Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Methadone Therapy Program (MTP) patients receive treatment with antidepressants which work as salivary flow inhibitors that promote xerostomia. Decreased salivary secretion affects several essential aspects of life quality, such as speaking, chewing, and food swallowing. It also increases the risk of rampant caries. This study aimed to analyze correlation of xerostomia in MTP with Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHI-P 14). Methods: Type of research was a cross-sectional design, this study's main independent variable was xerostomia, the dependent variable was OHRQoL, and the confounders were age, gender, education, occupation, caries status, oral hygiene status, history of HIV infection, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption. Data analysis used logistic regression to see the risk factors that influence OHRQoL. Results: Xerostomia is a subjective dry mouth complaint asked through a questionnaire. Of the 26 respondents, 13 (50%) reported dry mouth. Salivary Flow Rate (SFR) measurement showed the result of 13 people was <0.3 (hyposalivation). OHrQOL was measured using OHI-P 14 questionnaire, 12 respondents had good OHRQoL (score > 6.5) and 13 respondents had bad (score ≤6.5). Risk factors associated with OHRQoL were age (p=0.08) and duration of methadone consumption (p=0.06). Conclusion: There is no correlation between xerostomia in MTP with Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHI-P 14). Future research should involve several hospitals that carry out MTP so that the research results are more valid.KEYWORDSmethadone, oral health related quality of life, OHrQOL, OHIP-14,  xerostomia

Abstract

Periodontal disease is one of the diseases with a high prevalence in Indonesia. The cause of periodontal disease is inadequate oral hygiene and is also exacerbated by crowded teeth. Preventive measures include using an appropriate toothbrush, using interdental cleaners to clean between teeth, and getting orthodontic treatment if teeth are crowded. Parents have a responsibility towards the health of their children. Parents can influence their children's oral health by their dental health knowledge, habits, and behaviors. Teachers also play a role in improving the dental and oral health of elementary school students. The education and training that were carried out aimed to increase the knowledge of parents and teachers regarding periodontal disease. These activities were held at SDN Tomang 01 with teachers and parents on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10.00-12.00. There were 27 participants in attendance. The education covered topics such as the healthy periodontal tissue, different types of periodontal disease, the causes behind it, as well as its treatment and preventative methods. The training encompassed instructions on proper tooth brushing techniques, as well as guidance on the utilization of dental floss and interdental brushes. Questions and answers were conducted after education. Knowledge improvement is evaluated by providing pre-tests and post-tests before and after education and training. The pre-test and post-test assessments revealed a significant improvement in the accuracy of answers, with the right response value increasing from 40 (16.330) to 60 (14.720). By implementing these activities, it is anticipated that periodontal disease can be averted.

Abstract

Background: The majority of children in Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta, continue to experience numerous dental and oral health issues, with dental caries being especially prevalent. Caries is a multifactorial disease that, in children, can be caused by personal habits or external influences. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between caries risk factors and the occurrence of caries in primary school children in West Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods: The study was conducted in three public primary schools in West Jakarta in November 2023. Oral examinations and questionnaires were completed by all students from fourth to sixth grade, with a total sample size of 421 students. In this study, caries was the dependent variable, and the independent variables included sociodemographic factors, oral health behaviors, smoking habits, and dietary habits. Data analysis involved bivariate analysis and the application of a multivariate prediction model using logistic regression. Results: The variables significantly associated with dental caries were never visiting the dentist (p < 0.05), brushing teeth never or only several times a week (p < 0.05), never consuming fruits (p < 0.05), and consuming biscuits several times a day (p < 0.05). However, other variables—such as parental education, use of oral cleaning tools and fluoride toothpaste, smoking habits, and consumption of certain sweet foods and beverages—did not show a significant association. Conclusion: The most substantial factors contributing to dental caries were infrequent toothbrushing and frequent consumption of biscuits. Interestingly, children who never visited the dentist had lower incidences of caries.

Abstract

Academic stressors in a medical educational environment are related to two factors. This study was carried out in order to analyze the correlation between the dental environment and perceived stress among dental students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The respondents were 422 undergraduate dental students and the validated Modified Dental Environmental Stress (DES) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaires were used. Furthermore, the Spearman correlation analysis was used to measure the correlation between DES and PSS score. The result showed that five dental stressors were noted to have the strongest correlations with PSS (p-value >0.40). They include expectation towards dental school (p-value = 0.431), lack of confidence to be a successful dentist (p-value = 0.424), lack of confidence to become a successful dental student (p-value = 0.408), dental school regulations (p-value = 0.401) and criticism of school work (p-value = 0.400). In addition, all six DES categories showed a positive correlation with the PSS. Therefore, the dental students collectively displayed moderate perceived stress scores. The overall discoveries from this study showed a positive correlation between the DES and PSS among dental students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
