Abstract

Background of the problem: Library, as a part of universities that create institutional scientific works bears responsibility for serving as both the central database for the scientific publications the library subscribes to and a platform for the management of institutional scientific works. Open access facilitates simpler access to and use of information while hastening the process of information distribution. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine how university libraries support open access information sources. Method: In this study, interviews were employed to collect data using a qualitative research methodology. Findings: The data indicated that libraries and librarians promoted the availability of OA information sources through the library page, which can be viewed at https://library.unesa.ac.id. Conclusion: To ensure that lecturers and students have access to a variety of scientific information sources, it is crucial for university libraries to develop and promote open access information sources.

Abstract

Background: The national level of basic literacy skills in Indonesia, as assessed by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), remains alarmingly low. This is an anomaly considering the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS) at the elementary school level, which has introduced various strategies for enhancing basic literacy skills. Objective: Therefore, this study aims to analyze strategies for improving basic literacy skills among elementary school students to support an increase in PISA scores. Methods: The research method employed in this study is the Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which involved analyzing journal articles published between 2019 and 2024 related to strategies for enhancing basic literacy skills in elementary school students in Surabaya. The researchers reviewed five journal articles obtained from Google Scholar. Results: The findings reveal several strategies that have been implemented to improve basic literacy skills among elementary school students, including literacy habituation through GLS and teaching methods such as the formation of literacy clubs, reading aloud, and the use of visual media. Necessary support includes the provision of facilities and infrastructure, awarding incentives, and collaborative support from all stakeholders. Meanwhile, obstacles include the absence of a dedicated literacy team, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, and changes in school leadership policies regarding literacy activities. Conclusion: The strategy to improve basic literacy involves holistic efforts through habitual literacy activities, student-centered teaching methods, and collaborative support from all stakeholders (schools, parents, communities, governments, and private sectors), aiming to enhance students' critical thinking, global mindset, and PISA performance while addressing challenges like inadequate resources and policy changes.

Abstract

This study explores the application of constructivist principles in the development of digital media literacy within higher education. Constructivism and digital media literacy share foundational elements, including active participation, critical thinking, contextual learning environments, and social collaboration. This research employs a qualitative approach through a literature review. Publications from 2014 to 2024 were selected based on their relevance to constructivist learning theory and digital media literacy, resulting in four core sources analyzed. The findings demonstrated that constructivist principles significantly contribute to the enhancement of digital media literacy skills, particularly in the areas of content creation, information management, digital publishing, and critical engagement. These competencies were essential for fostering independent, reflective, and responsible learners. The study concludes that constructivist-based approaches are vital for effectively integrating digital media literacy into higher education. To support this integration, it is recommended that universities embed digital media literacy into curricular frameworks and provide additional resources such as training programs through university libraries. These libraries, as central information hubs, can play a pivotal role in supporting students’ digital literacy development and promoting lifelong learning.
