Abstract

ABSTRACTOptimum fertilization is not only proposed for obtaining desireable quality and quantity of the plant, but also to avoid excess fertilizer causing toxicity and environmental damage. The objective of this research  was to study and to determine an optimum rate of organic and NPK compound fertilizers for immature oil palm. The experiment was carried out at IPB-Cargill  Oil palm Teaching Farm, Jonggol, from March 2013 to March 2014. The treatments was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The first factor was organic fertilizer,  i.e. 0, 15, 30 and 45 kg organic fertilizer plant-1, and the second was NPK compound fertilizer, i.e. 0, 0.65, 1.3, 1.95 and  2.6 kg NPK compound fertilizer plant-1. The result  showed  that vegetative growth increases  with fertilizer application. The height and stem girth of  plant were significantly affected by interaction between organic and NPK compound fertilizers, however there was no significant effect on frond production, frond length and leaf area. N, P leaf content of  plant were affected by interaction between organic and NPK compound fertilizers, however there was no effect on K leaf content, chlorophyll and number of stomata. Based on the height and stem girth regression equation, the optimum recommendation rate of organic and NPK compound fertilizers for immature first year oil palm are 40.7 kg organic fertilizer plant-1 and 1.9 kg NPK compound plant-1 Keywords: inorganic fertilizers, nutrient level, stem girth, vegetative growth

Abstract

ABSTRACTCashew nut shells have not been fully utilized untill recently, and most of them are still in a form of wastes.  Cashew nut shell wastes are organic matter containing macro elements that are useful for plants, such as N (0.84%), P (0.21%), K (0.70%), Ca (0.13%) and Mg (0.24%) that are useful for plants. Cashew nut shell wastes would be very potential if they were composted into organic fertilizers. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of cashew nut shell compost formula application on growth and nutrient uptake of cashew seedlings. The research was conducted at IPB Teaching Farm Dramaga Bogor from November 2012 to May 2013. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The results showed, that cashew nut shell compost formula application at 50 g polybag-1 and 100 g  polybag-1 were significantly increased plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, roots length, fresh weight, dry weight of seedling, and N, P, K uptake at 3 months after planting (MAP) compared to no compost (top soil). The treatment of cashew nut shell compost formula at 50 g polybag-1 showed not significantly compared with goat manure at 100 g polybag-1 on the  plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, roots length and N, P, K uptake at 3 MAP. Both  of the  treatment can improve the balance of nutrients in the soil thus enhancing the growth and vigor of cashew seedling. The treatment of cashew nut shell compost formula (50 g polybag-1) could replace the treatment of goat manure (100 g polibag-1) tended to increase cashew seedling growth. Keywords: A. occidentale L., bioactivator, cashew seedling, KBM compost

Abstract

This research was aimed to study the effect of stem and primary branch prunning on photosynthetic rate and production of physic nut. The experiment was conducted in IPB experimental station in Cikabayan, Darmaga, Bogor, from February 2007 until May 2008. A randomized block design with one factor was used in the experiment. The treatments were combination between stem pruning with various height from the soil surface and pruning of primary branches with various number of branch remained. Stem pruning on 40 cm above the soil surface with no branch pruning resulted in the highest photosynthetic rate (8.10 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1), while stem pruning on 20 cm above the soil surface with 2 primary branches remained resulted in the lowest photosynthetic rate (4.71 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1). Stem pruning on 40 cm above the soil surface without branch pruning produced the highest yield components, i.e., capsul number (207.3 capsul plant-1), seed number (506 seeds plant-1) and seed dry weight (323.81 g plant-1). Keywords: photosynthetic rate, production, stem prunning
