Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of Indonesian version of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), a measure self-compassion. Participants were 681 undergraduate students (17-22 years old) at the Faculty of Psychology University of Surabaya. The accidental sampling technique was used as a method of data collection by asking the participants' willingness to be involved in this study by filling in the research informed consent. The confirmatory factor analysis, composite reliability, and correlations were used to examine the factor structure, reliability, and criterion validity. The results found that the six-factor hierarchy model with self-compassion and self-criticism as the main dimensions are the best factor structures and have good internal consistency. The correlations between Indonesian version of the SCS with other measurements proved that Indonesian version of the SCS has a good criterion validity. The result suggests that Indonesian version of the SCS was a valid and reliable measurement tools to measure the self-compassion in Indonesian samples.

Abstract

The Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (COPE) scale is widely used for measuring coping strategies. However, concerns persist regarding the dimensions captured by the scale and the accuracy of item representation. This study examined the relevance of adapted Brief COPE items using discriminant content validity (DCV). A panel of experts (n = 15) assessed the extent to which the items corresponded to their intended dimensions. Intraclass correlation (ICC) estimates ranged from 0.640 to 0.828, indicating agreement among experts. A one-sample t-test evaluated DCV, revealing that 21 out of 28 items distinctly and exclusively measured intended dimensions, confirming their discriminant content validity. Seven items were excluded: three did not measure coping strategies (non-dimension), and four measured them in different dimensions (wrong-dimension). The discriminant content-validated Brief COPE scale improves coping assessment, benefiting psychological therapies and providing researchers with refined measures for each coping strategy dimension, addressing dimensional concerns.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on individuals, such as psychological distress characterized by depression and anxiety. This research aims to determine the risk and protective factors that affect the psychological distress of individuals in Asia. This study used a systematic literature review method based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-analysis). Articles were searched using specific keywords in the Google Scholar and Science Direct databases based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Search articles using the keywords “psychological distress”, AND “COVID-19”, AND “individual psychological distress”, “COVID-19 Asia” on Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of the synthesis of the 14 selected articles showed that there were risk factors and protective factors for psychological distress, which were grouped from sociodemographic factors, stress-related factors, internal factors, and external factors. Socio-demographic factors such as gender, age, marital status/ family status, and living in areas where the COVID-19 virus is spreading. Stress-related factors such as isolation, taking vitamins at home, and using social media to access negative news about the COVID-19 pandemic. Internal factors include congenital diseases and low self-efficacy. External factors include heavy workload, low income, lack of health protocols, less experienced in work, and just completed or graduated the education. The results of this study explain individual psychological distress, especially during a pandemic. Further research can conduct a meta-analysis to determine the effect size of risk and protective factors on psychological distress.
