Abstract

Dealing with writing, there are two major problems for the students in English courses. The first is in finding ‘what to write’ (generating ideas about a specific topic) and the second is how to develop the idea that has been invented. Developing the ideas includes using the appropriate grammar and sentence structure in each paragraph and also developing paragraphs to form a composition. The paper overviews how scaffolding technique is able to help students in English classes to learn writing. Scaffolding is regarded as suitable for teaching writing because of the approach used in the technique focuses more to the approach rather than to the product. A general description and overview of how students are supported by scaffolding technique in generating ideas related to a particular topic and producing an appropriate text organization, is presented here.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate how Modeling and Peer Reviewing as types of scaffoldings in learning, practical expansion of Constructivism approach could assist the EFL (English as Foreign language) learners to improve their writing skill in English Business Correspondence class. As a derivation of Constructivism approach, Modeling and Peer Reviewing, two types of scaffolding in learning (which may employ various teaching methods) tend to put more weight on the social factors of Language Teaching instead of in quest for ‘the best method’. The research methodology used was Classroom Action Research, which utilized the cycles of Action Research: Planning-Acting-Reflecting-Revising the Plan. The data collection was conducted by interviewing, taking learning activity log (field note), and giving Pre-test and Post-test to the student-participants. All these data were analyzed and decoded to see patterns and tendency. The result described that the two scaffolding tools: Modeling and Peer Reviewing were able to give impact to the improvement of students’ English Business Correspondence skills. Modeling and Peer Reviewing generally improved the students’ writing quality and improve their scores. The Modeling action gave initial pictures on the message structure of the business letters, commonly used phrases, writing styles, vocabulary, content/ ideas for writing, grammar and sentence structure. The Peer Reviewing action contributed feedback on the students’ work. The feedback could be upon: grammar and structure, message structure, writing style, diction and set phrases. The recommendation based on the research is that the teachers/lecturers/instructors are to give initial instruction and some explanation regarding the framework or basic concept before applying the Modeling and Peer Reviewing in the classroom. The application of Modeling and Peer Reviewing should also consider: students’ readiness and students’ maturity.

Abstract

An approach to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teaching and learning, Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been subjects for studies. The approach has worked well and has brought the learners forward from the previous stage. The language learning outcomes in CLIL are usually made contextual, functional and communicative. In this study, the students regarded CLIL as relevant and to deliver the English language teaching in the context of their field. On the other hand, the General Language has provided support up to the extent of explaining the language grammatical points (using the terms such as complex, compound, subject, predicate, objects). Then, authentic learning materials are regarded as being relevant to their interest and the subject matter. The CLIL approach are recommended to be applied under constant observation and evaluation since the ESP world is various and multi-context. This approach is supposed to be adjusted with the local environment, students’ interest, according to the standard ESP need analysis to arrange the lesson plan. Further research on how CLIL is able to influence the students’ language mastery in a specific field is subject to be systematically conducted.

Abstract

Language teaching and education have been so long influenced by developmental psychology, namely constructivism. This idea enlightens the world of language teaching. Constructivism has received both praises and critics. Communicative approach followers claim that the principles in constructivism support their thoughts while the followers of a more traditional approach, namely, Grammar Translation Method, claim that the constructivism is just another experiment in language teaching, just like other methods. This article is based on a classroom action research investigation of how scaffolding instruction, the operational ‘terms’ of constructivism, based on its ‘ZPD’ (Zone of Proximal Development), play roles in language teaching, specifically in Business English Writing. The investigation has perceived several important aspects in scaffolding instruction for teaching Business English Correspondence, such as the importance of modeling or giving examples, as well as corrective and immediate feedback, together with positive reinforcement, to improve the learners’ performance. It showed that modeling or giving examples, peer reviewing, together with immediate feedback, brought significant influence on the learners’ perspective, about their learning performance. Abstract

In education, the functions of reading, among others, are to access knowledge, to synthesize information, to evaluate arguments, and to learn new subjects. It is believed that successful readers employ various and proper reading strategies to comprehend a text. To examine the use of the metacognitive strategies in academic reading comprehension, this study investigates the reading performance and the major reading strategies of twenty-five vocational Indonesian lecturers from various institutions as the research respondents. Two research instruments were used: Reading Comprehension Test to obtain the data of their reading performance, and Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) to identify their preferred reading strategies. The research finding indicates that the respondents had varied levels of English reading performance.  The result also shows that out of the three sub-categories of metacognitive reading strategies, problem-solving strategy was the most frequently used strategy, followed by global strategy and support strategy respectively. Further statistical calculation, however, proves that there was no significant difference in the overall and the three sub-categories of metacognitive reading strategy use between the high and low achievers. There is no significant relationship between the metacognitive reading strategies and reading performance of the participants.

Abstract

To response the spread of Covid-19, almost all offline education institutes are shut down and e-learning is conducted almost abruptly, including in a Business English writing class for university students. The discussion forum in the LMS ‘Moodle’ is used a lot to help the discussion of this class alive. To widen the knowledge of the use of discussion forum, especially during an emergency time like this Covid-19 pandemic, this qualitative descriptive qualitative research aims to explore how discussion forum is used in the LMS ‘Moodle’ for university students in e-learning during a pandemic, especially concerning optimization of the questions, the arrangement of the topics of discussion, and the assignments. By analyzing the patterns of how the discussion forum is used and interviewing the students, this research found that what determines the student's response to the discussion in the forum is the question words and the key words in the discussion sentences in the forum. These two things will determine students’ answers in terms of the key words used by students, the length and shortness of student answers, and the type and depth of student answers, which in turn show how students interact in the discussion forum.
