Abstract

The presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely spread and used in many aspects of life, including education, as an image generator, source of data exploration, and means of visualization. Nevertheless, the research regarding the use of AI in the Architectural design studio process is still few, especially in the context of Indonesian Architectural education. Therefore, this research aims to picture the use of AI integrated Building Information Modelling in the design studio. This research was done by combining observation and a questionnaire. The use of AI in wind and thermal simulation of 5th-semester students with medium-rise building projects was studied. The students were being exposed to conventional simulation software, before being introduced to Autodesk Forma, an AI based cloud simulation. After the semester ends, students are asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding their process of doing simulation. The result is that most of the students find the AI-based simulation easy, regardless of the limitation of simulated areas and the maximum file size of the trial-free version. They still find more benefits of using the AI Simulation compared to conventional one, as they can reflect on their design and develop them according to the simulation results more effectively and holistically. Future studies regarding the use of AI in other design stages could be done as a follow-up to ensure the creativity of architectural design thinking.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country consisting of various tribes and cultures, one of which is the Osing Tribe in Banyuwangi, located at the eastern tip of Java Island, near Bali Island. The culture of the Osing tribe is manifested in the traditional Osing house architecture, especially in Kemiren Village, which is built from a combination of Osing's unique technology and art. From its position, the Banyuwangi area is located at the boundary of tectonic plates, which results in the potential for natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis. This research aims to study the structural design of the traditional Osing tribe house in responding to these disasters threat. The identification of the structural elements is then analyzed to determine how the building will transmit the axial and lateral load, as well as withstand disasters. The result is that the Osing tribe house has applied the local wisdom, manifested in the house’s tectonic design. The details of the building could respond and distribute the loads caused by disaster. Responding to the load from the volcanic ash, the Osing house’s roof needs reinforcement to sustain its rigidity.

Abstract

Historically, Indonesia's strategic location on international trade routes facilitated the development and growth of port cities throughout Indonesia. Historically, rivers were the city's main transportation route, leading to urban settlements along the river banks. Surabaya is one of the cities in Indonesia that relies on waterways as its main transportation route. However, population growth accompanied by the expansion of road transportation modes gradually reduced the role of the river as the main route. The shift has resulted in areas around the river becoming undeveloped and unmaintained. This research uses a space syntax approach to study the impact of the transportation shift in Surabaya from waterway to landline on the condition of facades along Jalan Kalimas Timur. The quantitative method descriptively uses data collected through literature study and field observation. The data obtained was then analysed using DepthMapX software. The results of this study show that the shift in transportation routes impacts the maintenance of facades along Kalimas Timur Street, which tends to be less maintained, making the area that was once the centre of the city now a neglected and damaged area.

Abstract

Karet street corridor is one of the historical street corridors in Surabaya that picture the blend character of Colonial and Chinese architecture. These unique characteristics started to decrease and even vanish in some buildings in the street, through the development of Surabaya. This research aims to map the existing condition of the facade and outlining possible conservation strategies by using field observation with qualitative analysis. All the sixty two buildings alongside the street corridor will be grouped into four condition levels: excellent, good, fair, and poor that were based on integrity of the facade, the suitability of materials, and the quality of surface finishes. The result showed that in areas with low activity, the damage is more commonly found than one in busy commercial zones. It also revealed that a combination of deterioration pattern and user behaviour affect the conservation strategies that could be applied in these buildings. This study recommends a zoning-based conservation in response to the deterioration of the facade, including full restoration, maintenance for good and fair condition, and preventive action for well preserved buildings. Overall, this research recommends preservation alternatives to maintain the authenticity and cultural significance of Karet street for years to come.

Abstract

Abstract

Colonial buildings in Surabaya are an important part of the city's architectural heritage, representing its visual identity and the result of acculturation between European and Indonesian cultures. This study aims to examine the composition of facades as elements that shape the visual character of colonial buildings in the Jembatan Merah area. The study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a case study method, involving field observations, visual documentation, and analysis based on D.K. Ching's theory of visual composition and Hamid Shirvani's theory of visual character of the environment. Four colonial buildings were selected as objects of study: Singa Building, PTPN X Building, Maybank Building, and NILLMIJ Building. The results of the study show that the four buildings share common principles in terms of geometry, symmetry, scale, and façade rhythm, which create visual cohesion in the urban landscape. The proportion of openings ranging from 25–40% reflects the design adaptation to the tropical climate through the optimisation of natural ventilation, while the dominant proportion of massive surfaces reinforces the monumental impression characteristic of colonial architecture. Façade elements such as prominent main doors, limasan roofs, and decorative ornaments play an important role in shaping the visual identity of the buildings. These findings confirm that façade composition is an integral part of the visual heritage that must be preserved in efforts to conserve and revitalise historic areas. Understanding this visual composition structure is expected to serve as a reference in contextual design planning that is sensitive to the city's historical values.
