Abstract

Abstract

Demonstration of how to brush teeth is a teaching method by presenting lessons through direct demonstration of the object or showing a process or procedure. Roll Technique is the method most often recommended because it is simple but efficient and can be used throughout the mouth. Debris Index (DI) is a score (value) of soft deposits that occur due to food residue attached to the tooth surface. This study aims to determine the status of the debris index before and after a demonstration of brushing teeth using the roll technique. The type of research is experimental research with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The total population was 52 students and the total sample was 48 students, the time of the research was in May 2019 at Kartika XXI-5 Manado Elementary School. This research was to see the difference in debris index status before and after the demonstration method of brushing teeth using the roll technique using a paired sample t test. The results of this study showed that the average debris index before the demonstration of brushing teeth using the roll technique for 48 respondents was 2.31, while the average debris index after the demonstration of brushing teeth using the roll technique for 48 respondents was 1.48. The calculated t value is 10.335 with a sig of 0.000. because sig <0.05, it can be concluded that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means there is a difference in the status of the debris index before and after a demonstration of brushing teeth using the roll technique for students in class IV & V at Kartika XXI-5 Elementary School, Manado.

Abstract

Debris is a soft mineral that sticks to teeth, usually stuck in between teeth and is a contributing factor to the formation of dental caries and tartar. Debris can only be cleaned by brushing your teeth and consuming fibrous foods. Fiber foods have good teeth-cleaning power, found in fruits such as apples and melons. Chewing fruit will increase saliva and help rinse teeth from stuck food debris. Apples and melons are fruits that contain high fiber. This type of research was descriptive research using the Debris Index examination method directly in the oral cavity. The sample in this study was 30 students in Class 2 of SMP N 7 Kisaran. The research results showed that before chewing an apple, none of the respondents had good Debris Index criteria, 80% had moderate criteria and 20% had poor criteria. Before chewing melon, none of the respondents had good Debris Index criteria, 60% had moderate criteria and 40% had poor criteria. After chewing an apple there was a 100% Debris Index in good criteria. After chewing melon, respondents who had a Debris Index with good criteria were 66.67%, with moderate criteria 33.33% and none had bad criteria. It can be concluded that chewing apples and melons can reduce the Debris Index number. The decrease in Debris Index after chewing apples was 1.22 on average and after chewing melons, it was 1.21 on average. It is hoped that students regularly consume fruit that contains lots of fiber such as apples and melons.

Abstract

Green Betel Leaf (Piper Betle L) is a traditional medicinal plant that is closely related to dental and oral health. Betel leaves are useful for strengthening teeth, eliminating bad breath and stopping gum bleeding. Saliva also affects the pH of the mouth. A decrease in salivary pH can cause rapid demineralization of tooth elements, while an increase in salivary pH can lead to bacterial colonization that can lead to calculus formation. This research aims to determine the effect of gargling boiled green betel leaf water on saliva pH in young adults at KGPM Eben Heazer Bahu. The research location is at the KGPM Eben Heazer shoulder pastor, and the research time is in June 2024. This type of research is a quasi-experimental with a one group pretest posttest design, the sample size is 43 people, with the sample collection method using a random sampling method with inclusion criteria. Data collection was obtained from the results of measuring saliva pH using universal pH test paper, a format for examining saliva pH before and after gargling boiled green betel leaf water. Data analysis used non-parametric statistical tests with the Wilcoxon test method. The research results obtained showed that the average saliva pH value before gargling was 7.14, the saliva pH value after gargling was 7.35, with a difference in the average saliva pH value of 0.21. analysis using the Wilcoxon test shows that there is a significant effect seen from the p value = 0.002 (0.002 < 0.05). This means that there is an effect of gargling boiled green betel leaf water on the pH of saliva.
