Abstract

Background: Since it was first declared global pandemic by WHO in March 2020, Covid-19 has been triggered many unprecedented changes in education. This drastic change is likely to have an impact on students’ perception and their scholastic motivation. Many previous studies have discussed students’ perception towards online learning and students’ learning motivation during this pandemic separately, but we found none discussed on their relationship.Aims: This study ventured to distinguish a possible correlation between perception of online learning and learning motivation among the students in Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, during the pandemic lockdown. Methods: This was a correlative study with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were 286 students, selected from three academic years. Primary data was collected by using questionnaire. Data was analysed with Spearman’s rank test and binary logistics to find true association by using IBM SPSS for Windows 26.0.Results: Students’ perception of online lecture were mostly towards favourable attitude, while students’ learning motivation was leaning towards lower motivation. We found an interesting finding regarding the correlation of both variables. Descriptively, students found that they were easily lose focus during online session. Most of the students also perceived that online learning is less effective compared to face-to face learning. Conclusion: Online learning faces hinderances, both technically and psychologically. Faculty and educators need to address these challenges to be able to promote better strategy in dealing with the difficulties

Abstract

Background : Chikungunya outbreak was reported in Indonesia on 1973 at Samarinda and DKI Jakarta. On 2000-2007, chikungunya outbreak occurred in all provinces with 18.169 cases without mortality in Indonesia. Now, almost all provinces in Indonesia are potential for chikungunya outbreak. Chikungunya is a disease caused by chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes Ae. aegypti. Some studies have been conducted to find out the chikungunya viral in some endemics area, however still few studies conducted in Sumatera Utara. The aim of this study was to find out chikungunya viral in mosquito of Ae. aegypti in four villages in District of Sergai. Minimum Infection Rate (MIR) is a measure of proportion of the mosquitoe population which is carrying a particular virus. When infection rate increases the risk of virus transmission to humans also increases.Method : This was a descriptive study for 50 samples of Ae. aegypti which were caught randomized from four villages of two endemis chikungunya subdistricts in district of Sergai then examined by using Reverse-Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) technique to find out chikungunya virus. Chikungunya virus was examined by using TitanTM One Tube Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerace Chain Reaction RT-PCR) kit and CHIKnsP1-S sense primer (5’-TAG-GAC-AGG-AAA-TTGATC-CC-3’), CHIKnsP1-S anti-sense primer (5’-CTT-TAA-TCG-CCT-GGT-GGT-AT-3’). RT was running on temperature of 37C for an hour to gain cDNA, then amplifying by 35 recycling on temperature of 94oC for 3’, 94oC for 1’, 54oC for 90”, 54oC for 2’ and extension on temperature of 72oC for 2’.Result : 13 samples were positive for chikungunya virus from 50 samples which were examined. MIR was 130%.Conclusion : 13 samples which were found positive for chikungunya virus. MIR 130%, this was appropriate with high infection of chikungunya on patients where the mosquitoes were caught.Key words : Ae. aegypti, chikungunya virus, RT-PCR

The research aims to determine the self-perception of Co-Assistant students regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: The study was designed cross-sectional, which was conducted via sharing online links. Respondents must Co-Assistant students from a medical faculty in Indonesia and participated in the questionnaire filling between June 2020 and October 2020. This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach and conducted using primary data (online questionnaire Results: One hundred forty-nine students (149) of Co-Assistant students from several medical faculties all over Indonesia met the inclusive criteria. The samples were dominated by female respondents at 103 students (69.1%), while the male respondent accounted for only 46 students (30.9%). The first year of the Co-Assistant program with 94 respondents (63.1%) followed by the second year of the Co-Assistant program with 55 respondents (36.9%). The highest mean score in the fear zone came from the "first year of Co-Assistant program" group and the highest mean score in the learning and growth zone came from the "second year of Co-Assistant program" group. Conclusion: The highest mean score in the fear zone came from the "first year of Co-Assistant program" group and the highest mean score in the learning and growth zone came from the "second year of Co-Assistant program" group.
