Abstract

Background. To determine the effect of soaking red betel leaves against the hardness of nanofillercomposite resins. Materials and Methods. The research applied True Experimental Laboratory methodwith one group pretest posttest. The 18 samples of nanofiller composite resin were obtained throughpurposive sampling. The samples were light cured then soaked in red betel leaf solution for 28 minutes. Then, the hardness measurements were performed using VickerHardness Tester. Results. The results ofpaired sample t-test indicated the effect of soaking red betel leaf (p 0.002 <0.05) and sterile aquadest (p0.026 <0.05) on the surface hardness of nanofiller composite resin. Conclusion. The effect of soakingred betel leaves on the surface hardness of nanofiller composite resin was obtained.

Abstract

Failed root canal treatment can cause problems such as recurring pain and leave persistent bacteria in the root canal. One of the bacteria that often causes root canal treatment failure is Enterococcus faecalis. The use of a root canal irrigation agent such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) can help inhibit the growth of bacteria in the root canal. The use of materials derived from nature can be used as an alternative material for root canal irrigation because they inhibit growth and kill bacteria and have fewer side effects than chemicals. Several studies have tried to prove the use of ingredients of natural origin in the form of a mixture and the results obtained are higher when compared to single use. Natural ingredients that are often used as herbal medicine include cloves and cinnamon. Objective. To determine the effectiveness of a mixture of clove flower extract (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamon burmanni) on the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. Methods. Using experimental laboratory methods, with a research design in the form of Post Test Only Control Design, sampling by random sampling using 5 treatments and 5 repetitions. Statistical test using One Way Anova. Results. This study showed the diameter of the inhibition zone of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria in a mixture of clove flower (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamon burmanni) extract at 5% concentration of 10.84 ± 0.73, 10% concentration of 15.00 ± 0.80 mm. The concentration of 15% was 16.32 ± 1.04 mm and based on statistical tests obtained a significant value of P <0.01. Conclusion. The alternative hypothesis of this study is accepted and this study shows that there is an effectiveness of a mixture of clove flower extract (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamon burmanni) concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% in inhibiting the growth of Enterococcus faecalis.

Abstract

The proportion of the elderly continues to grow throughout the world especially in developing countries. From the RISKESDAS data by Ministry of Health, it was found that the percentage of good and correct brushing behavior in the elderly age group was only 2.9%. So from many reports, it was found that many elderly people lost their teeth. In general, the function of teeth plays a role in the process of mastication, esthetics, and phonetics. The impact caused by tooth loss can affect the oral cavity and general or systemic health, so it is necessary to replace missing teeth. Many people who use dentures do not understand how to maintain their dentures. Dentures that are not properly cleaned can cause various negative impacts such as increased plaque accumulation and result in denture stomatitis and further tooth decay that affects the overall health of the oral cavity. Epidemiological data found that the incidence of denture stomatitis is 30-50% in removable denture users. In the initial survey, the majority of the Lanna sub-district community who joined the religious group" assembly were elderly and many did not realize the importance of using dentures and how to maintain good dentures. Based on this, it is necessary to conduct counseling. This service is carried out in the Lanna village community. The method we use is with lectures / animated video counseling, discussions, and questions and answers. The results of service, increased knowledge about the importance of dentures and correct denture maintenance to prevent denture stomatitis

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion is a dentofacial growth deviation that interferes with mastication, deglutination, speech and facial harmony. In Indonesia, the prevalence of malocclusion is constantly high (around 80%) which reached 90% among school-age adolescents in 1983 and 89% in 2006. Malocclusion condition, especially crowding, can generate plaque accumulation and calculus formation because of toothbrush inability to outreach interdental areas in crowded teeth. Aims: To determine the correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status among class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar in 2017. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study using cross-sectional design. Target population is class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar. The data was collected using ICON and OHI-S assessment method. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman test. Results: The results showed p value = 0.01 which means that there was a significant correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status with r = 0.314. Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between malocclusion severity level and oral hygiene status among class VII and VIII students at SMP LPP YW Universitas Muslim Indonesia Makassar in 2017.
