Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mathematical connection ability of elementary school students in the material as whole counting numbers, and categories and based on indicators of mathematical connection ability. The subjects were students from Class IV as many as 114 elementary school students. This research is qualitative descriptive research using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments used were a mathematical connection ability test and an interview. The indicators of the ability of mathematical connections measured include the relationship of mathematics with mathematics, the relationship of mathematics with other sciences, and the relationship of mathematics with everyday life. The results showed: (1) an overall mathematical connection ability of 24% including the category of less; (2) based on the category of mathematical connection ability showed that 49% of students are very less, 37% less Category, 7% Category enough, 7% Good category and 0% very good category; (3) the ability of mathematical connections based on indicators a) the relationship of mathematics with mathematics by 18% (very less Category), b) the relationship of mathematics with other sciences by 35% (less category), and c) the relationship of mathematics with everyday life by 17% (very less category). This shows that the ability of mathematical connections is still not owned by the fourth-grade students of elementary school and requires attention and further development by teachers and the school.

Abstract

Previous research has highlighted the challenges of improving students' mathematical skills, particularly in connecting mathematical concepts to everyday life and developing strong mathematical habits of mind. This research aims to integrate problem-based learning (PBL) into a mathematics module to enhance mathematical connection abilities and mathematical habits of mind. The ADDIE method was employed to achieve this goal, encompassing five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The findings indicate that media, material, and language experts deemed the module highly suitable. Furthermore, the product was rated as highly practical based on teacher assessments, student responses, and observations during implementation. Effectiveness tests of the product, conducted through MANOVA, t-tests, and N-gain tests, revealed that the module is highly effective in enhancing students' mathematical connection abilities and moderately effective in improving their mathematical habits of mind. These findings underscore the importance of integrating digital learning technologies to increase the module's engagement and accessibility.

Abstract

Abstract

This research was motivated by the conventional learning methods still commonly used in Grade I classrooms, with limited variation in instructional approaches. As a result, students experience difficulties in recognizing letters, such as distinguishing letter shapes, naming letters, and associating them with sounds. One strategy to improve letter recognition skills is through the implementation of singing as a teaching method. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the singing method on letter recognition skills among first-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Kalisapu. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach, using a non-equivalent control group design. The population of the study consisted of all students at SD Negeri 1 Kalisapu, with the sample being all 36 first-grade students. The results of the Independent Sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.01 (0.01 < 0.05), indicating that the singing method had a significant effect on students' letter recognition abilities. The N-Gain test results showed an average N-Gain score of 0.4967 in the experimental group, which is greater than 0.3, falling into the ‘moderate’ category. This suggests that the application of the singing method was moderately effective in improving students' letter recognition skills. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of the singing method has a significant impact on the letter recognition abilities of Grade I students at SD Negeri 1 Kalisapu.
