Abstract

UKM Sumber Berkat Mandiri is a shop that sells approximately 350 types of livestock equipment, modern agriculture, and techniques. Sumber Berkat Mandiri serves buyers directly or through marketplaces. The number of items are quite many and it makes the owners to manage their stocks. Moreover, the owners are still using the “stall management system”, Almost all the affairs are done individually and are not recorded neatly. Therefore, the owner often experiences over-stock or the opposite, shortage of stock. In last year's community service activity, the team introduced an inventory management application. However, it turned out that the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) is still having difficulty using the application. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide help in operating the inventory management application and prepare work guides for the partner, Sumber Berkat Mandiri SME, so that they can use the inventory management application. With assistance in the use of inventory management applications, the partner can have the skills and expertise in using applications in recording quantities and controlling inventory of their merchandise, as well as making inventory management more effective and efficient.

Abstract

Given the importance of correspondence in every organization, the ability to produce good and correct letters requires certain skills. Therefore, training on writing business letters and correspondence is urgently needed for many organizations, Himpunan Penyelenggaran Pelatihan dan Kursus Indonesia (HIPKI) and Himpunan Lembaga Pelatihan Seluruh Indonesia (HILLSI) which are our partners. The Vocational Faculty Abdimas Team, specifically from Diploma of Office Administration Study Program, Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University conducted community service activities in the form of correspondence training, in terms of the parts of the letter and the language of the letter, for HIPKI and HILLSI members. After conducting online training using Zoom Meeting, the participants showed an increased understanding of letter writing, in terms of the parts of the letter and the language of the letter. This is indicated by an increase in the participants' average scores from 30 in the pre-test to 71.67 in the post-test. Participants hope that this training can be continued with advanced training, especially in deepening the material in making effective sentences in the contents of letters.

Abstract

This literature review paper explores the realm of constructivism within educational environments, specifically focusing on the use of instructional technology in English Language Teaching (ELT) for higher education. The scope of instructional technology in this paper is any kinds of technological support designed to accommodate various learning opportunities for learners by providing multiple tools or means of engagement, representation, and expression in ELT. Meanwhile, Constructivism, a prominent learning approach having been used widely in educational realm, underscores learners' active participation in constructing their own knowledge through experiences and interactions with their surroundings. Constructivism emphasizes the importance of authentic tasks and meaningful contexts in fostering knowledge transfer. The roots of constructivism trace back to Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, highlighting the role of social interactions and tools in cognitive development. The paper aims to examine how instructional technology can facilitate constructivist principles in ELT, examining global trends, knowledge acquisition, and the interplay between technology and constructivist pedagogy. The paper makes use of literature review for the methodology, based on a systematic review approach to gather and analyze relevant scholarly articles, books, reports, and conference papers concerning how instructional technology is used to employ constructivism in English Language Teaching (ELT), in higher education settings. The review also dives into practical implications and recommendations for leveraging instructional technology as scaffolding for language learners to navigate their Zone of Proximal Development effectively. Eventually, the integration of instructional technology within constructivist pedagogy presents rooms for establishing dynamic and interactive learning environments. However, thoughtful attention must be given to teaching and learning strategies, teacher support, and effective synergy of technology to obtain its full potential in enhancing student learning.

Abstract

Reading and listening as receptive skills have been investigated from multiple angles. The current research is a descriptive study aiming to find the correlation between the two receptive skills. In addition, it investigates the strengths and weaknesses in terms of four subskills (finding the main idea, answering stated-detail questions, answering implied-detail questions, and identifying the meaning of the expressions used in an oral or written discourse) performed by the respondents who were grouped as the high achievers and the low achievers. The research findings confirmed a significantly positive correlation between reading and listening skills. In the listening test, the high achievers had strengths in all of the subskills, whereas the low achievers’ performance in all the subskills was below 50%, which implied that they had weaknesses in all of the listening subskills. In the reading test, the high achievers had strengths in all subskills. The low achievers showed strong reading performance in the subskills of finding main ideas and answering stated-detail questions. At the same time, they had weaknesses in the subskills of answering implied-detail questions and identifying the meaning of the expressions used in the written discourse. This result implies that vocabulary is the most important factor to upgrade to anticipate the weakness in the subskills of answering implied-detail questions and identifying the meaning of the expressions used in the written discourse.

Abstract

Speaking is still often considered one of the most daunting skills for English language learners. For Asian learners, such as Indonesian, it is quite common for them to experience psychological-related challenges whenever they are presented with speaking tasks. The aims of this research aims to analyze the psychological challenges of students in vocational education at the higher education level. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Respondents in this study are 36 students. The data in this study were sourced from the experiences of the respondents which were recorded in their guided reflection and semi-structured interviews. The data from the reflection results were analyzed using three coding steps: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. This study found that most participants reported negative feelings around speaking tasks, such as being nervous, afraid (of making mistakes), fear of failure, insecure, tense, anxious, and doubtful, faster heartbeats and trembling which mostly stemmed from afraid to failing to meet expectations, lack of preparation, and lack of adequate language competence. Suggestions for a better-speaking class are discussed.

Abstract

Understanding the power dynamics among English as a Foreign Language (EFL), English as a Second Language (ESL), and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) is critical to navigate balanced English language education framework and policies which in turns would equalize global communication needs and local cultures preservation. This paper explains how the metaphorical perspective works in the context of EFL, ESL and ELF power dynamics and how these powers relate to one another, creating a power dynamics equilibrium and influencing greatly the global Englishes. Using a conceptual paper design in nature, the paper employs a metaphorical perspective of Newtonian System as opposing forces balancing each other to analyze the power dynamics of EFL, ESL and ELF. The Newtonian System metaphor provides an appropriate framework to describe the power equilibrium in the dynamics. On one side, factors like socioeconomic influences, demographic shifts, language policy, act metaphorically as forces pushing the spread of English across diverse contexts. Countries with strong economic ties to English-speaking nations tend to adopt ESL or EFL, driven by necessity (metaphorical representation of Newton’s first law of inertia). Simultaneously, the standard English paradigm acts as a force of conformity, reinforcing global norms and expectations around English usage, much like a gravitational pull, shaping the trajectories of EFL and ESL toward a fixed center of linguistic authority (metaphorical representation of Newton’s second law). On the opposite side, resistance arises from localized cultures, native languages, and distinct educational policies that push back, creating a dynamic balance similar to Newton’s third law of action and reaction. Future research can study extended contexts such as digital communication or postcolonial settings, to explore how local resistance adapts to globalization. Another possible further research are empirical investigations to recommend policy-making and teaching strategies that respect linguistic diversity while fostering global connectivity

Abstract

The present study investigates the relationship between students’ English language proficiency and their logical reasoning reflected by their performance in applying spreadsheet program. Since logical thinking is the basis of both using English language for communication and operating Microsoft Excel program, students can very likely show similar success in their performance while learning these two skills. The subjects were 67 students enrolled at a secretarial college in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data were collected from the students scores of TOEIC international test and Computer II course focusing on Microsoft Excel. Means of the scores were calculated and the sets of data were analyzed to see if there was a significant correlation between them. The results showed that the students’ English proficiency correlated significantly with their academic performance in computer. It can then be concluded that students with better logical thinking ability seem to be more successful in learning English as a foreign language.
