Abstract

Selenium is a trace element that has antioxidant properties and is a component of selenoproteins. In certain circumstances, such as injury, selenium supplementation is required to regulate the inflammatory response. Contusion injury increases the inflammatory response to a muscle or tissue that begins with vasodilation, increases blood flow, increases vascular permeability, and leads to edema formation at the site of injury. Objectives: To determine the effect of selenium supplementation on changes in blood markers in rats treated with contusion injury. Methods: Experimental design, using experimental male rats (Rattus norwegius), eight weeks old, weighing 200-220 grams, divided into three groups, namely: The Control group, the contusion group, the contusion + Selenium group. Selenium supplementation was given orally on days 1-3 after injury at a dose of 0.0153 mg into 2% PGA. Examination of markers such as White Blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils was carried out on day three after treatment. Results: This study found that the administration of post-muscular selenium supplementation based on examination of blood markers such as WBC, Lymphocytes, Monocytes was higher in the contusion group and lower in the selenium group. Neutrophils were higher in the contusion and selenium groups. This was not significantly different from the control group. The result of blood marker examination tended to change, but it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Selenium supplementation in post-contusive injury mice did not provide significant changes in blood markers such as WBC, lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils. Keywords:  antioxidant, blood marker, contusion, selenium

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of post-stroke fatigue on motor function as seen from dynamic balance in the elderly. The results of this examination are considered because they are an important component of stroke recovery. The research was conducted at the Sri Mulyani Physiotherapy Clinic, West Jakarta for approximately 1 month, from January to March 2023. The measurement instruments in this study were the FAS to see post-stroke fatigue in the elderly and the Time Up and Go Test (TUG) to see dynamic balance function in the elderly. The results of the study were based on examining post-stroke fatigue using FAS before and after the intervention. There was a significant effect (p value = 0.0001****) in the examination group I, and dynamic balance examination using the TUG before and after the intervention had a significant effect (p value = 0.0004***) in the examination group II. On examination to see the effect of FAS and TUG it was found that there was a significant effect (p value = 0.0001**** or p <0.05) between post-stroke fatigue on dynamic balance in the elderly. The conclusion from the research results is that there is a significant influence between the results of examining post-stroke fatigue in the elderly using the Fatigue Assessment Scale on dynamic balance in the elderly using the Time Up and Go Test.

Abstract

Abstract: Parkinson's is a progressive degenerative disease that causes motor dysfunction. Individuals with Parkinson's also experience non-motor symptoms such as pain. Pain is one of the most frequently reported debilitating symptoms among individuals with Parkinson's. TENS as a non-invasive and non-pharmacological treatment has been used to treat a variety of neuropathic pain. The analgesic effect of TENS has been shown to be achieved through neurobiological mechanisms that affect the peripheral nervous system and central nervous system. This study aims to determine the intensity of pain in individuals with Parkinson's against pain reduction by administering TENS to the superficial radial nerve. The method in this study was Quasi Experimental with a research design in the form of a pretest – posttest group design on the elderly Parkinson's at RSU Aulia, South Jakarta. In this study, the number of samples was 12 people who were divided into 2 groups, namely the control group and the treatment group, each group consisted of 6 people. The measuring instrument used was the VAS which was measured before and after TENS was given to each group. The results of the hypothesis test with the Unpaired T-Test showed a significant reduction in pain in the treatment group (by administering TENS) with p value = 0.00** (p <0.05). The conclusion in this study is that treatment with TENS administration of pain has an analgesic effect on the elderly Parkinson's.

Abstract

Stroke can cause changes in the heart, which are associated with excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system as a response to damage occurring in the insular cortex. Cardiac biomarkers such as creatine kinase myocardial band (CK-MB) show increased levels in some patients with acute cerebrovascular accidents without direct cardiac injury. CK-MB activity has been found to increase in the early phase of patients with ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and head trauma. Objective: To determined the effect of aerobic exercise on serum creatine kinase myocardial band (CK-MB) activity in elderly post-stroke patients. Methods: This was a pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study involved 16 elderly post-stroke respondents who received aerobic exercise using a static cycle at light to moderate intensity for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week, over the course of 4 weeks. CK-MB activity was evaluated using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Results: There was a significant effect of aerobic exercise on serum CK-MB activity in elderly post-stroke patients, with a p-value of 0.000 or p < 0.05. The mean serum CK-MB level increased to 29.43µL, while the mean serum CK-MB level decreased to 23.12 µL after receiving aerobic exercise with a static cycle for 4 weeks. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise using a static cycle at light to moderate intensity for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week, over the course of 4 weeks, had a significant effect on serum creatine kinase myocardial band (CK-MB) activity in elderly post-stroke. Abstract
