Abstract

The spread of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has increased over time. The government urges people to take extra measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and maintaining dental and oral health is one of those measures that could help to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. People are taught personal dental and oral health practices as well as the necessary health protocols if they decide to visit a dental health facility. The purpose of this activity is to increase participant’s knowledge of the transmission of COVID-19 and how to maintain their dental and oral health. The method used involved measuring the level of knowledge before and after counseling. Furthermore, online counseling and training were provided through Zoom. The pre and post-test results from 88 participants showed that there was a significant increase in knowledge after counseling.

Abstract

Simpulan: Tidak terdapat perbedaan antara nilai PBI dengan jenis kelamin pada pasien periodontitis.KATA KUNCI: Periodontitis, papillary bleeding index, inflamasi gingiva, jenis kelaminThe relationship between PBI values in periodontitis patients based on gender: observational studyABSTRACTIntroduction: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting teeth tissues. According to Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) in 2018, the prevalence of periodontitis in Indonesia reached 74.1%. Clinical signs of periodontitis include gingival inflammation, margin swelling, loss of attachment, periodontal pocket formation, and gingival bleeding on probing. The Papillary Bleeding Index (PBI) is a periodontal index used to measure the severity of gingival inflammation. The PBI value can be influenced by several factors, one of which is gender. Hormonal fluctuations in the body, especially in women, can be seen in the mouth. The aim of the study was to analyse the difference between PBI values in periodontitis patients based on gender. Methods: Analytical observational research with a cross-sectional research design. The sample is periodontal status examination sheets of patients treated at RSGM-P FKG Usakti for the period 2019 - 2022. Data analysis uses the Mann-Whitney statistical test. Results: The majority of periodontitis sufferers at RSGM-P FKG Usakti in 2019 -2022 had a PBI score in the range of 1 - 1.99 in both female and male genders. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that there was no significant difference (p = 0.12) between the female and male groups regarding the PBI value. Conclusion: There is no difference between PBI values and gender in periodontitis patients.KEY WORDS: Periodontitis, papillary bleeding index, gingival inflammation, gender

Abstract

Abstract

Periodontal disease is one of the diseases with a high prevalence in Indonesia. The cause of periodontal disease is inadequate oral hygiene and is also exacerbated by crowded teeth. Preventive measures include using an appropriate toothbrush, using interdental cleaners to clean between teeth, and getting orthodontic treatment if teeth are crowded. Parents have a responsibility towards the health of their children. Parents can influence their children's oral health by their dental health knowledge, habits, and behaviors. Teachers also play a role in improving the dental and oral health of elementary school students. The education and training that were carried out aimed to increase the knowledge of parents and teachers regarding periodontal disease. These activities were held at SDN Tomang 01 with teachers and parents on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10.00-12.00. There were 27 participants in attendance. The education covered topics such as the healthy periodontal tissue, different types of periodontal disease, the causes behind it, as well as its treatment and preventative methods. The training encompassed instructions on proper tooth brushing techniques, as well as guidance on the utilization of dental floss and interdental brushes. Questions and answers were conducted after education. Knowledge improvement is evaluated by providing pre-tests and post-tests before and after education and training. The pre-test and post-test assessments revealed a significant improvement in the accuracy of answers, with the right response value increasing from 40 (16.330) to 60 (14.720). By implementing these activities, it is anticipated that periodontal disease can be averted.
