence of marriage advice is one of the important processes and influences the development of these stereotypes. This study uses a qualitative method using the discourse analysis technique of Sara Mills. The primary data was obtained from a long process of repeatedly listening to the marriage advice video lectures to select scenes that display stereotypes towards women in the marriage advice video lectures. The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze critical discourse about the stereotyped role of the wife in marriage in marriage advice lectures.
