Abstract

A dictum initiated by the Palo Alto group literally reads 'one cannot not communicate' allows us to examine the existence of the communication study. The biographical approach used by Rogers leads us to understand the emergence of the study pioneered by Darwin, Freud and Marx followed by the current development in the US. Nevertheless, by tracing the humanistic origins of the rhetoric tradition, there has been an unchained history between the rhetoric tradition and the print age of communication. This essay analyses the existence of the communication study through the history-biographical approach and the related researches.

Abstract

(Press Between Two Neighbouring Countries) Cultural differences between the Indonesian and Australian media sometimes create complaints and tensions. While the Australian media are generally regarded as being aggressive, fond of conflict, eager to get to the core of issues quickly and playing "supervisory" role, the Indonesian media are portrayed as being government's microphone and leaving the fact and the truth. The problem to be discussed centre on how the various views of the neighbouring countries' press emerge. By brushing aside the reasons to rationalise and the existed opinions, this paper shows that both the Indonesian and Australian press have implemented a good professional standard of journalism.

Abstract

Three years since its first appearance at the end of 2019, until now, Covid-19 still exists. Realizing that the handling of Covid-19 cannot be carried out alone, the Indonesian government is trying to involve various parties to provide the public with an understanding of the risks. Considering that Covid-19 is still around, efforts to reflect on the risk communication system and the various risk policies adopted are necessary as a preventive action to anticipate various potential risks and health crises in the future. This research is qualitative with a case study type. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with the Covid-19 handling committee in Indonesia (KPC PEN), observation, and literature study. The results of this study indicate that in building a risk communication system, the government cooperates with various parties. The communication system and risk policies implemented by the Indonesian government are not optimal in understanding risks to the public. Efforts are needed to conduct regular evaluations and monitoring to optimize communication systems and risk policies in anticipation of future health crises.

Abstract

Digital transformation has many implications for society, not only positive, but also negative. Various crimes in the cyber world, including hoaxes and infodemics, are something that cannot be avoided. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of hoax and infodemic news made the handling of Covid-19 in Indonesia more complex. Many people are victims of hoaxes which in the end take action against government policies related to Covid-19, such as reluctance to comply with health protocols and rejection of vaccination programs. This research contributes to studying the challenges of digital transformation in Indonesia, especially during the past Covid-19 pandemic. The research method used in this paper is a case study. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews from Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, literature studies, both from books, journals and scientific articles. The results of this study indicate that digital transformation has encouraged the growth of hoaxes and infodemics which have hampered efforts to deal with Covid-19.
