Abstract

Javanese turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) contains antibacterial compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, triterpenoids, curcuminoids, and quinones, that has potential alternative mouthwash for managing periodontitis, without the side effects of tooth staining and mucosal irritation. This study aims to examine the antibacterial effects of brewed Javanese turmeric against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. This is an in vitro experimental study using a pre-test only group design. Antibacterial testing was conducted using the dilution method with brewed Javanese turmeric at concentrations of 5 grams, 2.5 grams, 1.25 grams, 0.625 grams, and 0.3125 grams. A 0.2% chlorhexidine solution was used as a positive control, and distilled water as a negative control. Data were analyzed using the Post Hoc Tukey HSD test and results showed that the 5 gram concentration exhibited the lowest average colony count among all groups and revealed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the 5 gram group and both control groups. The 5 gram brewed had the highest antibacterial effect among the test groups, although it did not surpass the effectiveness of 0.2% chlorhexidine. Further studies recommended using different bacterial strains, MIC and MBC tests, specialized equipment for Total Plate Count analysis and in vivo studies are also necessary.

Abstract

Background: Gingival enlargement is characterized by an abnormal increase of gingival tissue, often leading to cosmetic issues and difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene due to plaque accumulation. Gingivectomy, a surgical procedure to remove excessive gingival tissue, is frequently employed to restore healthy, functional, and aesthetically pleasing gingiva. This case report describes the gingivectomy technique using a scalpel as a treatment for gingival enlargement. Case report: A 52-years-old woman reported swelling in the upper left posterior gingiva, which bled easily during toothbrushing. She had a history of hypertension. Examination revealed gingival overgrowth that covers up half of the crown of teeth 26 and 27. Treatment began with initial non-surgical care, followed by evaluation and surgical intervention using a scalpel to remove the excess tissue. The surgical site was cleaned with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and povidone-iodine, and the root surfaces were smoothed. The patient received post-surgical care instructions and periodontal maintenance education. A follow-up after three weeks revealed no complaints from the patient, no signs of inflammation and no recurrence of gingival enlargement. Conclusion: Gingivectomy proved to be an effective approach for treating gingival enlargement in patient with hypertension, successfully restoring gingival health and function.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Previous research studies have found the persistence of various COVID-19 symptoms even after the patient tested negative on a PCR test; this incident is now known as long COVID. These long COVID symptoms are reported to appear in the oral cavity including long COVID effects on periodontal disease, as both long COVID and periodontal disease release similar proinflammatory cytokines such as Acute phase proteins, CRP, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and IFN-g. Purpose: This study aims to show periodontal-disease severity-frequency distribution in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID and in non-COVID-19 patients. Methods: Patients' secondary data in the Periodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry at Trisakti University Dental Hospital (n=40) consisted of 20 samples from COVID-19 survivors who experienced long COVID and 20 samples from the non-COVID-19 group selected according to the inclusion criteria. Afterward, the data was recapitulated and processed into a research report. Results: The distribution percentage of generalized gingivitis was highest in non-COVID-19 patients, while generalized periodontitis was highest in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID. Based on periodontitis staging and grading methods, it is not proven that long COVID increases the severity of the periodontitis. Conclusion: This research shows that the distribution of gingivitis in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID has not increased. Meanwhile, the distribution of general periodontitis increased in survivors with long COVID. However, there was no increased severity of periodontitis based on the staging and grading method of periodontitis in the COVID-19 survivors with long COVID.
