Abstract

The learning of a foreign language cannot be separated from an understanding of the structure and characteristics of that language, especially in terms of understanding grammar. This research aims to analyze the syntactic and semantic differences between the Indonesian word sering and the Mandarin word经常jingchang. The research method used in this writing is a qualitative method involving an analysis of two linguistic corpora, namely the Indonesian corpus and the Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU corpus. Based on the corpus data analysis, the results are as follows: 1. Sentence patterns and relationships between sentences in the Indonesian word sering can be used in declarative and interrogative sentence patterns; In sentence position, sering can be used in the middle of a sentence with the condition of use after verbs/adjectives that function as predicates. In informal usage, it can also be used at the beginning of a sentence, but not at the end of a sentence. In terms of synonym usage, the word sering can be used with action verbs, desires, existence, commands, decisions, and with adjectives indicating attitudes and feelings, but cannot be paired with adjectives indicating distance, form, and taste. 2. In terms of meaning, both the Indonesian word sering and the Mandarin word经常jingchang have the meaning of frequency and high intensity. AbstrakPembelajaran bahasa asing tidak dapat terlepas dari pemahaman akan struktur dan kekhasan bahasa tersebut, terutama dalam hal pemahaman akan tata bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis perbedaan sintaksis dan semantik kata bahasa Indonesia sering dan bahasa Mandarin经常jingchang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penulisan ini adalah metode kualitatif berupa analisis terhadap dua korpus linguistik, yakni korpus Indonesia dan Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU. Berdasarkan pada analisis data korpus, didapatkan hasil: 1. Pola kalimat dan hubungan antarkalimat pada kata bahasa Indonesia sering dapat digunakan pada pola kalimat deklaratif dan interogatif; Pada posisi kalimat, sering dapat digunakan pada tengah kalimat dengan syarat penggunaan setelah kata kerja/sifat yang berupa predikat, pada penggunaan informal, bisa juga digunakan pada awal kalimat, tetapi tidak dapat digunakan pada akhir kalimat; pada penggunaan padanan kata, kata sering dapat digunakan dengan kata kerja penanda tindakan, keinginan, keberadaan, memerintah, dan memutuskan, serta pada kata sifat penunjuk sikap dan perasaan, namun tidak dapat dipadankan dengan kata sifat penunjuk jarak, bentuk dan rasa. 2. Dalam segi makna, bahasa Indonesia sering' dan bahasa Mandarin经常jingchang keduanya memiliki makna berulang dan intensitas tinggi.

Abstract

The use of a parallel corpus for Chinese and English adverbs is still rarely explored, especially when comparing the Chinese adverb feichang with its English equivalents. ‘Feichang’ literally means "very", but English has various other words to convey the same words. The aim of this study is to compare the grammatical structure and semantic meaning of the Chinese adverb ‘feichang’ with its English equivalents using Chinese-English parallel corpus. To obtain the data, we used 50 sentences that contain the word ‘feichang’ in Chinese and English from the PKU parallel corpus. All sentences are related to the computer field. These sentences were then analyzed using AntConc, a concordance tool, to examine the grammatical structure and semantic aspects of the phrases. The findings showed that in Chinese, the adverb ‘feichang’ occurs in adjective and verb phrases. Meanwhile, in the English corpus, these phrases are rendered differently in five types of phrases: adjective, noun, verb, prepositional, and adverbial. Moreover, the word ‘feichang’ itself is rendered in a different lexicon, even though the meaning is the same. The results implied that one language can offer more varieties in expressing similar ideas, and parallel corpus can be a good source for analyzing these differences.

Abstract

The research showed that online media was expected to provide a more straightforward understanding to students in learning Mandarin, one of which was FlipGrid online learning media. Learning Mandarin was quite challenging if it was only done by using textbooks. This could be shown by the lack of students’ memory of the vocabulary they had just learned. The data were analyzed with a quantitative approach involving 110 students aged 13 to 14. The data was collected of students’ vocabulary study after two months of using three test questions: filling in the blanks, guessing the meaning, and completing sentences. Thus, it can be concluded that understanding the vocabulary learned on the FlipGrid platform media can also be an additional vocabulary for students in developing speaking skills. The results reveal that the teacher’s participation in monitoring the completion of students’ assignments also plays a vital role in developing students’ speaking skills, which means that the frequency of using FlipGrid directly impacts students’ memory skills. However, when faced with critical thinking test questions, students themselves must be able to think out of the box and not only based on what they have learned from FlipGrid online. That means the research implies a need for a more innovative instructional design for language learning to improve better students’ memorization to learn Mandarin.

Abstract

The research explored whether digital comic books were a new learning method that could increase learning motivation in learning Mandarin. Illustrated learning media made it easier for students to understand learning material. Along with the times and technological advances, learning methods had also developed in various ways. The questions in the research were: (1) How was the application of e-comic in learning Mandarin?; (2) What did students think about learning with e-comic? The research applied a qualitative method, and 40 students who studied Mandarin were the respondents. Based on the results, it can be concluded that all respondents agree that applying learning media using digital comic books can provide positive results in learning Mandarin. All respondents think learning through e-comic makes it easier to understand grammatical material and helps compose sentences to construct conversations. Learning with comic book media is considered very interesting. Even though the learning process using comic book media occurs online during the pandemic, learning with comic book media can create interactive learning. Students can become more creative and able to use various applications to make their own comics with the characters they choose. Learning with comic books can motivate students to learn Mandarin.

Abstract

Mandarin language learning differs from other languages due to the chinese character and the use of translation apps. The study aims to compare the accuracy of translations between Google Translate and Baidu Translate, using a sample of 100 words from 10 respondents. The results show that the translations are similar, but the pronunciation differs. The study also found that the linguistic and contextual elements used in translation processes can provide a better understanding of the components that influence translation accuracy. This knowledge can help improve translation applications and enhance users' experiences in various situations. The findings can help improve the effectiveness of translation apps in various situations. AbstrakPembelajaran Bahasa Mandarin berbeda dari bahasa lain karena adanya aksara Mandarin dan penggunaan aplikasi terjemahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan keakuratan terjemahan antara Google Translate dan Baidu Translate, dengan menggunakan sampel sebanyak 100 kata dari 10 responden. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa terjemahannya serupa, namun terdapat perbedaan dalam hal keakuratan pengucapannya. Kajian tersebut juga menemukan bahwa unsur linguistik dan kontekstual yang digunakan dalam proses penerjemahan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih baik mengenai komponen-komponen yang memengaruhi keakuratan penerjemahan. Penelitian ini dapat membantu meningkatkan aplikasi terjemahan dan meningkatkan pengalaman pengguna dalam berbagai konteks situasi serta dapat membantu meningkatkan efektivitas aplikasi terjemahan dalam berbagai situasi.
